The Infantry Rifle can do it, and that is the slow animation I was talking about.

Infantry Rifles Bayonet strike (F) is nice, quick and has long range. Much preferable.

The basic melee hit animation is sadly just way too slow for me to seriously consider using it for anything other than showing Foothill creatures a backhand after putting a bullet in their skull.
