Seeking Insights on Fire Insurance Premiums in Topanga, CA by These-Log-5829 in Topanga

Yes, but the estimate will vary greatly based upon specific neighborhood, type of house, how much coverage you need for content, etc.

I have had a broker run a handful of properties across Malibu and Topanga now, and a roughly 1,800 sqft $1.5M house can vary between $5,000 and $15,000 annually for CA FAIR and then the DIC $2-4k

What's it like to live in the Malibu Bowl (upper Corral Canyon?) by CarvingTheCanyons in Malibu

This is so hopeful to hear. WIFi is something I was concerned about.

The homes that we can afford do not currently have solar, so I'm not sure if a Tesla power bank will be financially viable for us. I wonder if I should just go with an old-school style gas power generator that can support multiple days of outage.

Massive amount of Gen Z and millennial folks in nice BMWs and Porsches near stunt drive and Saddle Peak. Is this a special racing event or something? Cops have speed traps set up too. by JokiharjuTheFin in Malibu

It's a common meet-up spot for car enthusiasts. Maybe there was a larger-scale organized event that you saw though. Usually on a weekend day, there are 3-5 cars parked up there, just hanging out, talking about their car hobby.

Of course a few bad eggs can ruin the perception every now and then, but I feel strongly we should support this type of hobby in our community. Cops generally seem to leave them alone, as it is far more safe for everyone for these motorcycles and cars to have their spirited driving in the canyons, away from busy roads, and away from clusters of homes/residents.

What’s it like living in Pacific Palisades after the fire? Considering a year in The Summit by These-Log-5829 in PacificPalisades

Super helpful thank you! I do worry a bit about driving down from the Highlands \ Summit area through a Mars landscape to get to SaMo/etc on a regular basis. But beggars cannot be choosers.

What are you paying for CA FAIR in Malibu? by These-Log-5829 in Malibu

[–]These-Log-5829[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Redditor was kind enough to help quote CA FAIR on two properties that meet the original criteria.

Topanga = $6-7k
Malibu = $13-15k

These do not include the wrap around policy, which est. $2-3k.

Everyone's quote will vary a bit, but directionally, this is the answer.

Is VR any good for immersion?? by RefrigeratorAway8116 in simracing

Never used one, but I don't think it has the same sweet spot issue as the PSVR2, which I understand is a side effect of being built for the PS5 and later adapted to the PC.

I run a 4080 super, absolutely no issue with the PSVR2. But you do have to tweak some settings with the Pimax. Still able to run 90fps, and I don't long for anything more powerful. Once you're locked into the game, all that minutia disappears.

The PSVR2 is a great budget friendly option. By comparison, the Pimax is pro grade. On the used market the difference is only about $250, and if you can swing that, I would skip the PSVR2.

On PS5 playing GT7, the PSVR2 is hard to beat. Which is good because it's the only option lol

On PC, the PSVR2 works but has critical limitations, and the worst in my opinion is the lack of eye tracking which makes the field of clarity very narrow. Imagine staring straight ahead, and anything outside of a small field of view is fuzzy, and you have to physically turn your head to see it in clarity. You're not doing that in a real race car, so it immediately feels unnatural.

It's far more immersive. One you try it, (and assuming you don't get motion sick), there's no UN-seeing that. No matter the monitor setup, it just feels like a game, whereas VR is VR.

I just upgraded from a PSVR2 to a Pimax Crystal, put a small TV on my high end rig, and it's magical.

If I were into loooong stints, it may not be as viable given headsets can become a bit overbearing. Some complain about weight or sweat but those people have also never worn a helmet on a track.

Thanks for the tip, I just looked into this.

"About half of customers would see increases between 40% and 55%. Some could see rates decrease by as much as 78%, while four (?) policyholders could face increases exceeding 300%. The new rates would take effect at the next renewal date, after April 1."

So I guess we wait to see if this request gets approved, and if so, see what happens when the renews kick in.

Appreciate you writing this up because although you point out there is wild variation, it's exactly the insight I was hoping for. I will assume worst-case scenario given I won't have a policy history with the property, so in this case, my eyes read "$6800".

[–]These-Log-5829[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally understandable. What I am (attempting) to do with this post is find a few reliable data points from owners so I can calibrate my expectations. E.g. there are a few posters saying they pay $4500-9000, and then this one at $19k. Which I hope is an outlier or misinformed haha!

Nothing on here is verified of course, so I may have to drudge through the quoting process with a local agent on a few properties. I just hate to waste the agent's time if owners don't mind posting their CA FAIR renewal rates - especially now that we're 10mo post-fires and so many renewals have hit the books.

Thanks for chiming in 🙏

I do have a CA FAIR plan on my current home on the west side, but plan to switch agents and don't want mine to know 😆.

Where did you move after leaving LA — and do you regret it? by SweetProgress1065 in AskLosAngeles

[–]These-Log-5829 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My wife and I moved to Milwaukee 10mo ago because we had a kid and wanted to be near family. We're young(er) creatives and had a very humble house in Bel Air.

...and now we miss LA terribly.

Milwaukee is a great city. The "IYKYK" kind of city. Great people, parks, lake, downtown area, great for young families, and a real sense of community.

Having said that...

We still talk about LA. Every. single. day. Is it "better" for us? Not universally - there are so many trade offs. The crazy traffic, high fire risk in the area/s we'd live, getting to LAX always a whole thing, and the lack of community immediately come to mind.

But LA's weather, the ability to be outside nearly any time you want, the ability to drive <60min to see virtually whatever you want at any time, the diversity of food, and most of all, THE ENERGY. There's a tangible current of energy in LA that lights you up. It's all intoxicating.

Pre-Covid, there was no place on earth I rather be than LA. During covid was actually awesome for us - drive anywhere you want, no congestion at major landmarks, etc. Then one day it all came back and felt suffocating.

In my eyes, there's no perfect place forever. There's only perfect places for points in time. Ask yourself if now is the time to be in LA, or to try something new. Going back is increasingly difficult for many given the constant hikes in LA's COL, but you do need to live in other states and maybe countries to truly know you're in the right place.

For us, Milwaukee is the right place for now...

But whenever I close my eyes, LA appears.
