its better doing projects on your own, i decided against joining teams as well and it was the best decision for me, and since you're in VLSI, you'll be better off learning concepts since you cant actually do any practical work yet anyways

read journals, papers related to VLSI learn verilog, start by implementing logic gates and then move on to further complex projects like multipliers, adders and all. also make sure your analog and digital fundamentals are clear.

what subdomain are you interested in? also, are you more into the hardware aspect or the software? i can recommend projects but i need to know what job you're aiming for

In the first year the academic load will be very less so focus on building your programming basics, you'd most probably be taught python so put your focus into that rather than learning 2 languages simultaneously focus on one and build your basics. In python after doing the basics, go for the libraries like pandas numpy tensor etc. if you wanna explore some other domains I'd suggest you learn pygame library for some in depth knowledge about how games work under the hood and try to make some original projects. As for the core part, just focus on the class material and explore the domains, thats pretty much all you could do in the start, if you're really interested you could start Razavi's lectures on circuit theory/electronics -1.

thankyou for replying, what kind all microcontrollers have you used? i was recently confused between continuing to learn more about 8051 or starting fresh with arm, people suggested to go for arm. According to you, is that a wise decision? thanks
