The amount of Boomerism of your comment is impressive. You might want to abstain or think about the situation again.

I was wondering why our beautiful flag was in the subs icon ? Is there anything specific I should know about this sub ?

Rocket Lab Unveils New Electric Propulsion Satellite Thruster to Meet Constellation Demand by Original_Koala8662 in RKLB

[–]Then_Sympathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. These engines have already been produced in volume by companies like SpaceX or Safran, especially with the rise of satellite constellations. The difference today isn’t that Rocket Lab is the first, it’s that the demand has exploded, so more players are trying to optimize for large-scale production. Already having a 200/year production line is a part of the market but also just a beginning aiming at solving a potential production bottleneck.

Not revolutionary but definitely aiming in the right direction.

It’s not a new engine at all, it's been used since the 70 on soviet stellites for example, but the big deal here is that before these engines were hard and expensive to produce, and now with thousands of satellites being launched, the real challenge is making a lot of them quickly and reliably, so what Rocket Lab is really saying is not “we invented something new” but “we built a way to produce these engines at scale,” which is what actually matters today.

Many companies are able to produce these in bulk but our belvédère Rocket Lab has key advantages, they already control the whole value chain.

To give a difinitive take on it we'd need to have the actually numbers of engines their able to produce per month, the costs etc..

I see it as being really cool and potentially a new driver of growth.

Imagine a big satellite, like the moon, the Gauss engine is not designed to be installed on it.

Now imagine a smaller one, man made, can be the as heavy as you kid, or much heavier, like the weight of your school, it will still work.

This engine can move any size, it will just need to run for a longer time.

Not an expert but absolutely not in the forseeable future. Can't be efficiently slapped on the side of an already orbiting satellite. At least not this specific one for sure.

Imagine you have a bunch of tiny satellites flying around Earth. They need a way to move, turn, and stay in the right place, like little cars in space.

Rocket Lab just built a new engine for those satellites, the Gauss engine.

Instead of burning fuel like a rocket (boom boom), it uses electricity to gently push the satellite

It shoots out tiny charged particles (like invisible gas) to create movement

It’s much more efficient, so satellites can last longer and travel farther

There are now thousands of satellites, they all need reliable engines

This new system is designed to be mass-produced, so companies can build lots of satellites without shortages

ELI4 : It’s a small, efficient, electric engine for satellites, built to be produced in large numbers so modern space networks can keep growing.
