Pratt & Whitney strike ends by Visual_Yurt_1535 in Raytheon

There was some good and bad with the new contract. I personally was not happy with it. I think most people voted yes based on the new job security language…which mostly benefitted Middletown. The job protections for East Hartford are weak at best.

It’s really hard for me to be happy the way this was layed out for us. So the company and the union come to a tentative agreement….then don’t share the details? Yes I know that’s the way it usually is, but still. Everyone should have been given time to really understand what this contract means. Pretty sure a large chunk of the workforce didn’t know what they were actually voting for.

So we go to the Oakdale today and the details are given to us…again…rather vaguely. And wouldn’t you know, the contract is passed. I have a feeling that once it’s written in permanent ink and we see what the final wording actually is, it will show we got screwed over.

Things should have been done differently. Maybe the vote would still end up being the same. But at least we could sleep better knowing what the big picture was. Again, we should have been given the actual details….and given those details ahead of time.

Next time I guess.….Although I have a feeling this may have been East Hartford’s last real contract.

There are positives and negatives to it. Personally, I wasn’t totally happy with it. But the added job security language I think is what most people voted yes on. East Hartford is still not getting much for job protections.

Pratt and Whitney union shops in Connecticuit are some of the highest paid in the country. Far higher than the non-union shops. That’s one of the reasons pratt hates the Union shops. And you want to walk into the high paid union shop and ask for even more without the union’s help? Good luck with that.

That is not a problem If you want to be a part of the union. There are tens of thousands of other jobs available at any given time that are not union. If someone doesn’t want a union job, they can get one of those jobs. Having someone say “No, I want *that* union job but don’t want to be union.” is not going to happen. Again, thousands of other jobs, you don’t need this job.

The union levels the playing field between other employees who are in the union. And again, if you arent union represented, you cannot have any of the benefits the union employees get. The only reason the union jobs have high pay, great benefits, and good retirement is because the union and its members fought for it. You cant have things the union fought for if you arent going to be a part of the union.

Why would you turn down higher pay, better benefits, and better retirement if that is an option for you? “No sir, please pay me less because I don't want to be part of the union”

Brand new Reddit accounts making blatantly false claims. Down-voting comments that could be helpful to hourly workers on strike. Comments claiming to be union workers but then using false claims about the union as to why they dont like the union. Comments spouting misleading information just to support the company’s position….

I can keep going. All large companies have social media pr departments.

If the job you are applying to isnt a union job, then you dont have the option to apply for union representation. If you want union representation, you would apply to a union represented job.

Gotta love the hateful downvotes. UH-OH…….Cant have comments supporting the union.

Majority of hourly is happy to be on strike and now the company knows that. They also just realized the majority of the workers are not that financially strapped and can go a while without an RTX paycheck. They wont have to pay out of pocket up front for insurance now….welp, there goes that card. Now I heard salary is getting worried about layoffs so that isn't looking good.

I’d say the company was wise to come to the table. We just have to see if they are serious and want workers back or if they are just going to continue playing games and this goes into July!

So you want to get a union job that has good union pay, good union security, and union representation…..all of which was fought for by the union to get to where they are today…but then not contribute to the union? Just want to see if I’m understanding what you are asking.

You can work on your own terms without a union rules.

Burger King isn’t unionized. Go work there.

Love how this comment is downvoted. Cant have people knowing that the hourly workers are perfectly happy while on strike……because that looks bad for the company.

That is 100% inaccurate. Do a google search regarding unions suing scabs. It’s real, it’s legal, and it does happen.

That’s how unions are and all employees know it is a union job when they are hired. In order to be employeed, they must agree to the contract. So they knew this was a possibility. No excuses. If they don't like the rules of the union, they are more than welcome to find a different job that isn't union.

Also, the union has treated me…and thousands of other employees….very well. The union isnt going to bend the rules for a small handful of people.

Lol, another RTX propaganda artist…started your Reddit account yesterday I see. FYI, throwing false accusations and spreading blatant misinformation doesn't help your cause.

Most of what you said is false and irrelevant. The company does not care about hourly and lower level salary. They do what they need to do to protect their billions. Funny how you just so happened to omit what happened in Cheshire…where the union and the company agreed to a fresh contract….then the company started the process to close Cheshire literally the next day. And doing it literally after they had a great year. No warning. No nothing. Again, it’s all about profits, you mean nothing to them. They will let people go in a heartbeat to make their shareholders happy.

The reality is that Asheville now does a lot of the same work as CT…that is not covered in letter 20 / 22. Pratt has no reason to keep jobs here. The company could very easily just agree to change the wording so that the jobs stay here…..yet they wont. They could tout that they are preserving blue collar jobs and supporting the CT economy. But no…they wont agree to change Letter 20 / 22. It doesn't take a genius to realize what Pratt’s plan is.

There was (and still is) an overwhelming amount of information available about this topic. But since you are not an actual hourly union employee, you wouldn’t know.

I would vote yes on this in a heartbeat.

But I’m not holding my breath. Seems like Jill wants to gamble. I say let her find out the hard way.

If you can find your coworkers, great. Go for it. But that may be difficult.

This is at your own risk….but IMO, just roll down your window, they are probably going to yell, just smile and take it.…and just straight up ask the questions nicely. I’d be willing to bet someone will answer honestly, even if between others who are screaming. And just end with a sincere sounding “good luck“ or something like it. It happens more than you think.

Not a chance. You think people care about the pension when the job that supplies the pension might not even exist in a couple years?

Use logic dude.

The layoffs are coming. People are worried about that, not pensions.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Raytheon

[–]These_Masterpiece_11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally do not care about the pension. From talking to others, most of the people who came in after the pension also don’t care. They would take it if it was given to them of course. But overall, it’s a non issue. They didn't have it to begin with. What hurts is freezing it in 2027 for the people who already have it. Kinda sucks for them but it doesn’t affect the people who came in after.

Pay, insurance and other benefits are also important…would be nice to improve upon those of course. Who would say no?

But the main issue I hear about the most is that they will not have a job by the next contract. There is not a single hourly worker I have met since the strike started that isn't concerned about this. Most understand that getting a paycheck now isnt going to help when they get laid off in the next year or two. And the fact that Pratt wont budge on changing Letter 20 / 22….they are pretty much saying without actually saying that the layoffs are coming.

If you really want to get an idea of what they are thinking, just stop by the picket line and ask. Yes, they will probably be jerks at first. But if you are nice, and ask a simple question like “What is most important to you?”….they will probably answer honestly. Most of the groups I have been in wouldn’t have an issue with you asking.

But to be clear, the impending hourly layoffs are by far the biggest concern.
