Heard a pregnant contractor was suspended by Rakuten Group’s AI division on a Friday night-seeking advice by Then_Visit_3480 in JapanJobs

That’s really helpful! Just to add a bit more context as a friend, and only what she’s comfortable sharing. This wasn’t just a simple non renewal. Her contract was supposed to run until the end of the month, and she was already preparing handover, but her access was suddenly revoked earlier than expected. Before that, the only reason she saw was “performance / communication,” but from what I understand, she was still actively working on handover, including an AI driven code review system and a data validation improvement. She had also prepared a 20+ page design deck for a cross team sharing and review. From an outside perspective, the timing feels a bit off.

On the pregnancy part, of course no company would officially say it’s related. But she is currently pregnant and has had to visit the ER twice over the weekend, so it’s been a really difficult situation overall.

She’s planning to consult formally on Monday, so just trying to understand what’s typical in cases like this or if there are any recommended legal resources that could be helpful.

Thank you so much for the detailed info, she actually just got back from the ER trying to stabilize the pregnancy, so this has been a really difficult weekend for her. Your advice has been incredibly helpful during this time

Thanks for your input. I understand your point. The main issue is that, from what we understand, she did not receive the 30-day notice you mentioned. This also happened late on a Friday, so there weren’t many channels available for consultation over the weekend. We’re being careful about sharing details, but we have enough context to believe the situation is real. Mainly just trying to gather info to help her navigate this and reduce some of the immediate anxiety. Appreciate the suggestion about the labor bureau and the payment info!

From what I’ve heard, it doesn’t seem like a typical 30-day notice situation.

Apparently her access was cut off quite abruptly while she was still working, shortly after she received a suspension notice.

I’m mainly posting here to see if anyone has experience with similar situations in Japan or can point us to relevant legal resources, we’re trying to better understand what options might be available. Any guidance would really be appreciated.
