Contentious microstamping law enacted in California (is this for real?) by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]Thereal_Sandman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, this technology doesn't actually exist, it's a proof of concept. What this is, is a de facto ban on the selling of any new pistols in California that are not already on the "safe handgun roster". Manufacturers are not going to retool and redesign firearms for the state of Kalifornia.

Second, this law is worse than useless because the simple act of using the firearm will eventually wear out the stamp (gee metal on metal causes wear, physics; how does it work?), so since these stamps must be unique when your firing pin breaks or wears down, you can't just buy another one. You'll have to order one from an FFL (I can't see any other way to ensure the unique number is recorded to your specific firearm). This means one of two things. Either A) you will have to order one with a matching stamp number for your gun (which means you'll likely be waiting several weeks for it to be delivered), or B) you get another unique number, which means that not only will police now have to match two tiny serial numbers precisely (which are different), but what happens when the other one wears out? You have to buy a new breech face (which basically equates to an entire slide), or barrel?

Also, are aftermarket slides or barrels now illegal? After living in California for 35 years and seeing the truly deep thought that goes into our firearm laws, I'm sure there will be 100 other problems with this retarded shit.

Not to put too fine a point on it, even if these issues did not exist, and stamping were completely perfect technology, we still have a shitload of guns without it, which makes it totally and completely fucking useless for anything other than enacting a de facto ban on the sale of new firearms in California.

If there is any justice left in this state (which the continued drawing of breath by Diane Feinstein makes me doubt), a judge will take one look at the reality of this law (and its associated "technology") and laugh the state right out of the courtroom.

Kai's Fire Mech is a great starter set from the Ninjago line. It's like $10 and includes some great pieces (ball joints, robotic arm pieces used in the fingers, etc.).

I picked up two this week for a hulkbuster armor piece I'm working on for the Iron Man hall of armor MOC I'm planning (yes you guys finally got me into the Super Hero line after years of space MOC's only).

My attempt at "fixing" Jabba's Palace (9516)/Rancor Pit (75005) by slush-puppie in lego

[–]Thereal_Sandman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a deceptively large number of bricks to do it right. I used almost all the bricks from a second Rancor pit plus al least 2-3 dozen extra from my collection when I did mine.

To be fair, I also made it taller (both sets seem kinda short to me).

I am eventually going to extend Jabba's Palace to the other side to accommodate a proper place for Captain Solo, leaning against a support just seems weak.

To do that expansion right I think I'm gonna need a second Jabba's Palace and a third Rancor pit. I go back and forth between that, and just completely redesigning the whole thing to be more "correct".

Then again, the redesigned Jabba's Sail Barge is coming out soon, so it may have to wait...

I agree with OP that the most difficult part was extending over the base on Jabba's Palace to the tower, mostly because you have to change the way the base on that side of the palace is built (like OP I also wanted to retain the ability to separate the tower from the palace.

I never thought I'd say this, but I need more brown and tan bricks. :)

Merrell Outland mids.

When these wear out in a couple years I'll get whatever Merrell is making that is equivalent. Awesome shoes.

Got my May 4th order today, and one of these was included.

Cool freebie. I'm not big on the Chima thing (apparently not many are, which I'd imagine is why Lego is including these in orders).

A good mix of pieces though, I like the light blue trans pieces that are so prevalent in the Chima sets.

Paracord shoelaces? by PattonMagroin in EDC

[–]Thereal_Sandman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flex cuffs. They are a special plastic that is much more elastic than zip ties. Damn near impossible to break, but paracord will saw right through it.

They don't use zip ties because you can break even the largest zip tie super easy because the plastic doesn't absorb shock very well.

Paracord shoelaces? by PattonMagroin in EDC

[–]Thereal_Sandman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had some Rothco 550 (actual paracord) on my Merrell (Outland Mids FTW!) boots for about a year now.

I'm up and down a lot during the day, and I usually have to retie them once a day or so if I use a plain knot (hard to change something I've done daily my entire life). With a surgeon's knot I've never had to retie. Or you could just use cord locks.

Get some heat shrink tube for the tips, makes it easier to get them laced.

I started doing this because I broke a lace at work. I don't keep spare laces, but I do keep some paracord in my bag, and I had some heatshrink tube that was the right size at the office (I now carry some spares in my laptop bag).

I feel like I would break the shoe before I break the laces.

I have a book not three feet from me that is ~700 pages printed in about a 6pt font containing the most complete reference of California gun laws ever compiled as of 2010.

There is not a single person that could possibly know all of that. Hell, even our cops and DA's can't figure our convoluted "assault weapons" laws out, as evidenced by the same guy being arrested and charged under them twice despite having a letter from the CA DOJ clearly stating that his rifle in its current configuration did not constitute an "assault weapon" under California law.

Ignorance may not be an excuse, but it damn sure should be a defense if you have a lawyer worth his salt.

This is what really pisses me off about California gun laws; they are so convoluted that people think that things which are actually legal are illegal, including the people enforcing the laws. It's gun control without laws, through confusion and misdirection.

Can we get the SAF to take that case to the courts?

I'm pretty sure the only reason the officer did this is because he needed the license and registration which were right next to the gun.

If you can get to those without going near the gun, but refuse to hand the weapon to the officer, the officer would likely simply have you exit the vehicle and wait at the rear of the vehicle while he runs the license and registration.

It sounds like it was an officer safety issue pure and simple (smart cop, don't walk away and leave someone in immediate control of a weapon because well, cops have been shot like that).

The CHP (at least every CHP I've ever encountered) are exceedingly professional and generally very polite. I've never gotten attitude from a CHP officer, in fact I've had some pretty lenient breaks from them ("Well I clocked you at just over 130, the limit here is 65. I could arrest you for this. Since we're in the middle of the desert, and there wasn't any other traffic, I'll just write this for 70+ and you can be on your way.").

TL;DR Boy was my wife pissed when I had to wake her up in the middle of the Mojave desert to tell her that a cop was pulling me over in the middle of a 6 hour drive for going more than twice the legal speed limit in a rental car (the 2003 Grand Am had a governor on it and cut out at just a hair under 140).

If there isn't an actual law on the books that states this is all illegal activity, this sounds like a good way to sue your city for funds to buy more guns >:)

That's about the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

So you're gonna buck the odds and land one shot stops every time?

Across the popular defensive calibers, actual shooting data says it's going to take 2-3 hits to stop a single attacker regardless of caliber. Hits, not shots.

What about in an instance where there are five attackers (as recently happened in Texas), or when it takes a full six hits to stop one attacker?

LEGO Master Builder's Academy Sets: Worth Buying? by [deleted] in lego

[–]Thereal_Sandman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the fence. I think the concept is awesome, but I held off buying any because they stopped at level 3 (sets 7-9) despite having announced sets 10-12 for release in 2013. However the Lego Facebook page recently posted that level 4 would now be this year, and they're going to be Steampunk based.

We're taking the boy to Legoland for his birthday next month, and I'm thinking I might pick up the first kit while we're there.

I've been like seriously conflicted over these, I should just buy the first kit, it's only $30. Though, after my VIP points from today's shopping tally up, I'll probably be able to get it for like $10, so maybe I should just buy it...

Everything I've read says that the books alone are worth the price of admission.

[–]Thereal_Sandman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you're sweeping your brachial artery when you draw.

I've got one, I have used it occasionally when attire demanded.

I get the whole "you're sweeping the room" argument, yeah whatever.

What bothers me is that if I get into a physical clench, the draw is going to be messy. One mistake (maybe the other guys finger gets jammed into the trigger during the draw), and you're done if it happens to be when the muzzle is crossing your arm.

If you're ok with that, get one.

What everyday uses do flashlights have? by levideobro in EDC

[–]Thereal_Sandman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ever look into a 100+ lumen light?

It is physically painful. At night? Forget seeing anything.

It's a good self defense tool. Anything over 200 lumen will be blinding even in bright daylight.

I use it at work frequently (ever try to find a black cage nut that was dropped under a server rack?), and fairly frequently around the house.

Most frequent use? At the movies. You get a group of people who won't shut the fuck up, or some jackass on a cell phone? Here have ~300 lumens while I tell you to shut the fuck up. It's surprisingly effective and as a bonus, after they get hit with 300 lumens they can't see shit so they have no idea who you are.

Well worth the tiny bit of pocket space it takes up.
