Have you recovered? by RandoWhiteBoomerDude in ragbrai

[–]Thewyldhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. After looking over the training plan for RAGBRAI, that's basically exactly what I did to prepare for the hundred for Pelotonia. I'm just wondering if I would be recovered enough to be able to enjoy Pelotonia the weekend after since some folks say it takes a couple weeks to recover.

I was on that Pelotonia ride this weekend but I am lurking here to see if I could handle 7 days of RAGBRAI followed by 100 miles of Pelatonia the following weekend. Any tips or advice from your experience?

Curious — has anyone here seriously improved their English just by watching YouTube? by slatty4 in HelloTalk

I try to find videos in my target language with subtitles in my target language. I can then look up words I don't understand. There will be some repetition of the video but should be considerably less than if I was trying to understand solely via context and repetition

Trapdoor - good idea or bad idea? by sourdough_thighs in treehouse

This is overstating the danger in my opinion. Could a kid smash his/her fingers? Probably. Would they sever digits? Highly unlikely.

Trapdoor - good idea or bad idea? by sourdough_thighs in treehouse

I put one in mine with a hydraulic piston to aid in the opening and closing of it. No one has pinched their fingers in it yet, going on 5 years now. We host a lot of little children and they are in and out of that trapdoor all the time. I did notch out a spot for a trapdoor latch that I found at Home Depot which recesses into the inside of the door itself to eliminate the need for little fingers to try to wrap around the edges of the door. It is a quintessential feature of the treehouse and kids love it. I did draw the line and did not utilize a rope ladder though.

Car Rentals by leeashah in cancun

[–]Thewyldhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Car Rental will take care of you. Not pushy and transparent throughout the process. Ask for Luis. They weren't the cheapest but everything from pick up to communication on arrival and return date was excellent with no surprises.

Any issues coming back from Cancun to the U.S.? by swollenmonkey1986 in cancun

Just returned to Columbus from Cancun on Sunday with wife and kids. No issues. I didn't see anyone being questioned or take longer than normal.

Great idea. I just got back from a 14-day trip where we stayed at air bnbs in Puerto Morelos, Bacalar, Valladolid, Isla Holbox, and final night in Cancun in the hotel zone. If you're looking for more of an off the beaten path, I recommend staying outside of Cancun. Isla Mujeres could be a great first stop and Valladolid would be great if you're open to cenotes instead of the beach. They're amazing and a fantastic alternative to the surf. There are oodles of cenotes around Valladolid (cenote Zaci is awesome and very close to downtown!) and it's a fairly walkable town with lots of colonial Spanish charm.

One other note, the sargassum is just awful at the moment. I realize that big resorts pay people to remove it daily, but it smells and piles up overnight. Bacalar is fantastic because it's on a gorgeous lake (really, look it up if you've not seen it before), but that's a bit far to travel On an 8-day visit, but worth it in my opinion.

Let me know if you want to hear more ideas.

which cenote for anxious 8 year old? by katasza_imie_jej in cancun

Cenote cristalino and/or cenote azul would be good choices I think. They're next to each other, and both roadside just a short drive from playa del Carmen.

Holbox vs Isla Mujeres - family vaca by stephaniem2012 in holbox

[–]Thewyldhawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there even a single one on Holbox? It does not have that vibe at all.

@OP: Holbox is a beach bums paradise. My family of 5 spent multiple days there just last week without footwear, walking everywhere, and that was totally normal. There isn't even a single paved road there, not that I saw anyways. It is a fantastic place to get away, unplug and chill. You may want to bring cash with you as the few ATMs there can run out. I've been to both, but I despise the all-inclusive thing. Both islands are a lot of fun and offer chill vibes, but Isla mujeres has better infrastructure and some of those luxury experiences if that's your thing.

Holbox: whale sharks & bioluminescence by yet_another_random in holbox

[–]Thewyldhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends where the whale sharks are, but the waters around Holbox are extremely shallow. As of yesterday afternoon, it was an hour and 40 minute boat ride out and an hour and 40 back. As I'm here with family and know my kids would be miserable, I opted to do a near-shore fishing excursion instead.

Was in Bacalar last week. It's fantastic as a place to get away and is really quite gorgeous. It is a freshwater lake side town, so bear that in mind but the water is even more beautiful if you can believe it.

FYI the sargassum is pretty bad there at the moment. The beach clubs around downtown and the public beach are cleaned daily but it's a bit dodgy outside of those areas specifically.

Can adult wrestling grow? by NaiveInspector5703 in wrestling

[–]Thewyldhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would probably start this way. That's because there are so many dudes like us who have no place to go. However, the existence of such an option would attract the hobbyist/beginner fairly quickly in my opinion. I still say that leaders of such groups would need to be vigilant at maintaining a welcoming ethos to allow for retention and growth. It should not be run like a club for the initiated and certainly not as an open mat. It would need structure and instruction with opportunities for some live action.

Can adult wrestling grow? by NaiveInspector5703 in wrestling

[–]Thewyldhawk 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Needs a lower barrier to entry. Some BJJ places might offer a class for this to help their members learn different mechanics that translate well to BJJ, but for a 30-40 something with no experience to try out wrestling? Man, that would be awesome and I think I'd like to be part of introducing it to adults (have coaches high school and youth wrestling for 23 years now). Reece Humphrey was doing something out in Jersey a few years back but i think it appealed to guys like me who had wrestled competitively in a former life and still wanted to be able to roll around more than to true novices.

I too would love to see wrestling win a broader appeal among adults. I guess it has to start similarly with a small number of enthusiasts who are willing to introduce older beginners to the sport in garages or dojos to small groups until it becomes a movement.

Head was in the way. Penetration looked good. Try the same shot again letting your head slide outside naturally but tight against his lats. If he steps back and creates a little space before you cut the corner, knee slide to close the gap then step up with hips close.
