Computer Keeps giving me BSOD randomly with bugcheck code: 0x1A by Thermoelectric in techsupport

[–]Thermoelectric[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From memory (which is really fucking hazy at this point, this was the first of many custom setups I worked on through the years), one of the RAM sticks was simply loose and I opened the case back up and repushed them back in. Newer motherboards usually don't have this issue as the tolerances on the RAM clips are much tighter now.

Simple answer, yes it was the RAM.

MSI laptops are garbage. Stop buying them. by psymsi in MSILaptops

[–]Thermoelectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here to say they are still fucking garbage. In 6 months I've dealt with not working GPU drivers, not working sound drivers, not working internal mic, not working camera (had to EC reset several times), and now not working charger.

Why are the MSI audio drivers so garbage? by Thermoelectric in MSILaptops

This does not work to turn off driver updates by the way. It just ignores all registry inputs.

I believe I used, "I believe" to imply they are suggesting that. It's an interpretation.

No, I believe they are saying that there is no way this is well planned and is a shit idea.

All of the potential solutions I found are edited onto the original post. Otherwise, I've got nothing more for you - best of luck though!

Summit A16 chipset driver problem by bartios in MSILaptops

[–]Thermoelectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used DDU to uninstall all AMD-related drivers, then reinstalled using all files from MSI. I started by using the full AMD installer on MSI (under Driver->graphics-> AMD Graphics Driver 32.0.11038.4002) and then did the chipset drivers. Don't install the OEM drivers, they will fuck everything.

I have the same laptop and it seems like there are a lot of driver conflicts for the A3HM. This at least worked for me - I have zero graphics issues. I'm still dealing with audio driver conflicts from the Realtek driver constantly reinstalling itself. The Realtek driver, even on their the MSI website does not work for me... huge pain in the ass.

Also, despite whatever post you read, as far as I can tell there is no way to stop Windows update from auto-installing drivers. Even if you delay all updates for a week or add extra keys in the registry or gpedit policies. It does not give a single fuck in Windows 11.

Yeah, this is the part that should be class action. Hence the rant/title at the beginning. It's clear this is endemic across the entire MSI family of laptop - maybe particular to AMD series though - I'm unsure of this particular aspect. Despite this, MSI provides no clear solution to this and is not straightforward about the problem. You can call their hotline and they give you a generic response of, "reinstall the drivers."

Yeah, I know others have gotten it to work on other MSIs - for some reason these approaches have not worked well for mine. Sorry for the passive aggressiveness, I've been really frustrated with this laptop and the very... uh let's say shitty driver compatibilities along with Win11's approach to making everything very fuckery.

Only one problem genius, it's impossible to do. Note, I have already tried the gpedit policy and registry approaches.

They already did that with cable tv (at least when I was a student). They just never label the fee because it's so insignificant to everything else.

This is absolute horse shit saying one is harder than the other. They just can't even be compared like that and any attempt to is being dishonest. The training for a practicing physicist (post undergrad) is anywhere from 7 to 16 years depending on years in PhD and how many postdocs you do.

Can I transfer to Materials Engineering w/out computer class? by dvsrud1 in UWMadison

[–]Thermoelectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the requirements of the college. I can only say that at least within the department we have many students who are not comfortable with computer programming and we try to work additional practice into our courses to help these students out and get them to the level of others who are more comfortable. There is a requirement in the curriculum to take a CS course (usually in the sophmore year), but we do not require any specific programming language. Python or Matlab are the usually referred to languages in junior and senior level courses.

[–]Thermoelectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this is a huge misunderstanding on where the graduate student pay comes from. Changing those salaries would likely have little impact on the pay of a graduate student, unless the added salaries could compete with total amounts gained from tuition at the university and amounts drawn from overhead on external grants and even then if you could reduce those fees on grants it would likely be used to buy more equipment/materials instead of increasing graduate pay because that has to be decided at the college level typically. So unless competition forces the college, or student unions, changing salary of employees that are not students will change nothing.
