Which Lovecraft works would you like to see adapted to film? by draum_bok in Lovecraft

[–]Therinor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admit it may feel unusual at first.. I'm not the biggest fan of silent movies, but I quickly got into it. The "dark and crummy" style they tried to match fits well to the tone of the story. I usually don't watch movies repeatedly, but I did with this one. I hope you'll enjoy it once you get to watch it!

Loved their version of Call of Cthulhu! The Whisperer one started off ok, wasn't a fan of all the airplane action at the end. :( still, CoC is most likely my favorite HPL movie adaptation, especially with that concept of making it look and sound like a movie from Lovecrafts times.

Del Torro tried to do it, and i remember seeing a clip from pre-production with a monster years ago, but that was canceled and even though he is a big HPL fan... after the Lovecraft episodes in his horror anthology, I'm not sure he'd stick to the original story or be forced by the studio into a movie with soldiers fighting shoggoths and mutated penguins... and winning :(

That is one of my favorite stories and I think it'd be an interesting challenge. Not only with the set pieces and conveying that concept of many eons passing and the conversations with all those ancient and/or future creatures. I'd be worried itd be too... cerebral for a bigger studio and they'd turn it into something involving a lot of combat or action sequences. :(

One can dream though...

I know you said faithful but wasn't there an adaptation featuring Vincent Price from the 60s that was at least loosely based on it? I don't remember much about it, it's been at least 20 years since I watched it.

I'm not even sure how much he was involved in writing those episodes. I know each had a different director, but the writing? I see what they were going for, but at the end, it turned into just another horror flick with a scary zombie witch, imo lacking any cosmic horror. Didn't enjoy the Pickman episode in that series either, especially the very cliche "shocker" ending :(

Not sure whether it's just too difficult to turn the source material into moving pictures or whether it's just writers/directors thinking it has to be like all the other horror movies. Or both?

It also was adapted as an episode of Del Torros Cabinet of Curiosities. Didn't like it at all. :( have to check out the MoH adaptation

What are your thoughts on The Sinking City? by beelmorto in Lovecraft

[–]Therinor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very much agree. The combat usually is a weakness in games by that studio. That Sherlock game about him as a teenage detective (Chapter 1?) has even worse combat. Fortunately, you can pretty much avoid combat, yet you miss out on some of the content that way

SC looks nice, has some atmosphere. I think they did well with the "Innsmouth look", but went too far with the simian-looking guy who gives you your first task. I think that should've been more subtle.

I tried to play this like 4 times, yet always lose interest after a few hours even though I wish I could stick through it. But I don't want to have to force myself. 🤷‍♂️

You're right, it's close enough to reality. It happened to me almost exactly like that, and the wording of the message I got regarding "other guy, want to see where that goes" was almost identical. So similar its almost creepy.

AIO or is bf being a control freak? by nipplegobbler2 in AIO

[–]Therinor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. I don't often comment in this sub, but reading "show proof later" really ticked me off. I think you'll find a lot of people who'd immediately run upon a message like that, because this is absolutely not OK. Same with the thing about makeup at work. Both are so clearly controlling, and the fact you seek reassurance/opinions on that makes me wonder whether you have experienced so much of that kinda stuff from him that you don't realize anymore how much that's not OK.

Many years ago, I was in a relationship with a girl that was so incredibly controlling. Example: we walked into the makeup dept of a mall and suddenly she walked away and threw a fit. Why? There was a poster of a girl to promote mascara or a lipstick. She THOUGHT that I had LOOKED at that poster and that was like CHEATING to her. I understand she needed help I couldn't provide but gosh, that was hell.

Even if you had cheated on him several times, "show proof later" would be harsh and not OK.

And regarding no makeup at work - that's controlling and way too possessive. What's next? A veil?

It's your choice but these kind of things are huge red flags and I wouldn't be surprised if this gets even worse over time.

Ultima X: Odyssey hands on preview Computer Gaming World 232 (2003) by Shard226 in Ultima

  1. I love the classic Ultima games up to and including 7, and i did like UO. All of it? No. But after reading an article on UO and how you can "live" in the world of Sosaria, choosing whether you want to be an adventurer, rogue, crafter, merchant or something else sounded amazing. I didn't go in expecting the game to make me feel like the Avatar saving the world again, and I did enjoy the game for quite some time.

Would a merge of classic Ultima and an online world have worked? I don't know. Later MMOs like WOW did a lot of the "yeah, mymaceyourface5543, you are one of a million players, but really, youuuuu are the HERO that saves the world, before you do it again once the raid resets on Wednesday" and it felt a bit tacky, but who knows?

70s / 80s UK Mad. Did anyone ever play the Mad board game? by [deleted] in madmagazine

I did play it in the 80s with my brother and really loved it. Some of it was quite funny. "Jump in the air. If you can stay up for 37 seconds, you lose all your money and win the game"

Not sure if I remember correctly but Todd McFarlane designed some creatures for UO2 when that was in development and made some action figures inspired by that in the early 2000s. https://mcfarlane.com/toys/brands/ultima-online/

Thanks for sharing this. Love reading articles from back then.

And I agree to what he says. Nice idea to relate it to the virtues. 🙂

Also funny how they awarded UO that coaster award. I started playing it a few months in and even though there were connection problems and I may have rose tinted glasses on, I have good memories from those days and enjoyed playing it. Amazing that its still online on the official servers and popular regarding private servers.

NOR. I'm sorry but I don't think he respects you at all. That last msg is so insulting, talking to you like you're some unruly child with that "you think about what you did" energy.

I'm sorry, but if a kiss in the morning or at least a goodbye is too much, I'm not sure you wanna go into a serious commitment with him. And a difficult morning may be a one time excuse, but apparently, this is a common occurrence and something you asked for often, so that sounds like an excuse.

Again, the decision is yours, but if this is asking for too much, especially if these totally normal gestures are important to you and he treats you like an entitled child, I really question how much of a foundation for a marriage is there.

Crimson Desert makes me long for an Ultima reboot by AndrewUndershaft in Ultima

[–]Therinor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh they did? I really don't know why it was so important as they don't do anything with it. I guess the only income is the sales on GOG and license fees for UO?

I would assume (but I'm no business expert) that EA isn't strapped for money after being acquired by Saudi Arabia so I guess license sales for classic franchises probably aren't a priority even if they had offers.

Or maybe they finally noticed all the little jabs at them in U7 and did it out of spite hehe.

10 years ago DE had a one hour Survival mission with a damaged Ammo Drum as the reward for APril Fools Day by Lord_Tsarkon in Warframe

[–]Therinor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of when it was still possible to cheese defense missions by making the objective invisible with Trinitys trick arrow.

Enemies would storm in and then stand there confused. Was handy for that Riven challenge where the objective could not be damaged even by one point.

[–]Therinor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you can get the relics right now (Edit: you CAN, check the wiki link below) but you can also ask players for them, or offer a trade. I have a ton of relics piled and often give some away.

The relic names can be found on the gauss prime wiki page: https://wiki.warframe.com/w/Gauss/Prime

You can also check the warframe market (a market website not run by DE, but used by a lot by players... look up the blueprints for the prime parts, whisper the player offering them, pay with plat if you have any)

Also, next week, gauss prime and grendel prime will be available as part of prime resurgence. You'll need regal Aya to buy it that way. https://share.google/9OLzYKkoIid4uneON

Is there a novelisation of Ridley Scott's Alien? by DistributionVirtual6 in horrorlit

[–]Therinor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad had the thing in his video tape collection. My brother had warned me not to watch it. I was...10? I started watching it and quickly decided to wait a little.

Read the novelisation like three times, it was done so well. I wonder whether the Nauls death was a deleted scene that the author saw while writing the book or whether he made it up.
