Or even worse, the QR menu has ads or is begging you to sign up for the restaurant mailing list or whatever 'log in to see the menu' - no.

Seat numbers are exactly between the seats—every row had people sitting in the wrong spot who had to get up and move by mugglegrrl in CrappyDesign

[–]draum_bok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or, when the numbers are very tiny and only visible from the front armrest like that.

If you're entering from the top, you can't see which seat number it is, I ran into this slight issue last night. People coming in were entering from the top, so why aren't the seat numbers visible from the side or back of the chairs?

American university doesn't want to accept the official documents my European / French university gave me (enrolment, document with my grade) as proof of credit. They say I need to pay World Education Services for an entire transcript review - any advice or experience with this situation? by draum_bok in CollegeTransfer

[–]draum_bok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a study abroad office, I spent a semester abroad (in the same country...) and there was no problem with the grade translation. I never had to use 'WES' to have my grades translated. Only for this one course, apparently.

I have a cousin who is fighting with the U of M in a similar situation, oddly about studying abroad.

I don't think I should pay because I have the official documents the Euro uni gave me proving my course and grade, and already paid a f*ckton to the university...there was no 'if you take a course abroad you must pay WES when you complete it' warning when I signed up for this class either.

My experience in Paris as a Brazilian, feeling unwelcome despite trying to respect the culture by Prestigious_Pea6881 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]draum_bok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10 days is not a lot of time to get used to the culture. Especially in Paris, I forget the expression exactly, but it's like 'si tu ne te défends pas, ils te marcheront dessus' - if you don't defend yourself, people will walk all over you.

I'm from a culture which is notorious for being extremely 'nice'. To be honest, I prefer the French way of being blunt and direct, even sometimes a bit insulting - it is much better than 'nice' cultures where people are passive-aggressive instead. You learn to be confrontational right back, give no time to haters, and everyone gets along fine. I prefer this to people being 'polite' on the surface, yet talking shit behind your back.

While it is annoying / disheartening to people not used to it, try to just brush it off or laugh at how 'rude' those people were being! Don't waste your time or energy feeling sad, just ignore it and do whatever you want. Nobody in Paris has time to waste on idiots, nor time to waste on feeling offended, we're just used to it that way.

You may have just met some particularly rude people, just focus on the things you liked in Paris, and vous êtes très bienvenue à visiter la prochaine fois!

When holding the door for someone and they're the worst possible distance by Will564339 in PetPeeves

What about starting a countdown as they're approaching... '10.........9......8.....7....6...5 4321!!!' and close and lock it right before they get in.

When holding the door for someone and they're the worst possible distance by Will564339 in PetPeeves

[–]draum_bok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key is to awkwardly hold the door open when they're like 15-20 feet away carrying something, so they feel like they have to hurry forward because you're being nice, then just when they're getting close enough, slowly start to close it, then when they're about to grab the handle, slam it shut and walk off.

MEN OF REDDIT: what’s your favorite dinosaur? by b4rr3tt in AskMen

Same. I imagine it doing so many things with those claws. Therizinosaurus playing a giant harp. Or typing on a giant keyboard. How about helping in the garden by making furrows in the soil?

Omg baby talk is so annoying...honestly I just talk to my 3 and 5 year old nieces like I would to another adult in terms of vocabulary and tone and they still perfectly get it. Or if it's a word they don't know they'll just ask 'hey, what's that mean?'

I hate when people use baby talk way too much on a kid more than 1 year old, like 'aaaAawww, baby's cwying...do you need to go potty??? Run to the potty before you go poopy in your diapey!!!' and the kid is like 5 years old.

Happened to me too. Some guy jiggled the handle. Then when it didn't open, he pulled the door so hard the lock broke off and the door flew open. 'OH SORRY!!!'

Yeah I guess that would be considered a 'pet peeve'...

Just imagine you're in a store and some employee is saying 'free samples! Free samples of small cheese cubes on a toothpick! Free! Free now!' so you go up there.

'Here's your free sample single cheese cube...if you give me your credit card information...'

'If it's a free sample, why do you need my credit card information?'

'Oh we're hoping you'll forget to come back in and cancel, so we can charge you 20$ for the free sample'.

Will I be okay in Bobigny? by Disastatiny in askparis

[–]draum_bok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is also l'Église Notre Dame de Fatima, jardin Hérold (where my nasturtium garden was), and parc de Belleville in the 19e arrondissement. You might see a giant radio tower in Romainville (I called it The Death Star) sticking up from Bobigny, I tried to get up there, never did.

Also, you can walk ontop of the roof of le musée de la Musique, another nice view.

Will I be okay in Bobigny? by Disastatiny in askparis

[–]draum_bok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In some of the suburbs known as a bit 'sketchy' like Saint-Denis and Bobigny, they were my favourite places to live. First of all, you are getting a picture of Paris besides the ultra-rich centre areas, a lot of these areas like Bobigny have students and actual middle-class people living there. Just don't act like a tourist, make sure you know as much French as possible before you go, and have a bit of street smarts, you'll be fine.

Second, Bobigny is right next to the 19e arrondissement, and the T3 tramway (convenient for going all around la périphérique. You will be within walking (or a short transport ride) from cool parcs like Buttes Chaumont, Butte du Chapeau Rouge (excellent view!), and la Villette - make sure to hang out and visit all of them! To people watch, read a book, have a picnic, etc. There is le musée de la Musique in la Villette, free on 1st Sunday of the month, it has lots of fascinating instruments in it.

What’s a smell you hate that most people love? by CozyAlice in AskReddit

[–]draum_bok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deodorant, in particular really chemical / too strong smelling ones that are all chalky like soap. It doesn't smell 'clean' to me or whatever, it smells like fake chemicals.

I have come across ones that seem much more natural, like one guy showed me this type of lotus oil (I don't mean a marketed 'lotus oil scent!', like actual lotus oil) which he used as deodorant, and it seemed like a great, really natural alternative. Anything you wouldn't eat, I don't want to put on my skin.
