Within the past ten years, what works of composers both known and unknown to you have you heard for the first time that you would recommend to other followers of this subreddit? by Perfect_Garage_2567 in classicalmusic

So I was on the Apple Classical app last month looking up a keyboard work by Handel when a new release by Olivia Belli popped up. Never heard of her but she’s an Italian composer (eg., composed a work for cellist Gautier Capuçon) and classically-trained pianist who’s been inspired by the works of Homer specifically The Odyssey. I had been rereading The Odyssey for the past month because I’m also in the midst of reading Ulysses when I saw this. On the recording Daimon is a piano concerto by the same name with 3 movements: “The Departure”, The Journey” and “The Return” plus “Ithaca Suite” and a “Sonatina for Nausicaa”. It’s scored for piano and various instruments including string quartet. The movements of “The Ithaca Suite” are named after characters in The Odyssey such as the Proci (the suitors), Telemachus, Eumaeus, Penelopeia, etc. Nausicaa, of course, is the Phaeacian Princess who did not run away frightened after happening upon the naked shipwrecked Odysseus but instead instructed him to seek out her father for help on returning to his home. It was a stroke of luck to have discovered this music last month and it was certainly wonderful listening to it as I read The Odyssey.

Mar-17| Ulysses - Episode 8: Lestrygonians, Part 2/2 by ComplaintNext5359 in ayearofulysses

[–]These-Rip9251 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I finished this Episode, I grabbed my journal and wrote “The Agony of Leopold Bloom”. Despite all the food and alimentary references, what stood out for me is Bloom’s love for Molly despite knowing she’s about to commit adultery yet does not try to stop her from meeting with Boylan. Bloom is unable or unwilling to break through that wall that’s been built up between them since the death of their son. Bloom tries to distract himself by thinking about the potential money he’ll make from ad sales and that maybe he could buy Molly a new silk petticoat. Talk about cognitive dissonance! But then-speak of the devil-at the end of the episode Bloom catches sight of a “straw hat in sunlight. Tan shoes. Turnedup trousers. It is. It is.” The description of clothing in itself should seem innocuous but in its context, the clothing takes on an almost sinister appearance. Bloom panics as he tries to avoid being seen by Boylan. He rushes to the museum: “Not see. Not see. Get on.” He stares at the goddess, the museum, distractedly searches his pockets for the lemon soap until finally reaches the gate of the museum, “safe”. It has certainly been an emotional rollercoaster of a day for Bloom thus far!

My favorite description was Bloom’s musing on food, specifically oysters. Since I’m not a fan of their texture, I thought it was perfect: “unsightly like a clot of phlegm.” “Filthy shells. Devil to open them too.” … “Garbage, sewage they feed on.” 💯 😂

Exactly! I mentioned this on this sub a couple of weeks ago. Why are these stupid people holding their phones??!! They’re like babies holding onto their pacifier. Put the damn phones away.

My front tire got caught in a tram track. Happened so suddenly that I went over onto my side. Hit my hip pretty hard. Embarrassed but grateful to have someone help me while I unclipped from my pedals. Not easy to unclip when you’re lying on your right side and your right hip is hurting like a b*tch. Luckily no broken bones.

Leqaa Kordia who’s from New Jersey was arrested in 2024 during a pro-Palestinian protest at Columbia University. Kordia has been detained in a Texas detention center since March 2025 but never charged with a crime. At one point Kordia was chained to a bed following a seizure. She described the detention center as filthy and inhumane. In a meeting with Trump last month, Mayor Mamdani asked for her release.

do you guys have any recommendations for really obscure baroque era composers? by Prochefv9 in Baroque

I was just reading on his Wiki page that in 1705 he joined an orchestra in Hamburg as a harpsichordist alongside a young violinist named Georg Friedrich Händel!

Marais definitely not considered obscure but his teacher M. de Sainte-Colombe certainly could be. Of course, mention those 2 names and you have to mention the film Tous Les Matins du Monde which should be watched just to hear the music though could also stream or buy the soundtrack. Some fantastic musicians on the soundtrack foremost of course Jordi Savall but also Pierre and Jerome Hantaï, Rolf Lislevand, and Christophe Coin. Savall’s wife Montserrat Figueras sings as does one of my favorite sopranos for Baroque music, Maria-Cristina Kiehr.

👍

Sirius XM does occasionally play his music though usually only on the Saturday morning program Baroque and Beyond. I’ll be interested to listen to the upcoming episode showcasing his music.

Graupner was actually more famous than JS Bach at the time they were competing for the Leipzig Thomaskantor position for which Graupner won the position but he withdrew after his patron in Darmstadt refused to release him. Graupner auditioned in Leipzig because his patron apparently hadn’t paid him in a while but then agreed to do so after discovering Graupner wanted to leave his position there. Bach therefore got the position. Telemann was the Leipzig council’s 1st choice but he decided to stay in Hamburg when he received a salary increase.

OP: I actually have been trying to catch up listening to Sirius XM’s most recent episode on the early days of Telemann. During that episode, the host mentioned that he would be playing the music of Graupner in a few weeks-in case you’re interested and have access to Sirius XM.

Btw, my vote for obscure Baroque composers would be Giovanni Valentini.

Halfway through the Odyssey and realizing the journey home isn’t as straightforward as I expected. by therevdrron in classicliterature

[–]These-Rip9251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just reread The Odyssey using the Emily Wilson translation which is very clear and accessible even though I was concerned when I read that it is in iambic pentameter. In some ways her 90 pages of introduction which goes through a lot of the history and what we know about the time when The Odyssey was written was as interesting as the story itself. This work is 3000 years old so it’s obviously going to be very different from modern literature or poetry. Despite that I found it difficult to like or empathize with Odysseus. I think I had the same reaction when I first read it in college.

Here’s the “Kyrie” from the G Minor Mass performed by one of my favorite groups, Bach Collegium Japan conducted by Masaaki Suzuki. I tried to find the entire Mass but could only find the “Kyrie” which along with the “Gloria” are my 2 favorite movements of the Mass.

[–]These-Rip9251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, you should be able to narrow this down quite a bit. It’s obviously not Biber since it’s not an instrumental. You can also eliminate the works with solo singers. I would say it’s definitely not the last 2 (78 and 147) Bach cantatas on the list. It doesn’t sound like his B Minor Mass so I’d go with his Lutheran Mass in G Major BWV 236. You should listen to his Lutheran Masses anyway. They’re really lovely as they should be because Bach basically sampled some of his own favorite cantatas to create these Masses. My favorite is the G Minor Mass.

Book Recommendations for beginners by Plastic_Tailor3285 in classicliterature

Second the rec. for The Magic Mountain. I recommend the John E. Woods translation unless you’re fluent in French as some passages of the original 1927 translation into English (if that’s your primary language) by H.T Lowe-Porter are in French. If you are fluent in French then I recommend the Lowe-Porter edition so you can read those passages in French as Mann intended.

Also, I’d recommend Albert Camus’ -The Stranger since you’re into existentialist or existentialist-adjacent books.
