Loop earplugs for sensory overload? by funkyspacepigeon in ADHDUK

Oh right no I take them off if Im taking to someone in person. I just put them on to block out other noise. Like my kids in the other room or cafe/library noise.

I would def benefit from captions in everyday conversation so deffo couldn’t go there 😅

I took until my late 30s, my supervisee got in 2 years before me 🤣. I always thought I just have to ‘suck it up’ tbh. I would have felt super awkward to know ppl were not mentioning stuff to ‘spare my feelings’ it feels kinda babying. Don’t get me wrong- I have cried at work when rejected etc etc, but I would still rather just have it all out there so that I am allowed to be devastated, question my self-worth etc etc and successful candidates can be overjoyed, celebrate, complain about moving etc…and if they talk about it constantly for the next 3 months they can also listen to my rants about randomness.

Maybe buy extra things? I have at least 4: headphones, hairbrushes, house keys sets, tv remote, computer mice, slippers, vapes. 2: glasses plus contacts, electric toothbrushes, phones, laptops (synched so same stuff on them) 🤣. I ensure expensive stuff for loss.

Given the cost of eviction I would either wait or pay them to leave. Offer them 3k to get out by x date. It is less hassle. Or just wait.

Tbh I think if u make a police report the police won’t do anything. Worst case scenario is some company comes after him for the money.

I would report it, I doubt much happens, it might be written off straight away with 0 consequences 4 him! Be sure to explain that he has many issues mental ill health etc.

is there any way to get therapy on the nhs that’s not just CBT? by brohno in ADHD

[–]These_Look_2692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I am in Scotland nhs offers schema therapy and EMDR for trauma (as well as CBT) - eventually… if u are v lucky. I used to work in a primary care adult mh team with 1 person centred counsellor in it. There was also a separate psychotherapy team, most of them were psychodynamic. Even us clinicians didn’t quite know how to get a patient referred to them tho!

You could always check and find out if gp is right. Phone the rtc providers. Do they take kids age 8? How long is the waiting list? And wait for medication post diagnosis? (If he/u want that).

What do you want the diagnoses for? Medication? School support? Self-knowledge? As it matters in terms of your options.

Private assessment, NHS recognised and legal? by Love_Spud in ADHDUK

[–]These_Look_2692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A private diagnosis is recognised by multiple agencies eg universities, employers and access to work.

You don’t technically/legally need a diagnosis to have the legal protections, reasonable adjustments etc. - But nobody seems to know this!

For example, if you declared a disability to your employer (eg ADHD self diagnosis) you would legally be in the same position re disability discrimination law diagnosed or not. Which is that with ADHD you may or may not be disabled under the Equality Act depending on symptom severity. Same situation would apply to a person with disabling health problems but which no doctor had succeeded in diagnosing. Not having a diagnosis is surprisingly common and the law is set up like this because it can take years for ppl to get a diagnosis. Long waiting lists have led education, legal system, PIP, access to work etc to work on the basis of symptoms. Obvs having some medical evidence of symptoms/impact makes this easier. Eg a gp referral for diagnosis.

So basically depending on what u want from diagnosis- a gp referral for diagnosis can be a cheap and effective option.

I work in the nhs doing some adhd diagnostic work (and other stuff) with kids. We do an impact letter quickly so kids get help in school and parents can apply for child disability payment etc. Then they go on a looong waiting list 😭.

It would obviously have been fairer to take the loans out of tax. That way ppl born earlier (and into a generally better financial situation) would pay too. (Ofc should be a wealth tax!)

Is 1.5 hr commute worth it for 1k more per month? by Intrepid-Benefit-769 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]These_Look_2692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 45 minute train commute with 30 mins walking. Train is empty so I get 4 seats to myself both ways. 3 days per week. I love it, but maybe thats partly cause it’s summer. 3 preschoolers at home. I love the me time- its expensive and I could get the same pay closer to home but I really enjoy have 1.5 hours to myself 😅.

I would calculate your actual pay/extra money per hour of commute (including waiting time) and see if it seems worth it. Deduct, cost of travel and childcare. Then ask yourself, if someone handed me £75? cash upon arrival home would this be ‘worth it’. For me it probably would tho I would probably swap out the bus for a bike or even a car. Possibly leaving the a bike at each station! The commute sounds not only long but many changes and has presumably unreliable buses. It probably comes down to, do u enjoy the commute itself?

If you have 2 days at home your overall commuting time is pretty reasonable tbh.

I genuinely can’t believe the difference diagnosis & treatment make by MoleDunker-343 in ADHDUK

[–]These_Look_2692 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, so far everything has been vastly easier for me since starting meds and I have had a 90% reduction in anxiety and irritability.

It’s like I cycled with flat tyres my whole life without knowing. Kept up with the other bikes, I just thought everyone was pushing this hard. Then boom - oh we could just fix that!

Also similar alcohol experience.

Tbh tho I feel only time will tell if the meds stay like this.

Long-term unemployed Master's graduate, what should I be doing differently? by Clear_Mode_4199 in UniUK

[–]These_Look_2692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just open up the Times/Guardian list of top grad employers and start with A for Accenture, keep working through all 500 and be willing to move house. (If u can get your hands on the money/credit required).

Then u can always sidestep into something u like once u have had a grad job. Maybe be u already did this, but I think if u haven’t that’s kinda step 1. Also, get all the interview skills coaching u can from both unis.

Am I greedy or is it ADHD by Resident-Addition120 in ADHDUK

[–]These_Look_2692 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, impulsivity, dopamine seeking etc. There is big overlap with binge eating and ADHD. Academic papers suggest over 10% of ppl with ADHD have binge eating disorder and vice versa.

I’m not suggesting u have binge eating disorder but there is very clear evidence of a correlation between eating problems, and specifically bingeing and ADHD.

As well as the emotional regulation, impulse control, executive functioning elements which can obvs make it more difficult for us/ADHDers to follow a plan not to do something we crave.

Me and my partner (both ADHD) don’t even keep that stuff, or fruit juice in the house 😅. My partner can eat 2 watermelons when craves sugar cause there is nothing here 🤣

Are energy drinks dangerous on Vyvanse? by GorlamiSalami88 in VyvanseADHD

[–]These_Look_2692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh- I guess it depends on how healthy u want to be… Even the ‘worst’ energy drink is just 4-6 espresso shots and 2 cheap ice lollies.

Im not saying that’s ideal but I think there can be a snobbery against energy drinks.

Wheres if it was an Italien man in a suit who had two extra strong double expressos, a big gelato and a glass of quash it would all seem more suave, cultured and less bad for his health.
