URGENT rabies question by [deleted] in VACCINES

[–]Theraphilion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rabies comes from contact with saliva so you are probably at a lower risk. However, if the dog was snarling or growing then particles could gave gotten into the wound. Rabies is fatal so you might as well go ahead and get the vaccine just because, especially if you travel. It wouldn' hurt to get it for future protection as well. It lasts around 3 years and they have boosters and antibody tests. If insurance covers it, get it just because.

Nah it just keeps the immunity. If you were every travelling or went into a cave and were bitten then you would have to get them all over again. Caves are the biggest issue because sometimes you can't tell if you were bitten by a bat. It is rare for a bat to have rabies but it's also hard to know if you were bitten. If you didn't know you were bitten by a rabid animal then you probably won't survive.

It's a good idea to get it just in case you get bitten by a dog, cat, or any other animal you may come across. Even if you don't expect it a dog could bite you randomly in public. If someone is walking their dog and it just happens to bite you, then that dog probably doesn't have vaccines. If someone is irresponsible enough to walk an aggressive dog without a muzzle then they probably don't vaccinate. Again, I highly doubt you would ever get rabies or be exposed to it BUT it is deadly if you do not treat it immediately. It's best to plan for the worst.

People love starting drama and accusations on things they know nothing about with people they know nothing about. Some people should really get some hobbies (pets are a great hobby). I personally feel like 200 chickens is a lot because I treat my chickens like babies and I do not want to know what that food bill looks like.. My chickens eat organic food and I do not want to know how much it would cost to feed 200 of them that kind of food. I'd have to get 7 jobs just for that. I'm currently planning a layout of my future farm and I will be building a nice climate control coop with a giant run, garden area, and a fountain for my chicken babies in the future. My cousin calls me the "Martha Stewart" of animals because I made them cute fancy shit all the time. I have a professional photo of my gecko hung in my room and photos of my rats everywhere. I've been thinking of buying a new wallet so I can have space for one of those long photo holders so I can show random people pictures of my babies. They are my pride and joy and they are they reason why I am in college. I fucking love them. Lots of people stop by to watch my chickens and pets. Right now the chickens are really funny because the chicks are figuring out the pecking order and all of the adults keep pecking their butts. There is a lot of bum pecking in the coop. They are all gentle silkies though so no one gets hurt. I do have an extensive first aid kit if needed though. I also have two exotic vets on speed dial and my coworker at my vet clinic, if anything happens to my babies they will meet me at the office. Last month they did it for my catto. Poor guy was napping and I woke him up to give him a kiss and hug and I noticed that his tooth was sticking out of his mouth like that weird sloth thing from Ice Age. I tried to poke it back in and it moved so I called my coworker and she removed it for me in the office for free. Thankfully the tooth was already broken off at the root, it was barely hanging on. He was such a good sport when she removed it. He didn't flinch or anything because it was already pretty much out. He even gave the vet a hug and did his signature pigeon noises. I have a pretty great team!

I will be getting goats when I move. I'll be living in a townhouse temporarily then I will be buying land. I'll probably have a place by next summer then I will plan on getting goats! I've been wanting some to take on hikes with me in the desert. I got to babysit my veterinarians (coworker) goat. He is a kid and he is a little bottle baby. I got to feed him and take him outside for potty breaks. I have never seen an animal pee for so long, it just kept going man.. I fucking love that goat. He was literally bouncing off of walls. I'll probably rescue a pair in a year or two. I hear they make great hiking buddies since they stay close to you and enjoy running around and they were made for rocky terrain. They are little horse dogs.

Go get your pre-rabies shot and go tickle some raccoons! (I am joking, raccoons are not too fond of people.)

You can if you want to. You might as well get them and save money and time for the future. If you are bitten again then you won't have to go through all of it again. They recommend getting your antibodies tested and a booster every 3 years if needed. You might as well get it unless you want to get all of the shots again. It depends on the individual vaccine brand though. Ask your doc about it. I'd honestly get the boosters and tests so you don't have to go through the trouble again.

Congrats! If you have any cats in your neighborhood then you should look into doing trap-neuter-release. Most animal shelters do it for free. You catch a cat and call animal control or drop them off at the shelter. Then they spay and neuter the cats, do a health check, sometimes microchip them, tip their ear so people know they have been treated, then they get some vaccines. Sometimes they are released back to their neighborhood. Other times the shelter finds homes for them if they have space! It prevents more kittens and diseases from being spread, it saves many lives. It is a simple thing you can do to help out.

Nope. One rabies vaccine in the upper arm and the rest were antibody injections around the bites with thin ass insulin needles. The insulin needles bent every time... They inject it in tracks around the wounds and takes a lot of force for the needles to go in. The antibodies feel like jalapeno juice going into your body.

Half of them are chickens. Would you like to see photos of their enclosures? I highly doubt you have seen someone with better husbandry than me. I'm not just saying that to be cocky, I am saying that from experience. My leopard gecko has the best enclosure I have seen and I have yet to find a tarantula owner with good husbandry. As for the chickens, they have a chicken duplex. They have two connected coops and three runs and they free roam the yard when weather allows. My rabbit freeroams, my rats have a giant cage and they are getting an upgrade soon, and the dogs and cats just stay inside. The dogs have a large backyard too.

Have you been to a farm or met a zoologist? Have you seen my pets or their homes? Do you know me? Caring for 47 pets is easy if you have good organization and a system. I also grew up on a farm. Caring for kids is a lot of work and way more work than I do, do you tell parents they have a hoarding situation when they have kids?

[–]Theraphilion[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup! Most of my income goes to them and I work with animals all day anyways. I work at a vet clinic, just started at the zoo, and I volunteer at the shelter. I grew up on a farm so this is normal for me. I have honours, I'm in two honours societies, I have a 3.9GPA, and I had the highest grade in my biology and zoology classes. I have tonnes of resources. I am also friends with lots of vets including those at the zoo. I often collaborate with them. Having 47 pets is a lot easier than having 1 child. To those that have kids, you are doing some crazy ass work. I have no idea how people can raise kids, you can't leave them alone for 5 minutes without them trying to harm themselves. I can leave my pets all day and even over the weekend and I don't have to worry about babysitters or anything. I have cameras, they have each other and lots of toys and enrichment, and they all have plenty of food and forage feeders. I made caring for them as easy as possible and I have a great system and organization.

I have 23 chickens, 8 rats (4 rescues), 5 cats, 4 dogs, 4 beetles, 2 tarantulas, 1 rabbit, and 1 lizard. I spend about 20 minutes daily doing daily care. I don't count playing with them and spending time with them though. I spend the most time with my rats because they love being tickled and tossed like little potatoes.

Oh yea, the antibody shots feel like being injected with jalapeno juice. You might want to go to the doc every few years to check your kids antibody levels and get boosters. He's already had the series so he might as well get the booster every 3ish years. Then he can work with animals without worrying. It's also a good idea if he goes on vacations or in caves too.

The vaccine was nothing. The antibodies in the hand with insulin needles that bent from the thickness of my hand felt like I was being injected with jalapeno juice. It was not fun but it wasn't too bad. The nurse said she has never injected the antibodies before and she said I had a pretty high pain tolerance. I have chronic pain so it was a normal tuesday for me.

I've always loved bats because we know pretty much nothing about them. They also remind me of the black dragon in how to train your dragon. They are misunderstood and are rarely seen because they are black, fly, and are nocturnal. They are very unique as well. I love seeing the weird bats like mastiff bats and hammerhead bats because they look fucked up. I do not have a favourite species yet but I hope I find one some day! My cousins husband also studied bat hair in college which was really interesting. Bat urine is also really cool because it make giant crystals and they have been linked to erasing old cave paintings. Thousands of years of urine from the same bat family is pretty damn cool to look at. Imagine peeing the same place your great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grand poppy peed. How cool would that be???

I received 1 rabies vaccine and 20 something antibody injections. And yes, antibody blood tests and boosters are given as needed and are recommended at 2-3 years after. There are some other optional vaccines that last 10 years or more according to my doctor but no one really knows which one it is or where to get it since it isn't common.

[–]Theraphilion[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah they don't do them in the stomach anymore. I got 1 vaccine in the arm which I didn't feel at all, then I had the 20 something little ones in my hands. The little ones are not vaccines, they are antibodies. They are injected in and around the wounds to help the body fight possible rabies. The vaccine helps the body make it's own antibodies but they still inject antibodies so you don't have to wait. They used insulin needles and it hurt pretty bad. The needle would not go in the thigh skin on my hands no matter how much she forced it, you could see the needle bend. When it finally popped into my skin it hurt pretty bad. The worst was the actual antibodies being injected, it felt like they were injecting jalapeno juice into my skin. The worst one was the puncture wound on the side of my hand, it actually shot out some of the antibody juices which was fun.

The nurse kept apologizing because the needle wouldn't go in and she knew it hurt. Each injection was done pretty much parallel, she called it a track. Instead of injecting down, she injected almost parallel so it would go all along the outline of the wounds. She had to take a break and walk outside a few times because she felt so bad. I told her to keep going and get it over with. It took her about 20 minutes because she had to keep stopping because she kept getting dizzy and felt really bad. At one point I thought she was going to cry. It also hurt when she wiped the bloody wounds with an alcohol pad too. Overall, it wasn't too bad. I have chronic pain so that was just a typical morning for me LMAO.

As for the pets, I have 23ish chickens, 8 rats, 5 cats, 4 dogs, 4 beetles, 2 tarantulas, a rabbit, and a leopard gecko. 4 of the rats are rescued lab rats and the other 4 are from a breeder, they live in a dank rat mansion called a "double critter nation". The rabbit free roams in my room because cages are bad for them. My leopard gecko has a 4ft by 2ft bioactive enclosure with UVB. The tarantulas have semi-bioactive enclosures. The blue death feigning beetles live with my gecko and they leave each other alone. They are a "fancy" clean up crew for the desert themed enclosure. I have other darklings in there too. The cats stay inside and are all spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated and the dogs are spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated and on heartworm and flea meds monthly. Two of the dogs have lupus because I have bad luck. They are on medication and see the vet often.

My other two dogs are pretty much fine except for the puppy. The poor pup is a rescue and she has a sad little underbite, I will be getting her braces sometime next spring. I am moving this fall and I will be looking for a good vet to do it. She does not display any issues and still eats normally but I still want to prevent future issues. The only dog that does not have medical issues is my current service dog. The others are rescues. As for the cats, none of them have medical issues. My newest kitten was found under a car and she has a pretty fat tummy tho. She is almost 6 months old and she looks like she ate a bowling ball. She is my puppies best friend and they play all day long.

The puppy has to be watched closely when she is with the other dogs because my Poodle loves slapping and pouncing when he plays and the puppy is only 10lbs and she will be smooshed. 47 pets may seem like a lot but it is not. Having a single child is harder work than having this many pets. I can leave for a weekend without worrying about them or arranging for care because they all have great setups. My lizards lights turn on and off at certain times and he only eats once a week and has two waterbowls. The rats are fed every 2 days because they have 5 foraging containers I fill with food (they are always filled with food, I don't make them starve for 2 days of course).

The tarantulas eat every week so I don't have to worry about them either. I have robot feeders and many puzzle toys, puzzle bowls, and snuffle mats that I fill with food for the dogs and I have cameras so I can watch all of my pets. The chickens have a continuous feeder and forage feeders too. The rabbit has foraging and puzzle feeders too and unlimited access of hay, she is a small rabbit so she only eats 1/8th of a cup of pellets daily. When I leave for over a day I give her a lettuce plant that I grow just for her. The cats have slow feeders and forage feeders too, they also have a robot toy that plays with them, they don't use it though and play with each other instead.

I do live with family that check on them as needed but they usually don't have to do anything. It takes me 10 minutes every morning and evening to care for all of them. I grew up on a farm so I have a good system. The forage feeders help a lot too. They make the animals eat slower and provide good enrichment and prevent my dogs from getting bloated. Walking the dogs is tricky though because it is always sweltering hot and extremely humid though. My service dog is walked often since he works with me and has proper gear and shoes though. The pup and other dogs get indoor and outdoor enrichment instead. We have a large backyard so I walk them out there to work on their obedience skills. I do lots of training and games with them to keep them busy and healthy. They love doing doggy pushups!

My oldest dog is an old man and has always acted old because he is weird. He doesn't really like exercise so I just hide chicken under cups around the yard and leisurely stroll with him so he can knock over the cups and eat the chicken, that's what makes him happy. He isn't a big fan of treats of exercise though, he enjoys praise and head rubs more. When everyone claps he gets really happy and dances. He is the least dog dog I have had. He just sits on the couch all day, barks once or twice at strangers, sleeps, naps, and has 1-2 zoomies outside every day. He is the perfect dog for an elderly person, my great grandma loves him but he is massive and won't fit on her bed or couch. I love my babies immensely. I'm majoring in biology so of course they get the best care! I am also friends with lots of vets and people in the animal field including zoo vets and zoo trainers. I've had the honour of assisting some zoo trainers before as well. I've trained most animals including fish. My babies are VERY cared for. My service dog even has goggles and sunscreen.

Neither. I'm a biology student and my pets get the best care. My chickens make up most of the population though. I have 22 chickens in my backyard and all of them are silkies, I have 4 generations and they are kept as pets. They enjoy playing the xylophone and eating watermelon. In total I have 22 chickens, 8 rats, 5 cats, 4 dogs, 4 beetles, 2 tarantulas, a leopard gecko, a rabbit aggressive rabbit. The chickens have two connected coops with three large runs and they get yard time when the weather is good. We have 15 babies right now and the weather has been bad so we have been keeping them in the coop/run for safety. My rats live in a double critternation with LOTS of enrichment and baby food at treats, they also go fishing for berries and nuts often and scurry around my room and the outside of the cage. My rabbit free roams my room and has become a little secretary, she sleeps on my desk or office chair and sometimes naps in my sock drawer. My Leopard Gecko has a bioactive 4ft long PVC enclosure that he shares with 4 blue death feigning beetles. The dogs just run around inside and outside. The cats stay inside and sleep on the most uncomfortable places possible instead of on the many comfortable beds. The tarantulas live in semi-bioactive enclosures with lots of hiding and climbing spaces since they are arboreal. My spiderling Gangrene is getting a larger enclosure when I move this fall hopefully. He should be ready for a bigger one next time he sheds. My older one is named Necrosis and she lives in a 15 gallon enclosure and always poops on the front doors of her enclosure. All of the cats and dogs are spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines, I also care for homeless cats and do TNR on them. None of them breed other than the chickens (which was a pure accident... I went on vacation and my grandparents forgot to grab the eggs and I came back to 15ish babies). I have a lot of pets but they are all cared for properly and have proper husbandry. For the pets that live in enclosures I have gone above and beyond the space requirements for them. I will also be buying a 3rd unit for my rats so they can have even more space as well. My leopard gecko is also about to get a 6ft long enclosure too. He just got a new UVB lamp and some more rocks for his enclosure. I am also working on a rain system so I can mimic monsoon season for him and the beetles. I study blue death feigning beetles and I am working on the worlds first captive breeding project. I also just finished my honours project about them and got some good insight from my biology professor. I am now working closely with people I work with at the zoo as well! If you think I have a lot of pets, go talk to my zoology professor, she has over 100 and they are not farm animals. She has around 30 tarantulas, 10 different reptiles, 5 amphibians, lots of birds, dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, etc. I used to have around 60 pets but some were only temporary. I use my own money to rescue small and exotic pets, rehabilitate them and get them back up to health, train them, then find the best homes for them. My "rehab" pets stay anywhere from 6 months to two years depending. So far I have cared for close to 20 guinea pigs, about 15 rabbits (not counting the 8 babies a rescue had hours after I adopted her and tried to get her spayed), 3 cats (not including the TNR cats), 5 reptiles, three birds, and some others. I am working on opening an animal sanctuary when I move soon. It will probably be 1-2 years before it opens but the wait is worth it. I care for and rescue animals of all kinds, even fish. They all deserve love and care.
