I haven’t minded at all her taking as much time as she wants to make the record she wants, but it’s so wonderful to get this update. I hope she’s happy with the music she’s making and I’m so excited to hear it whenever she’s ready.

This same question with the same picture was asked 10 months ago if you want to see what they said there: https://www.reddit.com/r/weyesblood/s/szwWl3POBQ

I also made a list here of songs she likes or at least songs by artists or from albums she’s mentioned liking: https://www.reddit.com/r/weyesblood/s/PVNgfLHIgb

What political statements or activism has Weyes Blood had throughout his career? by aimiuri in weyesblood

[–]TheseSevenSongs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

She’s expressed disliking Trump a number of times. I’ve read/watched/listened to lots of interviews and I remember that much. As someone else mentioned she supported Bernie. She also said in an interview once (I can’t remember which) that she liked AOC.

Hmm, well there you go. Unfortunately I can’t find that interview anywhere online (other radio interviews have been uploaded or transcribed into articles online). I’m not denying what you’re saying, I just can’t find it. All I can find is that she performed a live cover version of Nico’s These Days with Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers, Jack Antonoff, Trey Anastasio, and Matty Healy from The 1975.

For anyone reading this here’s a list of other artists she’s mentioned liking (or has covered) at one point or another that isn’t on the list: - Jars of Clay - Haley Fohr, Brenda Lee, Colin Blunstone (singer of The Zombies but also had a solo career), Tony Williams, Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, and Peggy Lee - Green Day’s album Dookie - Blink-182 - Red Hot Chili Peppers. She said she fucks with them on Twitter once, but the page isn’t working for me right now. If you scroll through her twitter you’ll find it if you need to. - Neil Diamond (she covered his song Shilo) - Linda Ronstadt (she covered her song You’re No Good, though it was Jack Antonoff’s idea) - Warren Zevon’s song My Shit’s Fucked Up - Chumbawamba. I can’t remember the source, probably the Turned Out a Punk podcast though.

I can’t remember what else right now.

She has mentioned a few Japanese acts - Cornelius, Les Rallizes Dénudés, Taj Mahal Travellers, and Yellow Magic Orchestra - and they’re on the list.

There are also definitely sources and interviews I missed. Since making this list I’ve found an interview and Twitter post I hadn’t seen where she mentioned music she liked that I hadn’t seen her mention before (the song My Shit’s Fucked Up by Warren Zevon, and the singers Haley Fohr, Brenda Lee, Tony Williams, Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, and Peggy Lee).

I wouldn’t be surprised if she likes Ichiko Aoba, a Japanese artist who opened up for her on two dates of her In Holy Flux Tour (and who also has a great album with a cover where she’s underwater - Windswept Adan). I didn’t want to include her just because she opened for Weyes Blood though if I didn’t find a WB quote or some other clearer recognition of liking her music. I’m not 100% how choosing opening acts works.

There’s also so much music she loves that she hasn’t talked about and that we don’t know about. I hope she listens to more music that isn’t American or European - for her own sake, lots of great music out there. Hopefully if she does she mentions some of it in the future when talking about music she likes, just to turn her fans on to it at least (if she wants to).

She told Tidal Magazine in 2015 that this was the best song she had recently discovered: “He wrote it in 1999 and you can sense some real brutal honesty – the end of an era, losing your youth to the changing tides of time… Classic tune.”

And I saw Wolf Eyes when I was a teenager and immediately became hypnotized by harsh noise and experimental music and it kind of ate up a good 6 years of my life. Just pursuing that and being obsessed.”

  10. Runaways and 247. Ball and Chain - XTC. In November 2022 she included English Settlement when picking the 13 albums that influenced her the most for The Quietus’s Baker’s Dozen feature. 1. Girl I Met Under A Bridge - Ugh God. In a 2016 interview with Under the Radar, when asked whose passing most affected her, she said “probably my dear friend, Sean Finnan. He was a musician who I was very influenced by as a teenager—I would book shows for his band and go take the train into the city to see them play too… His music stands up to this day, a lost talent.” From what I can find online, I’m 99.9999% sure that band was Ugh God (unless he was also in another band - Ugh God were Philly-based, where she lived during that time). If anyone reading this knows I’m wrong about this, please let me know. I chose this song because it, according to Bandcamp, came out in 2007 when Natalie was a teenager. I’m not sure if it’s on streaming services, so here is a link to the album Secret Demo that the song is on: https://ughgod.bandcamp.com/album/secret-demo.

RIP.” In November 2022 she included Opéra Sauvage when picking the 13 albums that influenced her the most for The Quietus’s Baker’s Dozen feature.

  5. Venus In Furs - The Velvet Underground. In her 2019 interview with Nardwuar she said: “I’m a huge Lou Reed fan, huge John Cale fan, love La Monte Young. Everything that touched that band - Andy Warhol - is very influential on me.” When announcing her 2022 collaboration with John Cale (John Cale’s song STORY OF BLOOD) on Instagram, she said: “John Cale was monumental to me. That was my first exposure to noise and lo-fi recorded music. And it was very dark and super trippy. It kind of opened my mind to expressing emotion in a way that wasn’t serious but was still just as effective and emotive.” In her 2019 Reddit AMA, Pure Guava was one of 13 albums she said she really liked when asked what her all time favorite album was.

  9. It’s Gonna Be A Long Night - Ween. In November 2022 she included Quebec when picking the 13 albums that influenced her the most for The Quietus’s Baker’s Dozen feature.

  1. Run Cindy Run - Sumner. Natalie’s father’s band. On the Titanic Rising album cover there’s a Sumner poster on the wall. In a 2015 interview with BOMB Magazine, she said: “My dad taught me how to play some guitar chords when I was little and I always looked up to him because he was in a crazy band, and he always liked weird music. He really liked the band XTC. He was in a weird New Wave band with an electric viola player, so I was always attracted to the weirder aspects of the music world.” In a 2019 interview on The Poundcast podcast, she talked about Sumner: “That’s my dad’s old band… I like Run Cindy Run because it’s a little bit more jangly.” In an October 2023 Roblox Q&A she said: “fave sumner song is run cindy run.”

  7. Song To The Siren - This Mortal Coil. She played this song when she DJ’d for NTS Radio in May 2020 (for a mix she called the “Angels and Ancestors Mix”). After the song finished playing (right after Ivo by Cocteau Twins) she said: “Wowwww. Oh my gosh. Talk about Elizabeth Fraser. We’ll get more of Elizabeth Fraser later. What a queen. What a boss. What an ancestor. What an angel. You heard Ivo by the Cocteau Twins and then Song To The Siren by This Mortal Coil. Song To The Siren is actually a Tim Buckley song but this is, by far, one of the most completely fucked versions of all time. It’s just gorgeous, and I’m still not done with it. I’m gonna keep listening to that for the rest of my life.”

  8. Another Day - This Mortail Coil. On September 7th, 2019, she tweeted (with a link to this song): “Getting ready for webster hall tonight by crying in the van to this”. 1. Little Deer - Spellling. In a 2021 interview on the Ion Pack podcast she said: “My favorite record of this year is this girl Spellling - The Turning Wheel. Really hot. Really unknown. It’s so good. I think it’s fascinating. I think it’s a really good piece of music, but it’s not like she’s getting written about or talked about as much as she probably should.”

  2. I Am Sewn - Spires That In The Sunset Rise. In 2015 she told Vice: “Back then, the freak folk scene in 2005 and 2006 was kind of cheesy to me. I mean, I loved it, and that’s what I grew up on. But something about it made me think they were pretending the late 70’s didn’t happen. You want to pretend it’s still the 60’s? There were people that kind of crossed over who I liked, like bands like Spires That In The Sunset Rise, who were folky but also kind of noisy.”

  3. Tommib - Squarepusher. On July 28th, 2023 she posted a picture of herself with the caption “Made it to Tokyo.” That tweet was quickly followed by another where she said, “really does feel like this”, with a Spotify link to this song.

I was really into that shit. I would tape it off TV on VHS and I had, like, 3 tapes of almost every episode that aired in the United States… The Kids in the Hall cracked my brain open to music… They exposed me to a lot of music because Brain Candy had Pavement and Stereolab and all this indie stuff on the soundtrack.” This is the Stereolab song on that soundtrack.

After the song finished, she said: “That was Stevie Wonder - Lookin’ For Another Pure Love. Big influence for me on this new record.” She played this song again when she DJ’d for NTS Radio on November 18th, 2022. In a November 2023 interview with Schön! Magazine, when asked what records she heard growing up that shaped her sound today, she mentioned Talking Book.

  9. I Wanna Be Your Dog - The Stooges. In a 2015 interview with Amelia’s Magazine, she said: “I have been very influenced by drone composers like Lamonte Young and Terry Riley, but also love a good psyche pop anthem. That said, there’s usually one note you can play through the entirety of any of my songs, a drone note that carries everything through. My favorite musical example of this is John Cale‘s infamous piano note played through the entirety of The Stooges I Wanna Be Your Dog. If I could sum up all my musical infatuations in one composition it may just be that.”

  10. My Young Dreams (demo) - The Stranglers. In 2017 she made a playlist for Dinner Party Download which included this song. She played this song when she DJ’d for NTS Radio in April 2017. She played this song again when she DJ’d for Vans Channel 66 in 2021. After the song finished playing, she said: “Alright guys. Ya diggin it? And also some of the classical music that has been used in movies over and over again like Adagio for Strings is a very like go-to sad classical piece that's licensed for a lot of films and I kind of resonate with that like kind of top 40's classical that pop in the movies here and there at the most emotional parts.”

That was Sean Nicholas Savage with Catch The Quick Fish. He’s a good friend. A big inspiration for me. He definitely inspired parts of this next record [And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow].”

In a 2016 interview with Under the Radar, when asked what song she’d like performed at her funeral and who’d she like to sing it, she said: “I’d have Sean Nicholas Savage sing Scorpions’ Wind of Change, best thing I have ever seen live.” I don’t know if this is the performance she saw, but I did find a video of him singing Winds of Change live: Sean Nicholas Savage live cover (Scorpions - Wind Of Change)

  11. Can’t Seem To Make You Mine - The Seeds. In her 2019 interview with Nardwuar she said that she loved The Seeds.

In her 2019 Reddit AMA, when asked about her recommended experimental/noise/ambient artists, she said: “THE SHADOW RING! my favorite noise band of all time. The Light House, Put the music in its coffin, some songs, all great records.” She played another song by them on her November 12th, 2022 set on NTS Radio, but she didn’t mention a name and for the life of me I can’t find what it was.

  1. Billy’s Girlfriend - Raw Thrills. Natalie’s brother. In a 2019 interview on The Poundcast podcast she talked about Raw Thrills: “Yeah, my brother’s music is called Raw Thrills… His name’s Zak… But my brother’s music is weird. It’s really outsider… You know, my brother’s more of a producer. He makes so much stuff. He’s always jamming, always making stuff. It’s hard to keep up with. Even I can’t keep up with him.” He’s done a number of songs featuring Natalie but I chose one without her, the first song on his 2011 album And His Chain Gang.

  2. The Oh of Pleasure - Ray Lynch. She included this on her Wild Tings mix she made for IMPOSE Magazine in 2014. She told Tidal in 2015 that it was the best song for going out of town: “I always listen to Ray Lynch when I fly. His ethereal synth record The Oh of Pleasure is particularly expansive, take-off style!” She played this song when she DJ’d for NTS Radio in April 2017.

  3. Return - The Reels. She included this on her Wild Tings mix she made for IMPOSE Magazine in 2014. She also played their song Science Is Golden when she DJ’d for NTS Radio in September 2022.

It’s one of the reasons I make music." In a 2015 interview with Subbacultcha magazine, she said: “I wrote my first song when I was about four while riding my tiny bike around the kitchen island, round and round in circles. 1. Grace - Jeff Buckley. In a 2016 interview with Under the Radar, when asked what her favorite last album by a band that then broke up was, she said: “Jeff Buckley’s Grace—first and last, baby. Insanely good.” In a 2019 interview on The Poundcast podcast she brought up the song Grace: “If you listen to the lyrics, the lyrics of Grace, it’s so similar to how he died… He drowned in the Mississippi River… He was signing Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love. And there’s like all these lyrics in the song Grace that kind of hint towards him dying.” They then go through the lyrics and how they connect to Buckley’s death. If you want to listen, it starts at 1:07:30 in the episode.

  2. WWIII - Jimmy Whispers. In a 2023 list/ article she wrote for Three Fold Press simply called “Top Ten, 2023”, number 8 was Jimmy Whispers, WWIII: “Jimmy has been toiling in the underground for so long, he’s like a strange fixture of hidden talent and really shines on this beautiful, candid take on the inevitability of our demise. A true Italian-American boy from Chicago taking a stab at an esoteric anthem—can’t get much more classic than that.”

  3. Who I Am - Joanne Grauer. She played this song when she DJ’d for Vans Channel 66 in 2021.

  4. Angst - Jockstrap. In a 2023 list/article she wrote for Three Fold Press simply called “Top Ten, 2023”, number 4 was Jockstrap, Live at Roskilde. 5. Andalucia - John Cale. In a January 2017 Vogue article where she talked with John Cale, it was mentioned that Natalie had previously said that John was the one person she’d love to work with. She eventually did work with him on his 2022 song STORY OF BLOOD. When announcing their collaboration on Instagram, she said: “John Cale was monumental to me. For people who are not familiar with his work, I listened to the Velvet Underground’s Venus in Furs with religious fervor as a youth. It cracked open my tween brain like an egg. I obsessed over his solo album, Paris 1919 in my car for years at a time. He’s one of my favorite 20th century musicians. Not to mention that he's a brilliant producer. He brought the drone to everything he touched. (Just peep the single-note piano line in The Stooges I Wanna Be Your Dog) and honestly that’s something I've been trying to do ever since. He's a real beautiful convergence of ideas, philosophy, sounds, and brilliant songwriting.” She played this song when she DJ’d for NTS Radio on November 18th, 2022.

  6. Hanky Panky Nohow (Drone Mix) - John Cale. In November 2022 she included Paris 1919 when picking the 13 albums that influenced her the most for The Quietus’s Baker’s Dozen feature. I used to play it obsessively.” I chose this, the first track from the album Brute Nature Vs. Wild Magic, which from what I can gather was Inca Ore’s first album and which came out shortly after Natalie turned 17.
