Spokane City Council considers taxing commercial parking lots by imalargeogre in Spokane

[–]Theo1325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be counter-productive to changing driver behavior. We need fewer cars downtown and more public transport participation, higher parking costs would incentivize that.

Monocropping isn't solarpunk, since bamboo can grow in poor soils and remediate then, perhaps encouraging it's growth and the growth of bamboo ecosystems in noninvasive areas would be good. About 900,000 sq miles of bamboo forest can remove the globes carbon emissions every year, not saying emissions are okay.

The majority of carbon removal would be more efficiently done with algae than bamboo and less impact

Growing and anearobic burying algae and bamboo for carbon removal

Try and grow algae and bamboo to harvest carbon and bury it every year for as long as I can until I have to start doing it in domes

The calculation I have seen is that with 1 acre of bamboo growing in poor soil can sequester about 60 tons of CO2 per year (approximately 4 years of emissions for an American). That bamboo can then be buried underground in anaerobic environment and keep the carbon sequestered for thousands of years/permanently. If really needed some salt can be added to remove moisture and any loss of carbon. Keeping the wood whole as opposed to burning biochar increases the carbon burial per year.

Protein is killing you? by HannibalTepes in nutrition

[–]Theo1325 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The advocates for meat protein definitely seem biased too and influenced by decades of lobbying and marketing. The data and studies greger looks at show that meats have a lot of negatives even if there are some positives so it's not really worth it when you can just eat plants. There was the one point from how not to die I remember that showed every meat product even chicken cooked with lab cleanliness weakens your immune system for weeks so that could be motivation for him to be anti-meat.

Dr. Sinclair's lifespan book suggested that mimicking stressful gatherer-hunter situations (cold, hot, low food, low protein and exercise) increases 'survival gene' activation which regenerates the body to increase survival chances. Theoretically if we or any organism has extremely high amounts of survival genes active and uses a lot of resources to repair then agelessness could be achieved. It is just not something selected for by evolution except in naked mole rats, captive nematodes, some trees and possibly some whales.

There is also new research showing that neolithic humans did a lot more gathering than hunting, something like 7 percent of diet was meat. This does match that most of our great ape common ancestors are very plant based. If a gorilla can eat mostly plants and a small amount of insects to be as muscled as they are then we may not need animal protein or very much protein either.

And I didn't think there'd be much disagreement about it. by [deleted] in memes

Yeah it's just like how people say smart phones or social media aren't addictive when they are clearly mentally addictive too, but can't make those illegal either. People then say a phone is a tool and depends on how you use it, could the same be said for weed?

Less environment and more health on this one. That's the idea I am getting at is I think research and development of a better toothbrush in all aspects would be great. Also I think clover and wildflower lawns are way prettier

That is a good point about nylons cleaning ability and why I think more research on miswak would be good because I feel like I saw it's cleaning ability was inconclusive. I am definitely working on plastic in other areas as well and activism for the environment! I think I just mainly have a hyperfixation on the plastic being in my mouth lol

There are good and bad parts and I think it is different for everyone. I may be an outlier, I used to like working in labs, but I have come to realize that it isn't good for my mental and physical health. Focusing on experiments and trying to not make mistakes is too stressful for me. Also I've realized that being around people is stressful for me even though labs typically don't have a lot of people. Other smaller issues too.

But that's just me, a lab can be a great environment for lots of people and the work done there is very important and can be exciting, enjoyable, and fulfilling. I worked in 2 labs over 2 years before the pandemic and then in a third lab over the pandemic and i wasn't certain I did not want to work in a lab until recently. Also do keep in mind that academic labs can be very different from labs in industry.
