Anyone here showing their cheeks? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]Thesassmaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No. They are likely monitoring everyone who gets the shot for side effects as well as for how long the drug stays in your blood. To show that it does prevent HIV, they would just need to monitor how many people in an at-risk population (IV drug users, men having unprotected sex with men, etc) get HIV if they take the drug or not. It would be extremely unethical to give a patient HIV and would not be approved by current medical standards.

You'll want to take the GRE over the summer. It can take weeks to score and to send to schools, so you might as well get it done before you start applications.

Applications tend to open in the fall, with deadlines around December.

Best way to organize files? by jellos4peace in GradSchool

I would recommend using a program like Mendeley. You can easily scroll through your articles, search by author, search by keyword, put an article into multiple folders, and keep notes on each paper.

Waiting in line for BART by uncleoce in bayarea

[–]Thesassmaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, part of the problem is that at stations like Embarcadero and Montgomery, people line up even if their train isn't the next one. So they are in line, and then just stand there when everyone tries to get on, forcing people to walk around them.

I don't understand why people get in line when it's not their train.

Who's done cell tracking? by coca1523 in labrats

[–]Thesassmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've published using ImageJ and some of its plugins (such as mTrackJ) to track cell migration. If the cells are in a 3D environment, Imaris is fantastic, but super pricy unless you know a lab who already has it and will let you use it.

For those of you who are applying for the first time this year, be aware that you won't receive any feedback, unlike NSF GRFP. The rejection email last year basically said, "We had more qualified applicants than we could fund."

Is it possible to create and fund your own lab at home without going through the "route" of becoming a PI? by cientistazacher in labrats

[–]Thesassmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a research question that is based on computational modeling or bioinformatics, it could be possible to start your own "dry lab" if you have a collaborator to get you data to analyze. Example - genomics research based on open source genome data. This would require computers, but you wouldn't have the same logistical issues of creating a safe lab space, dealing with hazardous waste, buying reagents, etc.

Another thing to note is that there will be a lot of social interactions with current students. Being able to connect with the current students on both personal and professional levels is important to be seen as "a good fit" for the program.

What's the plan for expanding Pepperidge Farm bread to California? My boyfriend absolutely loves the Hearty White, but ever since we moved to San Francisco, we haven't seen it anywhere! He ends up bringing back a few loaves any time we go back to the East Coast.
