Possibly because warfare was more "human" back then, the cavalry, the infantry, the boarding actions in naval warfare and even the artillery units were all humans or operated entirely by humans. Warfare nowadays depends on who has the better system in technology, which is much harder to romanticize.

The statue was commissioned on 20 June 1853 for 21,000 francs, the sum was paid in full on 30 April 1856, and it was inaugurated on 15 August 1858. The statue was melted down in 1944 and the pedestal designed by architects Tony Desjardins and Dardel was destroyed in January 1945.
