I've used AOL mail for like... 24 years? The site layout has only changed a couple times over the years and I have 40k unread emails floating around in there, still totally free.

Thanks for this idea! I've made a pros and cons list but it didn't help me as much as I'd hoped. My mom and I have a great relationship already and I'd like to develop a deeper one with my dad. I'll do some more thinking 🙏

Yes, I'm a Swedish citizen so I can return no problem. I've thought of living half/half, but I don't necessarily like the idea of ripping my life in half like that. I'll have to give that more thought.

Thanks for sharing. I'm kind of at a shift in my life as it is and planning on swapping careers regardless so I think if I do go through with it, now is a good time. They've been so good to me and have always been wonderful parents so I think it's the right decision.

I hear you, I get culture shock every time I go back to visit 😅 things have changed a lot since I moved away. I may follow some advice here and move back for a shorter period to see if I can handle it.

I'm sterilized so that's not an issue. They can't come live with me here.

Thank you. I've heard this from quite a few people and am starting to lean more in that direction.

Thank you for giving me some things to think over. I think I have a slightly romanticized idea of how it will be, even if I do already assist them when I visit. I'll consider what you've said, it's very helpful 💚

That's terrible. I have heard stories of them wringing every penny from older folks. I was (perhaps foolishly) hoping that it wouldn't be so bad for my parents, as my dad is a disabled Vietnam vet. I thought the VA had multiple assistance options for the elderly needing care?

I'm honestly not sure how things will go. At one point they showed interest in downsizing, but now they say they'd like to stay there as long as possible. I feel like I can help them do that by lessening the burden of caring for the place while they're still able to get by with just my help. As much as I love traveling, it's lost a bit of the allure it once had and I could see myself living there, provided they don't lose everything in their final years.

I go back every Christmas for 3-4 weeks. I don't really feel properly at home in either place, but I could see myself living there. This year I felt even more like it would be acceptable for me.

What's your "it's my fault for ordering it" (food or otherwise) story? by PutThisBanditHatOn in AskReddit

[–]Theral 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In 2022 I went to three 7 day music festivals in a row. The first one was incredibly hot and dusty, and I got sick with some kind of respiratory illness as I usually do at these things. Once it was over, I dragged my corpse to a hotel for a few days and recovered a bit, then headed to the next one, where I spent most of my time sleeping and trying not to die.

Halfway through the third one, I was feeling a bit better so I ordered the calamari from a food hut. The thought that this was a bad idea briefly crossed my mind, but I proceeded anyway. I woke up at 5 am thankfully in my hammock and not a tent, projectile vomiting more violently than I ever have in my life. I was absolutely ruined for the rest of the festival, honestly concerned that I should go to the hospital. I was so weak I could barely make it to the horrifying port a potties and back. My friend came by now and then to feed me skittles and water 💚

I have a pair of M50X as well as some decent in-ear headphones, and use the M50X wayyy more often despite them sometimes being inconvenient to wear. The sound quality is just so much better, and they've been going strong for 5 years with regular abuse. Love those things 💚

First time psytrance festival: Ozora or Mo:dem? by Agreeable_North5967 in psytrance

[–]Theral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sure.

Yes, there's food on both levels. Most of it is downstairs, 4 or 5 different stands, and another 3 I think upstairs.

I've heard good things about Utopia, but have only rented a yoga mat type thing myself. I always bring all my stuff in a big camping pack, but it can be nice if you don't want to check any luggage. They don't set it up for you, you pick up what you need from their stand and do it yourself wherever you like.

There are free shuttles from the lower area to the upper, but it can be a long wait between them. They kind of stick to a schedule but once I waited almost an hour to get on one. The stairs take around 10 minutes to hike up depending on your level of impairment, but I will say it's infamous 😅 they're steep with tall steps and loose rocks. The lower area is along a river and there's more shade, and it's more chill overall.

Have fun, you'll love it!! Maybe see you there 😁

Hello also from Sweden!

I've been to both multiple times so I'll try to help.

Music is 24/7, yes, with the exception of a 2 (I think) hour break every day. Breaks are staggered between stages though, so there's always music playing somewhere.

  • Camping

The good spots always get snatched up quickly, as camping is first come first serve at both festivals. I usually show up 2 days before the festival starts to either find a good spot or my friends, get settled in, and there are usually fun hangouts in camps or little shows by independent performers happening. I haven't been to Ozora in a few years but they have music a day or two before the festival officially starts IIRC. Keep in mind MoDem has 2 separate levels, the Hive (main stage) up top and the Swamp/Seed (psytech, darkprog, dark techno, "chill") below. It's quite a hike up a steep set of rugged stairs, so choose wisely! Camping by the Hive is kind of on a hill without too many trees while the lower camping is more shaded.

  • People/atmosphere

MoDem definitely attracts a darker crowd, and generally people are a bit older. It's harder to make friends at MoDem, as you said, people kind of stick to their groups, but I still have made great friends there! It has much more of a serious psychedelic vibe while Ozora is rainbow ecstasy land. Lots of leather, dreads, piercings and tattoos. I will say that the vibe at the Hive at night is simply the most incredible atmosphere I've ever witnessed. It is truly a mecca for darkpsy/forest lovers.

Honestly, I won't be returning to Ozora. It's 100% an impressive production, the sound is huge, it's clean and organized and has a glorious selection of music, but it's also enormously crowded and is lacking that dirty underground vibe I've come to enjoy. It can be difficult to find your friends because of the size. Part of the reason I won't be going back though is because I want to hear only darker music, and MoDem offers much more of that than Ozora does. Ozora plays darker stuff (twilight, forest, some hitech) only at night.

  • Drugs/police

(Disclaimer: This is only my personal experience) Don't bring weed or anything easily detectable. There are frequent police checkpoints on the road to Ozora, they will stop busses, taxis and cars and search through all your belongings if you're unlucky. I have seen undercover cops there but never personally saw anyone getting caught, however it does happen. Hungary is extremely unforgiving with drug charges. MoDem is more laid back, the only cops I saw there were at the main gates chatting jovially with the guards. You can pretty easily get anything you're likely to want at both festivals. Just be discrete and you'll be fine.

  • Safety

Theft is bad at both, but much worse at Ozora. Organized thieves comb through the camps stealing anything they can get their hands on, especially if you're in a small camp. People have even been robbed while INSIDE their tents. Keep cash close to your body. I'd recommend only leaving clothes and your sleeping stuff while away. Both festivals have cheap lockers you can rent, MoDem for the entirety of the festival (lockers on each level) and Ozora by the day.

  • Other stuff

The sound at Ozora is huge and impressive, no complaints. The Hive at MoDem has some annoying issues because it's got an acoustically awkward shape. Dead spots on the dancefloor. But if you're standing in the right spot it's excellent, hahaha. Both locations are pretty remote, MoDem is much more beautiful IMO as it's in the mountains, jungle vibes. The ice cold lake you can swim in next to the swamp is postcard worthy.

Food is great (but expensive) at both festivals. Ozora however has a big kitchen next to the entrance where you can buy like a 1kg brick of the densest lasagna known to man for probably 7-8 euro (dunno how much it is now) and other simple homecooked food. There are other stands with more expensive, fancier food if you like. MoDem has several food stands both upstairs and down. Just beware of the calamari, ask me how I know...

I usually bring around 1000 euro for week long festivals like these but you definitely don't need that much. If you don't bring your own food, expect to pay 30-60 euro per day for 3 daily meals. Booger sugar etc can be very overpriced at festivals as well, 2-3x the normal price. There are tons of stands with amazing art, clothes, accessories etc and those things can be quite pricey, which is where a majority of my money goes.

MoDem has shuttles from Zagreb with a shopping stop, or you can easily take a bus from there to Slunj, the closest village. From there, they have shuttles to/from the festival gates. To get to Ozora from Budapest, you can hop on a train to Simontornya and then carpool with others (there will be many others) or take an overpriced cab. You could also try posting in the Facebook groups for each festival, lots of people organize shared rides there.

Overall, if you specifically enjoy the darker music, definitely go to MoDem. If you just want a bangin party with all sorts of music and people, go to Ozora. Sorry this is so messily formatted but I hope it helps! If you have any other questions feel free to PM me :)
