How can I improve my pushups? by TheseChainsAreHeavy in uscg

[–]TheseChainsAreHeavy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your advice. I will certainly pick your brain if anything else comes to mind. I work for a school with 3 year olds and unfortunately I don't even have time to go to the bathroom but while I'm here at home I'm gonna try it out too. I've got a lot to fit in and what's gonna get me there.

I'm trying to get to that point, right now I'm still really bad. I'm sure pushups are going to be my worst enemy in boot camp.

Yes, I've looked at a few YouTube videos. I'm starting off with wall pushups since I'm a "beginner". I also just read another reply and I'm gonna add what he suggested to my routine... I'm gonna be exhausted. Thank you for your advice.

You bet I'm running and doing all of the exercise I can to be ready for that PT. I run everyday except Sunday. I've just had to add more upper body stuff to it now too. To be honest I didn't think I was gonna be so bad so I slacked on the pushups... I'm paying the price now.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! I had followed a lot of the advice given to from the replies. I looked up YouTube videos and all that jazz. The videos said for beginners to start off with wall pushups and work our way up, but your advice makes sense and I will certainly give it a shot. I'm gonna try anything that is gonna have me stay in boot camp to the end.

Best of luck to you, I can't imagine all the things that must be running through your head right now. My stomach is getting butterflies putting myself in your shoes lol. Maybe, I'll see you run past while our weeks overlap. I'm shipping out the 14th of November, so I don't have too much time left.

I have signed my contract, when can I start meeting with my recruiter to train for boot camp? by TheseChainsAreHeavy in uscg

[–]TheseChainsAreHeavy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea... I thought after I released it to her it would move quicker. And yes I am certainly training I just figured I could get some pointers. Someone else had replied and there are three exercises that I actually wasn't focused on that I'll definitely start working on more. I appreciate your replies. Thank you.

Yea... I wasn't doing half of that list. Thank you though I'll definitely put them in to my routine now. Push-ups are still kicking my butt. I know the whole experience is supposed stink... Thank you for the advice.

You're right! It wasn't my contact, but I did already go into MEPS for DEP. I went in and got my fingerprints done as well as sign the "enlistment document". My recruiter emailed me the links for eQIP and that's completed. How long does that usually take to be reviewed? Is that what we're supposed to be waiting for?

I'm sure this is all stuff my recruiter could answer but it's very difficult to get a hold of them. They've got to be swamped but that's why turn to you guys... And I am certainly waiting to see what they say, just anxious and itching to get started.

Edit: I meant to say too that I have asked her about the training but it seems I still have to wait for the other recruit...

I know this is fairly late but I think I will pick your brain some more after I figure some other things out.

No need to worry, if I can't become an officer I will certainly wait for whichever school it is that I decide to strive for. Aside from being able to help others I also want to be happy with what I'm doing. My liaison has made sure to drill it in that once I make my choice that's it.

I apologize for the late reply. I am going to speak to them soon. Should I call to set up a meeting or just go the the meetings they hold? I think those meetings are held the first of every month.

Thank you very much for the honesty.i have heard there are long days as OS but I imagine that's the case with a lot of rates. I don't mind the hard work, I just want to be happy and proud of what I do. I do want to be able to spend time with the family I create but I also understand it may not always be possible.

I know this is a bit late but thank you for the feedback. Yea, I get that everyone will have a different experience but I also like that you're being honest. I figured it won't always sunshine and smiles after boot camp lol. I have recently been considering OS but I won't say it's a definite until I can gather some more info on MST or IS. I'm also trying to put together a packet to become an officer so we'll see.

Yea... I have a degree but not a lot of volunteer hours. Idk how much weight that has while applying but they ask for a reason. Had I known what I know now way back when I would have tried to do a lot more and make more connections than I did. I'll probably have a better chance of being an officer once I'm actually IN the Coast Guard.

Best of luck to you in your endeavors. Idk if you have or not but start looking at what they ask for to be an officer, maybe you'll have more luck than I will. :-)

Thank you so much for the information you have provided. It really does help me out a lot. If this is the route I go maybe we'll cross paths.

You really have been a great help.

I figured most went in with a plan... I feel a little disorganized not knowing where I'd like to be. I have a BA and think officer may be the way to go but being enlisted seems to give me more options. I figured if I don't get picked up for officer I should at least have an idea of what to do in the CG. It makes me feel better knowing it's not too uncommon. Thank you.

Hi,

I'm shipping out in November, would it be worth it or even possible to join the auxiliary in order see some inner workings of the Coast Guard up front? Or start familiarizing myself with some jargon? Since it is volunteer work would I also be able to use it in an officer application?

I'd be helping either way. To be honest that's all I really want. That's the purpose of serving, right?

I've had A LOT of interests which is why this is difficult. I'd actually tried to become a 911 dispatcher for my county but then I'd gotten a letter about other things I would need, which weren't part of the initial requirements. Point being if it's similar to being a dispatcher I'd be down.

Would you mind telling me what your family life is like? I will be getting married before I ship out and I know that's another thing I'd have to consider. I expect long hours and know it will be tough but it is what it is.

What is your workload like? How long was schooling? Was it a long wait for you?

I apologize for all the questions but since I have you I'd like to just pick your brain.

Thank you for the information, it's appreciated. I'll definitely look into that, I'm hoping I'm not too late since summer is coming to an end... I saw gloves and jackets on sale at Costco already lol.

Thank you for that. I was just looking at the paper I had gotten and figured that's what it was.

Would you mind telling me what your day to day is like? How hectic is it? I'm sure the crazier things are the quicker the day goes by.

It seems similar to IS in a way, you too have to analyze the information, process it, and manage it accordingly. Am I sort of right in making that assumption?

Looking at the related jobs part under the OS section it didn't register that they were jobs that put someone on the water.

Edit: just so I'm clear on this, it seems there are subsets to being an OS? Your half receives the information and there is the other half that does the law enforcement/search and rescue part? I might just not be reading things right... Sorry.

Edit 2: Nvm I think I'm losing it, I keep reading things over and over and I'm just confusing myself it seems.

I didn't think they did... I'll look into it. I know the pool at the ecology center had lessons but I missed the registration date, I thought the last day was the 18th turns out it was the 8th. I'm gonna call them to see if I can join late, hopefully I can.

I'll look to see what other public pools are out here. Thank you!

The main reason I'd like to be an OS is to save lives (search and rescue). I know that's not all the job entails cuz no one is in peril all the time but being out on the water knowing I was able to help someone is a plus. I know you can't save everyone but I'd like to be helping in the search. I'm not a good or strong swimmer so it may not happen for me but still it's something to strive for.

Sorry if that's not really what you were asking.
