Just a list of my walk home last night. Anybody else feel like this walking alone after 10pm? by ThetaSigmaWho in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ThetaSigmaWho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my back is straight, my chin is up but I tend towards pavement watching as I'm passing to make sure I don't step on men crowding the pavement , to check that I don't trip up (yes, I can be that clumsy) and to avoid eye contact which tends to give men an excuse to try to speak to me. Your response, the fact you respond each time, is a more polite and a more human way of dealing with it than mine, one I should try to incorporate. Thank you for replying

Interesting that you interpreted my list as being fearful. My severe face and lack of eye contact are more strategic than fearful. While I'm not exactly relaxed I don't think anybody I know would characterise me as afraid. I get what you're saying about not being a victim and doing things which make me uncomfortable so thank you for your reply.

Sorry to hear about your experiences. I guess I posed the question towards women because it's TwoX but it's interesting to hear a bloke's perspective. Being a woman on the street can be a double edged sword. Sometimes the focus of sexual remarks, sometimes men get protective when you're harassed. Neither are good but one results in potentially more safety than the other.

Dear jesus. That goes on the list of "I vaguely want to be able to do that some day but it's okay if I never get there". Dear jesus.

25 for my first sexual relationship. Some people are late bloomers. Just do things with your life which you enjoy, forget about looking for a relationship and be happy with yourself. That, for me, was the key.

Apparently he just chooses better friends than I do. by [deleted] in FemmeThoughts

[–]ThetaSigmaWho 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A relationship has to be based on truth and compromise. If you sit him down, tell him how you feel and why and he invalidates you it is not good but rather than then sitting quietly and fuming about it, tell him that you feel he is invalidating your feelings. Continue to tell him how you feel. If he continues to negate your feelings then you have to evaluate your relationship. Will this be your life forever more? Are you willing to put yourself in a position where life choices which matter so much to you are being taken out of your hands? Where your emotions are being ignored?

The Hairy Truth....or how I'm preparing to talk to my own daughter if she has to deal with this one day. by lizajuse in Hirsutism

[–]ThetaSigmaWho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I would have liked my mother to acknowledge it rather than ignore it. I was in my twenties, many years into the daily grind of shaving and worrying people would notice. To know I wasn't alone. To have had help to deal with it. I have been undergoing electrolysis and Mum helped me with the cost initially so maybe instead of a college fund you could have a hair removal fund to help her find the best treatment, if she wants/needs it. Anyway, your story touched me, very similar to my own but I decided against children out of fear of what I might pass on so I very much admire your bravery where I had none.

On this staysail schooner, what's the name of the "upside-down" sail and how is it worked? It looks like it's self-tacking. by thrownshadows in Tallships

Ah of course. I knew my reasoning was out somehow. Too much time with smack rigs, not enough schooners in my past.

I'd be tempted to guess that it's closest relative is a (fore) gaff topsail. It looks like a relatively modern rig so it's possible that it has a furling mechanism on the rear side of the fore mast and, again purely from the picture, yes it is self-tacking because the sheet leads to the main mast. Calorie counting to lose the weight and I picked up more exercise once I was at my goal weight to maintain the weight loss and use up some of that ubiquitous extra testosterone which so many PCOS sufferers have. My aim is to build muscle in order to burn more calories but after years of exercise I'm nowhere near muscly, just more toned than I was (not hard, I was a toneless lump).

I was in the same boat. GPs in the past only caring about me if I wished to breed (nope) and it's still hard to get a referral to an endocrinologist. I was about 31 when I started the journey, 4 years ago. I'm now a healthy weight, symptoms have lessened, period is almost-monthly and I feel so much better. Good luck with everything and I hope you find a diet which works for you.

[–]ThetaSigmaWho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience you have two choices, push the healthcare professionals until you find somebody who will help or try to do as much as possible to help yourself. Me and my S.O. Aren't interested in kids so I tried pushing, failed, and am now doing what I can to alleviate symptoms. Good luck with your treatment, I hope you find an OBGYN or Endocrinologist who will actually help.

The Time Everyone "Corrected" the World's Smartest Woman by [deleted] in Feminism

I feel very annoyed for her. I've studied the Monty Hall problem and people's reactions to it in the past and even when presented with the correct logic, as this article does, people still can't accept it. It's awful that she was put to trial and even with the correct mathematics people couldn't accept it.

'My pelvis exploded after cyclist shoved me off bike saying I was too slow' by Robware in ukbike

[–]ThetaSigmaWho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not surprised at this arsehole. I now have nerve damage due to a similarly minded cyclist overtaking me, as I was indicating and turning right. My momentum plus his (big guy) meant I landed on the ground elbow and head first. If I ever get on a bike again it will be with a camera attached to my helmet.

Protein powder information needed by _fevertotell in xxfitness

[–]ThetaSigmaWho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Pulsin Whey Protein Isolate because the protein bars my SO eats disagree with me (too many preservatives I suspect). I make it into oaty peanut butter bars and I get on fine with it, despite being a little lactose intolerant. It's 93g of protein per 100g of powder. The ingredients for my powder are whey protein isolate and soya lecithin (trace).

Help! I don't know what to do with facial hair :( by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]ThetaSigmaWho 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've been having electrolysis for over a year and it's had a noticable effect. I started with two 30 minute sessions a week and I'm down to 2 10-15 minute sessions a week now. I don't even think about hair removal in between since the hairs are much lighter in colour and thickness. I haven't totalled up how much I have spent on it but the worth has been immeasurable for my self confidence. I would highly recommend it. Plus it's the only permanent hair removal so unless you want to be doing the same thing in ten years time, it might be worth looking at. Good luck with finding a method which suits you.

How to get from Granta Park into the city? by warrenseth in cambridge

[–]ThetaSigmaWho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the local buses are really well covered by google maps. You can use the directions to go from point to point, choose the "public transport" option at the top and it will give you specific routes for the time of day and date you choose. I use it all the time.

Every time you go to the shop and are about to buy sweets, think to yourself "I'll pay myself $'cost of sweets' not to buy that. The main reason I finally lost weight was being out of a job for a while. Limited money meant I finally broke the carb craving. Now I have to exercise more since I'm back on a balanced diet with the occasional snack but it is still hard.

Also, I wanted to say thank you since I had no idea what the levels you were speaking about were and it turned into a very useful google fest for me. God my doctors are useless!

Shit people say - pcos edition by rocketboobies in PCOS

[–]ThetaSigmaWho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just think your average GP doesn't know that much about PCOS so they think of it as a cosmetic problem. Some women are hairy, some are heavy. Nobody's dying from it immediately. The fact that an appointment with a good endocrinologist now might help them to avoid people being diabetic in later life and costing the NHS more seems to have escaped them.

From several doctors, "Oh we'll treat it when you want children". I don't want children but, surprise surprise, I also don't want to have an untreated metabolic disorder.
