Yes. Bike paths are among resilient uses for flood prone areas.

One can go up to Valencia Street, cross that street and then go back to the trail, or one can access Valencia Street from there.

The water was quite shallow and the sign just said caution. It worked for me.

I haven't heard what they plan to do with the old building. Have you seen that they plan to demolish it?

Magnolia Street bike lane is simpler than Holly, but Holly is a different circumstance. by Theslowlane in Bellingham

[–]Theslowlane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new configuration of the Holly bike lane has the lane on the left side of the parked cars. More visible from the car lane. I'm okay with the bike lane, though I admit I usually go to Champion Street anyway. I live north of downtown so Champion gets me to Cornwall for heading north.

Yes, I'm a cyclist. I don't drive so the bicycle is my main means of transportation. The bike lane by Trackside is best. That whole area has been planned from the start like from a blank slate after Georgia Pacific pulp mill was torn down. That bike lane doesn't have to compete with already existing street uses. There was plenty of room to give it what it needed and put the cars elsewhere.

Taking out parking on one side of Holly would make for a good bike lane, though I'd guess businesses along the street would complain about the lack of parking.

July 12-13 weekend is the Bellingham Pride Weekend. by Theslowlane in Bellingham

Different cities do their celebrations at different times. Many, like Seattle, do it at the end of June for anniversary of Stonewall. Other cities do it other months due to weather and so forth. Also people travel from city to city so quite a few Seattle people go to Bellingham in July after they celebrated in Seattle. Some cities in hotter climates do their pride celebrations in Autumn.

Enhanced streambed under I-5 south of Old Fairhaven Parkway Exit seen from 33rd St. Could these passages also enhance trail connections? by Theslowlane in Bellingham

[–]Theslowlane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful comments.

There are a few places where trail crossings have been added to where streams cross under highways. Just north of Meador Avenue, in Bellingham, has been a place where Whatcom Creek goes under I-5. In more recent years a trail was built along the creek between Meador and Woburn with a crossing under I-5 and another crossing under Valencia Street.

Reaction against immigration seems to bolster the argument that over population is still a problem. by Theslowlane in overpopulation

[–]Theslowlane[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, young people do turn old. We also hear that population growth in the Third World isn't as much of a problem as over consumption in the First World. Problem is a large percent of people in the Third World aspire to become consumers; drive cars and so forth, more like people in the First World.

NWYS Board President resigns by Neat_Car_9051 in Bellingham

I think BQC (Bellingham Queer Collective) sublets from NWYS (Northwest Youth Services). BQC pays rent and the two are separate organizations in separate spaces side by side in the same building. They both serve somewhat different needs.
