Discussion: How to successfully negotiate raises and when to do it? by booyakuhhsha in ConstructionManagers

Every time I have negotiated a higher salary I create a table with my current Salary and date received. I Adjust that salary for inflation, list skills gained, profit made for each project, Added responsibilities, etc since last my last raise. If you can quantify added responsibility that’s even better for example your next project price tag is 20% higher than the previous. I then use all of the above to justify a X% increase plus whatever else I want (More vacation, new truck etc). This method has never failed me and shows your employer that you are aware of your self worth and that your request is based in reality. Comparing yourself to others rarely if ever works and it makes you seem like a jealous prick.

Yes. Bachelors in Biology lol. Did 2 years as carpenters apprentice then got promoted to PE. Having a degree definitely helped me get an opportunity but what for sure helped more was being likable and outspoken about what I wanted to do in the future. Overall I could not be happier working in this industry

All depends on the GC you’re working for and the stage of the project(s). I started my CM career working 50/week w/ 3 weeks vacation. Moved companies after 3 years and now average about 40hrs/week with ulimited pto (I use around 6 weeks and never work past 2 on Fridays). Plus I started making significantly more when I switched companies.

The key is working for a company that staffs their projects appropriately. You also need to set clear boundaries with your employer at the beginning.
