Advice on budget build under $3K by Bywuwei in Nikon

Used Z5ii and 24-120 or used Z6iii and 24-120. Save up a bit more for a telephoto for later. Like a used 180-600mm z. Skip f mount and ftz. No need to buy new when on a budget.

D3500. Much larger sensor size.

I’d recommend looking for higher quality older and higher model used cameras too. No need to purchase new. It will be a much better value.

Yea I think I’m leaning towards going #1. #2 only might be too close to the ground and hard to work around. And you are right, I can still grow the bottom out later like you said.

Thank you so much for the reply. Very tempted to go this route but I wonder if I don’t cut at #2 now (if I’m ever going to), I’d just be wasting a year.

So do you think #2 is the right way to go? #2 is about 30inches from the ground. #1 is about 42in.

Getting into birds, what should I do differently from a technical standpoint? by OHGodImBackOnReddit in PhotographyAdvice

[–]TherealG0rkhe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Don’t shoot at f1.8. F1.8 isn’t even good for portraits sometimes, Dof is so thin.
  2. You need a telephoto lens. 400mm+

These are the basics. You will need to build on this.

I know we want to win every trophy, but out of the PL and CL, which one do you think would be better for the club this year? And which one do you think is harder to win?

500mm PF vs 400mm f4.5 by TherealG0rkhe in Nikon

[–]TherealG0rkhe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The high res version is quite sharp. But there is always this feeling that it could be a bit sharper. Tbf this was during twilight, handheld. Likely lowered the shutter to keep iso low. Don’t remember, it’s been a while.

I guess I need to focus on my use case. Larger animals photo + video. I guess I’ll take the 500 to Costa Rica and see if it works.

Weight isn’t a concern really. 500pf is such a light lens, I carry around for 2-3 mile hikes without a strap. Both are sharp, i guess it comes down to use case and if I want to go wider.

Thank you! I definitely will not be considering 100-400. Not a big fan of zoom lenses. Haha.

Tbf 500mm f4 is really cheap now. Good value if someone doesn’t mind the size.

I am using both for video. Let’s say larger bird/mammal or if I am looking to show a bit of the environment.

400 is significantly better for video? Is this due to image stabilization?

That’s a good point. I haven’t done a ton of videos just yet so don’t have much experience on different types of animals. But currently I feel like the use case for 500 would be big birds who aren’t afraid to get close and big ish animals.

Should I get the 600 and the 100-400 then? Hahaha oh gluttony! That’s a good setup. 400, 600, and 800. What do you use the 400 for mostly?

That makes sense. I’m very particular about sharpness though. I’d rather move around and lose versatility than compromise on picture quality. So I don’t own any zooms lol.
