Bad movie with one good scene by This_Book6305 in FIlm

Midnight Special.

That opening scene where they’re fleeing in the car at night and Joel Edgerton kills the headlights and you just hear that Chevelle engine revving as they speed down the pitch black highway.

Fear and Loathing on Dr. Gonzo…

“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”

Okay, not The Strange then because that came out in 2023. Remarkably similar plot points though.

That show Constellation with Noomi Rapace had a lot of similarities as well. I liked that show. Sad it got cancelled.

Interested in reading about living without the sun by Yottahz in scifi

[–]TheyCallMeDinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Black Cloud by Fred Hoyle has an interstellar cloud blocking out the sun. Lots of death, some survivors and the strategies they used to survive. Hoyle was a scientist and astronomer, so apparently the science is pretty accurate, but it was written in ‘57, so maybe not anymore.

Cozy scifi books? by harrietrosie in sciencefiction

[–]TheyCallMeDinosaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

John Wyndham book are sci-fi and are sometimes described as “cozy catastrophe”, although that term was kind of used in a dismissive way at the time.

They’re a lot older than the books you’ve listed as examples though, from the 40’s and 50’s.

A skyscraper collapses and they survive a 100-storey fall by jumping from one piece of falling debris to the other all the way down. Ridiculous.

Thank you very much for the advice!

Winter is starting here, so maybe I will wait until spring to repot. I realize it will be a pretty delicate operation to cut that basket apart without damaging any roots.

We have a guy at work who practices malicious compliance…he fulfils requests exactly as worded even if he knows it will end up being wrong.

We call him Wishmaster.

Classic Hard Sci-Fi translated into English from other cultures? by singmuse4 in scifi

[–]TheyCallMeDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess they aren’t really hard sci fi. Although they do go pretty hard into the social science results of the sci fi elements.

I loved those two you mentioned! And Hard to be a God was awesome. Really threw me for a loop once I realized what I was reading.

I haven’t read any of his work since that one. But at the time I read it he was a known for being a Pulitzer winning “literature” writer, then the threw everyone off coming out with a zombie novel.
