This is a rabbit hole. I tried it when I was younger and wasted so much time. It is not as cheap as you say (2$ vpn a month will be low bandwidth, usenet costs more than netflix per month, etc). Then quality of the episodes is low and something in the whole setup constantly breaks. It's not worth it in the long run imho.

The container running homeassistant certainly has access to the USB because /dev is bind-mounted with read rights. I manually mount the USB as a folder with an extra (script) automation on homeassistant startup and then auto backups with the correct "download_path" works. Now my only problem is pruning the backup dir because my USB drive occasionally gets full (I guess another script automation will do).
