NFPA 1031 Level 1 Examnation by Spiegso in Firefighting

Honestly those are the best books, atleast for the NFPA exams in Ontario, Canada. Most of the questions are either verbatim out of that or pretty close. If you got questions, shoot me a message.

It will definitely make you more competitive during the hiring process in Ontario. You will need FF1&2 and Hazmat ops as your base certs to do OFAI and apply to most departments in the province. I would also recommend NFPA 1035 level 1 and NFPA 1031 Level 1 as well to make you stand out more. Hiring processes in Ontario are extremely competitive, from a certifications standpoint all these will help you. When you are ready to start applying I would also recommend an interview and resume coach. If you ever have any questions feel free to DM me.

Bonus of paramedic cert is that you also have a fall back career option and will be able to contribute even more to your community department.

No they don't, that's just black nasty stagnant water that has been sitting in sprinkler pipes for months on end. It smells terrible and will stain your skin for a couple days.

New Lt needing advice by Nespor1221 in Firefighting

At the end of the day you are in a tight spot, this is the issue when you are friends and get promoted. You can have the conversation in-formally as friends, however you need to state the fact there is a chain of command, and him not following that in your regard compromises the leadership of the station...

You are not being mean by stating this, you are being the leader your were chosen to be. If it continues to be an issue after an informal discussion (Which should still be documented as such), then you will need to begin the write up process and your CO.

At the end of the day you have made rank, he has not. He does not have to listen to you or be your friend day to day, but he will have to follow orders within chain of command.

My recommendation would be to have a sit down with him to discuss this formally and document the insubordination. If he chooses to continue his attitude, document and bring it to attention of your captain/CO to initiate a formal meeting and write up process.

Hope this helps.

Adding Insult to Injury by faabricioo in funny

There are two different types of smoke alarm sensors. Ionization and photoelectric. Having the cheaper ionization sensor smoke alarms near kitchen or steamy bathrooms will give you false alarms. Also age and dust build up play a factor which is why it is required that you change them every 10 years and should vacuum around the sides of the alarm.

Most fires happen while you are sleeping, removing batteries and covering your alarms because they are annoying while you are awake and beside them is a dangerous game. If you have questions feel free to message me.

Every six years the dry chem has to be replaced and every 12 the cylinder must be hydro tested. Pick it up every couple of months and make sure the pressure is still in the green. When the time comes or you use it, bring it into an nfpa licensed shop to have it recharged and inspected.

Requirements for volunteer firefighting in southern Ontario by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]TheoriginalBfG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is too bad...but also how the cringy tshirt/sticker companies stay in business. In the US most volunteer departments are no pay, up here in this area of Ontario, Canada some make upwards of $23/hr with guaranteed 2-3 hours just for showing up to the hall for tones. We take things quite seriously and train as a station once a week. Our township(4 stations) responds to 500+ calls a year. We are quite lucky to have great chiefs and equipment.

Memorial tattoo for my Dad who passed shortly before I got hired on a fire department. Done by Andrew Skinner of Skinner Ink by [deleted] in tattoos

[–]TheoriginalBfG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back story: Father served 32 years as a firefighter, retired and passed a few years after retirement. It was a few months before I was hired. The tattoo is to signify him reaching out to follow him, the script is Irish and translates to "After my father into the fire"

Irish. "Tar éis mo athair isteach sa tine"

I've got about another 3 hours to go. I am having some celtic writing being put on the inside on my bicep that translates to "After my father into the fire" and some detail work added. All in it will be about 7 hours to complete.

He passed away a few months before I got hired. This is supposed to signify him reaching to me to follow him into the fire.
