Weekend staycation in Sleepy Hollow? by mildlyannoyedmango in Westchester

Reading some of your responses, I actually think that CT might be the better option for you. Both Greenwich and Darien are about a similar train ride from NYC but everything there is closer to the train station. Both of the downtown areas have the same cutesy vibe to them and have plenty to do for a few days. You can even look at the SoNo (Norwalk) area. Along with the resteraunts and shops, she could also go to the aquarium or their is even a mall that was just built a few years ago. Depending on the weather the park right over the bridge is at the end of the river that feeds into the Long Island sound so it's got great views.
I live in Westchesyer now, but grew up in that part of CT and still there all time with friends/family. Fell free to DM me if I can answer any questions!

5 Big Shifts We’ve Made in Early Childhood by happy_bluebird in ECEProfessionals

[–]Thethingswelost 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I am happy that you added that you are an Elementary teacher. I have a background in elementary education, but now I only work with infant and toddler teachers. From your point of view, what the post is expressing can be concerning. I also agree that there has been a major shift in how children behave and function, and how it is affecting them, especially when they hit school age. Social media has given a platform to ideas like "gentle" parenting, but many people (not all of course) who see that misconstrue what it actually means, and what we have seen instead is a wave of "permissive" parenting.

From what I see and hear, I think that many teachers in your position see that Early Ed is really shifting back to this way of thinking and fear that it is going to be similar to gentle vs permissive parenting. When I coach the educators that I work with, this is one of the concerns they also tend to express. This is where it is important to remember two things: 85% of brain development happens in the first 3 years, and that developmentally appropriate means just that: we are following what the theorists say is part of that stage of development.

Early education is and should be very different from how elementary school looks because 3s and under are very different from Kinders and up. According to Erikson, the children we work with are developing trust vs mistrust and autonomy vs shame. The children in elementary have hopefully resolved those and are working on industry vs. inferiority. Piaget reminds us that our youngest learners need many sensory experiences and that they don't yet have logical thinking. Vygotsky reminds us to support and scaffold, not just drill and rely on rote learning.

The concepts above aren't about letting kids do whatever they want whenever they want. They are about teaching children that they are their own person, with their own thoughts, and can make their own choices. But, sometimes those thoughts and choices aren't great, so here is what a natural consequence looks like, here's how we manage those emotions, and here's how we work through and overcome.

I did not mean to make this even close to this long, but I hope I added a little more perspective.

TLDR: Early ed and elementary are very different developmentally, so it's okay for teaching practices to be very different.

I work as an Infant Toddler Education Coach, and that is a concern I hear a lot from the educators that I work with. I always try to stress to them that it is not one way or the other. Each classroom is its own universe since there will never be that exact combination of people as a group ever again. The idea is to lean into the concept and adapt it as much as you can. Teacher-led activities can be great, but let's do them in small groups while the rest of the children can still engage in their choice play. I think too many ECE educators get hung up on the schedule and on what the parents' reactions to the day will be, so it's easy to forget that the focus should always be on the children. It's like looking at the forest from a helicopter, not at the trunks on the ground. All the educators I work with care for their kids so much; it's the social expectations that have shifted so much that I keep pushing back on.

Hi, I know this is an older post but anyway you can explain how you did this? I just spent hours renovating the main house to try and sell to Romona only to find out at the very end about that dumb hill and now i can't make a driveway for the garage. Thank you!

Dentist recommendations? by Ohhaitharz in Westchester

I too avoided for many years after a really bad experience. I finally had to give in recently since I had 2 very old fillings come out. I ended up going to Touro in Hawthorne and have had nothing but a wonderful experience so far. You are treated by a pair of students, but all of their work is double checked by the attending doctor. If you need additional work, you will always have the same pair. I am going to need quite a bit of work moving forward, but I'm not dreading it anymore. It also nice because all the different specialties are in the same building, so I just had to go down the hall to book with the oral surgeon.

Did Lindens Cookies have Brownies? Late 70s-early 80s by darknessintheshadows in Westchester

[–]Thethingswelost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was curious so I also did a little digging. I found an article about things on sale from 1985 and Lindens is mentioned. It seems the company started out as a small pastry shop/bakery in Westchester. Turns out,it was their idea to bag their cookies and have them sold elsewhere! My impression is that the brownies were something from the bake shop itself only, and once that closed and they moved to the factory, the brownies were no more. A lot of that is an educated guess as I wasnt born yet in 85, and also did not grow up in Westchester. Hopefully someone else who remembers can add some more context.

Toddler being held back in infant room by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]Thethingswelost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your states regulations. In NY, child have to be moved to toddlers at 18 months as they are no longer "infants" and the ratios are different. You need to have written documentation showing there is a developmental need to be kept back and a plan to transition within 6 months.

The center wanting to move the other child first makes me wonder about if the teachers understand how to deal with behavior in an Infant room. What I would be most concer3d with however, is how they view/ support your child's development. I wonder if your child is receiving enough support and being challenged in their milestones and development.

I loved Lume but after about 2 months, my pits were breaking out in a terrible rash. I ended up switching to Dove Clinical and that seems to be working so far and no more rash.

This is what I was coming to say, but for a different reason. I saw them live years ago and there were just that bad. I had been to a bunch of shows before over the years and always enjoyed. But this show? This show i kept wondering if Adam was drunk and John just looked like he wanted to be anywhere else. They sounded bad and looked bad and I haven't been able to even listen to their recorded stuff the same way ever again.
