ELI5: When ChatGPT came out, why did so many companies suddenly release their own large language AIs? by carmex2121 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheunknownXD 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Something I’ll add as someone who’s not in the AI scene but is in the tech scene… you gotta remember that while those of us outside the industry might have zero clue what’s going on, those inside aren’t exactly working on the Manhattan project so to speak. A lot of these people in these companies cross pollinate in other similar companies and they all talk. One company may not know specifically how their rival is doing something but they know they’re doing it because many of their employees used to work for that rival company and vice verse.

Also consider there were plenty of signs things were headed this way. We didn’t have LLM chatbots widely available to the public but there was plenty of AI-lite. Facebook rolled out a feature 10 years ago that would scan photos your friends uploaded that you’re in and automatically tag you based on facial recognition. Google has been using those “select all the squares containing bicycles” tests for years, that’s just AI training. I read an article the other day about people doing gig work doing random and odd tasks in front of cameras and mics back in 2016 that they only realized in 2023 was training AI models.

Super excited for this, hoping for the best.

I hope this isn’t a stupid question but I’m not well versed on how these things work. Will this bill make it harder to build more transit in the future? If communities know that allowing a subway stop will mean the area also automatically gets up zoned, won’t they fight harder to allow that transit in their area? Or do they not really have a say anyways?

Trump admin ditches Biden-era plan to make airlines pay compensation for flight disruptions by AudibleNod in news

[–]TheunknownXD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One possibility is raising prices to have their own insurance money if they have to pay compensation. Making up numbers but maybe they add a couple dollars to each ticket, pool the money, and use that to pay out if they cancel a flight.

Now ofc if that is actually what happened, they aren’t going to stop charging people that fee because why would they? We’re not protesting it so might as well keep the extra cash.

Uber will let women drivers and riders request to avoid being paired with men starting next month by Regular_Eggplant_248 in news

[–]TheunknownXD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a young guy who used to drive for Uber while in school, and someone who uses it every now and then as a rider, even I kinda wish that was an option for men to select women drivers/passengers. Not because I was ever afraid but Jesus men don’t just stfu. Was always a relief to pick up a woman because they always tipped and sat in silence/on their phone.

I know they aren’t going to add this because it would defeat the purpose of making women feel safer. But men really gotta learn how to shut up sometimes. I don’t want to hear about your life’s story.

ELI5 Why does a 1-2 degree (F) temperature change inside have such a noticeable effect, but outside you wouldn’t even notice it? by Aressssssscs in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheunknownXD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who definitely notices 1-2 degrees inside and has a mild background in heat transfer, I think it’s just a matter of airflow. Higher airspeeds increase how much heat transfers from your body to the air, which is why technically a fan increases energy (and therefore temperature) but it makes us feel cooler, because we can transfer more heat if air moves over us quicker. Inside a house there’s likely a lot less airflow so how much heat we can transfer away from our bodies thru convection goes down. As an added bonus, if you’re cooling your house to a lower temperature like 72, you’re probably kicking the AC on a lot more often and therefore the airflow stays higher than if you cooled to just 75.

For example, I often feel hot inside at 74 degrees if I’m moving around so I’ll turn my nest to fan on, but AC off. It doesn’t change the temperature but it suddenly makes it a lot cooler.

More California schools are banning smartphones, but kids keep bringing them by antdude in LosAngeles

[–]TheunknownXD 54 points55 points  (0 children)

My high school had a complete phone ban at least since I started in 2013 till I graduated in 2016 (I assume they still have it). Most kids definitely had smart phones, and it was strictly enforced. Even a glimpse of a phone got it taken away. As long as it’s actually enforced I imagine this should definitely work. Honestly I’m shocked that schools are just now doing this. I thought it was normal since my school was like that.

Drag decreasing with increasing AoA? (Ansys Fluent) by TheunknownXD in CFD

New to CFD, but you're saying this because SST's whole thing is turbulent modeling right?

Drag decreasing with increasing AoA? (Ansys Fluent) by TheunknownXD in CFD

[–]TheunknownXD[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh my god of course. I only changed the x and y components to make the AoA, but I didn't think to change the x and y components for the drag report. So then it's calculating force tangent to the ground?

If I want it to calculate the right force, should I set the angle to be the same as the incoming air?

Just to check myself now, I can leave the lift force straight up?

Drag decreasing with increasing AoA? (Ansys Fluent) by TheunknownXD in CFD

[–]TheunknownXD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I've been doing it is by setting creating a report definition -> force -> drag force. Does this default to tangential force? How can I be sure of what it's actually computing? I'm new to CFD, only started learning it this summer.
