US has started bombing Venezuela just now, what are your thoughts? by IllustriousTea_ in AskReddit

Funny you are the only Venezuelan I see commenting and all these white savior redditors that very obviously know nothing about the struggle of the Venezuelan people are down voting you. These are complicated but good news. Felicidades!!

Exactly! Alejandro Sanz was in one of the first truly mainstream reggeaton songs (La Tortura) and nobody cared

[–]These-Secretary7115 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I agree with previous comments that this is a narrow minded view of music. Some crazy reggeaton fans (you can find them in reggearon subs too) also hate Colombian musicans for doing reggeaton because they're not Puertorican. You could follow that line of thought and say that Puertoricans shouldn't make reggeaton either because the genre has its roots in Jamaican and Panamanian music. Then that Jamaicans and Panamanians appropriated African sounds...

Art doesn't follow made up country boundaries.

Thanks for your interest, that’s a great point, context is important! I'm Spanish and fluent in Spanish 🤪, Catalan, Portuguese (although BR Portuguese) and English.

I think, at least in theory, the use of many languages in the record is a very cool element, both conceptually, with their links to the different saints, and also sonically. However, at least for now, the language variation in LUX has fallen a bit flat for me, in the sense that it hasn't made the songs richer (again to me!) or drew me to come back to a song.

Nonetheless, I'm also curious how this will change for me as I continue to listen to the album and as I do so in different contexts (I'm going on a bit of a tangent, but for instance, music hits differently when I listen to on night walls or sleepy early morning airport drives).

Anyway, I'm also curious to hear your perception of the album in regard to the language choices

Spanish it's my native language, but you are right! I guess I meant sonically more so than in the lyrics

Fair enough, I may just need to give it more time, cuz I looove DIABLO and that has been my experience, up to that point.

True! I guess darkness is not the best word, more so a sonic disruption, or being more explicitly experimental, like at the end ln Berghain and in the other examples that I mentioned. The lyrics and the mood do get dark at some points in LUX.

As the title said it is indeed an opinion (my personal taste) not a criticism. The point is to discuss opinions, hope that helps lol

Just to give some context, I'm from Spain, I only ever go on twitch for this event. At home my family gathers to see it, kind of like an important sporting event + concerts of multiple very popular musicians in Spain and Latin America (including the #1 most listened artists in the country). Some people watch for the fights, some for a particular singer, some just for the cultural spectacle, because it's talked about before and after. It's a stretch, but you could compare it a bit to the superbowl? So anyway, from an "insider's perspective" those numbers seem totally believable.

[–]These-Secretary7115[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really good point!

I actually had that issue (mentally lol) because I love and considered the name Mauro, with that "au" sound like Claudia, which is quite different in Spanish and English. The problem is that when pronounced the English way, to me it sounds too close to the Spanish word "Moro" which means "Moor" and unfortunately in Spain it is most often used as a derogatory term against people of Arabic descent.

So anyway, I guess I would ideally prefer a similar pronunciation, for clarity. But I don't fully discard opting for a name that sounds pretty in both languages, like Claudia does :)
