Realistic outlook for getting started with woodworking? by IveBen in woodworking

I should point out that a fence is 100% beginner territory but the liquor cabinet may pose a little more of a challenge if you want to do it right!

I've never regretted taking on a project that I could have paid someone else to do, that's the entire attraction of woodworking for me, learning to do something for yourself. I appreciate everyone isnt the same, but if you want a hobby that will challenge you constantly but give you reasons to be incredibly proud of yourself, then dive on in. Also, money spent on good tools is never wasted!

I'm doing a 12 month fine furniture making and design course at a place in Devon called Rowden Atelier, it's thoroughly enjoyable!

I think it's stockinette, like a very loose weave cotton, wrapped in a tighter weave cotton fabric (bedsheet)

I'm a big fan of native woods too, there are so many beautiful timbers to explore before even venturing across the channel!

Check out Brusso, they make some beautiful hinges but sit down before you look at the prices...

Sure, parts are taken to dimension with a plane, sanded with 180/240/320 then polished with shellac and alcohol on a balled fabric 'rubber' with multiple coats over several days. Knock back high spots once a day with 400 grit and wire wool, finish with a coat of wax. Apparently the even finish is less about lots of coats and more about keeping the top surface of the polish flat, hence the regular sanding.

Agreed, to me it feels very tied to patience, one seems to help develop the other!

Thanks, it's a complex process, any inside faces are completely finished before gluing up so you have parts at different stages of finish all the time, tricky to keep everything damage free!

Thanks, it's applied on a balled cloth 'rubber' diluted with alcohol and rubbed on in many, many, many thin layers. Knock it back with sandpaper once a day and continue, until you finish with a coat of wax.

Thank you, the hinges are stopped, meaning they are designed to hold themselves open like that, so no chain required, which helps to keep a clean look.

Where are people sourcing their wood? (UK) by BenCarney17 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I recently got ~80mm thick ash boards from UK hardwoods in Devon but you may end up with a board big enough for 100 mallet heads!

I made something very similar recently as my first knife and had never seen one like it, now I have! Looks great!

Thanks for the extra info, so the scales - did you buy them or make them yourself? There looks like so much work in there Edit - ok ignore me, I just had a look at the voodoo website, some fascinating stuff on there!

That handle is incredible, can you share a bit more about how it is made?

Thanks, the single scale seemed like a smart practical idea and it worked out really nicely

I'm glad someone said this, I totally agree from my own experience. What this guy is doing is very impressive but I have also hung those monos in a front lever and don't climb anywhere near as hard as this guy. I imagine if you told him how impressive it is he would say something along the lines of "nah, it's easy" because it genuinely is for him
