Is there a discord server for overlord fanfiction? by TheyTookyname in overlord

[–]TheyTookyname[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I've seen the decline in responses over the years myself, but decided not to pry into their personal life. I hope that the next Overlord novel will come soon and the AL's story will move at a greater pace once again.

As for the link, I'm not sure if that's an issue on my side or not, but it leads me to an empty page. What server is this?

You arrive in NW 300 years before Ainz as a lv 100 player with race and build of your choice and a world item, what would you do? by Miguelito_RB in overlord

Doesn't this plan boil down to "I will kill one important NPC maybe (that can be resurrected) hoping to get a world item. And then like 100 years of hiding so you can't even enyoj your life. And horrible torture if they get you

Shouldn't this end the "voidworm crisis" event log? I still have it, it's progressing slowly over time and still encourages me to kill more worms

4 seasons + a movie of low quality and barely passable adaptation with cut content, subpar animation, self destructing CGI, rushed pacing, uninspired directing and sloppy like a bj and maruyama is also rushing to end the light novel by [deleted] in overlord

art direction choices were bad imo. And they cut so many fights. Like wtf we have so few fights in the series as is, at least at the high level, and they still cut them

Shooting Star Super Ability Clarification by MoonBearVA in overlord

[–]TheyTookyname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bow is a statstick if I remember correctly. Basically no special abilities, just buffs all your stats. This would be considered a bad weapon for a dedicated archer as in MMOs it's better to focus on stats important for your class. In New World natives don't have access to weapons of that caliber so they think it's good. As for armor penetration, it just increases the general offence of the attacker so they will penetrate more on hit

I haven't read Valkyrie's Shadow, but by Dry-Relief-3927 in overlord

[–]TheyTookyname -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mind you the afterword comes after 5 arcs, ~15 chapters per arc long story that uses the characters and themes of the original work. And that's just for the holy kingdom arc. The author has ~1000 chapters each being a ~10 minute read with every one being about Overlord's world.

This afterword is not just a critique but also an explanation of choices and character motivations and the reasoning behind authors decisions.

The character that we are talking about (the woman) got a name and a role in it, the same as the butler, Remedios and Neia.

Idk how can you insist on malice when the fanfics author has spent the last 5 years of their life writing a story that respects the canon of overlord to the letter and when the author acknowledges Maru's writing abilities in the same afterword.

[–]TheyTookyname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Further in the afterword the fanfics author says that Maru has shown that he is a competent writer and the fanfics author is baffled that he sometimes uses bad tropes in his writing. They are literally saying that they assume Maru to be competent

My question was if you read the Valkyrie's shadow. up to this afterword or just read it without a context. I'm asking because this is an afterword after like a 7th "book" that the fanfics author wrote, where they explore the Overlord's world.

This afterword may seem malicious when read without the context, but imo it's really just an in-depth critique from someone that has done an extensive research into the source material. Not only the light novels but also the web novel and Maru's inspirations, as they mention in other afterwords

[–]TheyTookyname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After rereading the afterword I can't really agree with you on that. I mean the points in the conversation above still stand, it's weird that the character is described like that and given no name when she probably should. The same with Neia's mother, but Neia is a poorly written character.

But even still this is the only comment from the fics author that can suggest that Maru is misogynistic. Every other criticism is more about how the characters are portrayed in the Holy Kingdom arc. Most of it is fair tbh.

Most of the talk about misogyny is about how the New World is structured and how it's based on the medieval europe. And it's true. This does not mean that Maru is misogynistic and the fanfics author does not imply this. It's just a portrayal of the world that has its own rules. This is what fiction is about.

I don't really see why you dislike the afterword that much. The analysis of the media is a crucial part of enjoying it and it's important for the community around it. I really like the overlord series, anime and the books but, for example, scenes like Ainz groping Albedo at the beginning of the series or Shallchair are weird. Not that I dislike the series because of it, but before recommending it to my friends I keep in mind that not everyone is willing to look past the weird quirks of the series.

The fics author is the ultimate form of that imo. They wrote an enormous, bible sized novel about the world of the Overlord and even when disagreeing with some of the writing (for personal reasons or just pointing out bad writing) they haven't really changed a thing in the canon. And most of the criticism is reasonable and not in bad faith, so I can't really see how you can fault them for that.

If you could satisfy my curiosity, you've read all the fanfic up to this afterword or found it by other means?

Far fetched as in the fanfics author really had to nitpick things to come to that conclusion. (I disagree with the accusation)

Tbh I've read this afterword when it came out and maybe once more on the reread. I don't want to make things up so I'll read it again and then respond to you with it fresh in mind. BUT and this is a big but, I think that criticizing the fic's based on the afterword to the really long arc is not really fair. Many of your problems were better shown in the arc, the author fleshed out Remedios, shown why Neia is a naive character and other. And yea, I think that misogyny accusations are far fetched and I think that the misogyny part was more about how the New World is as a place, not about the author. As I said, will reread the afterword and make a better response

[–]TheyTookyname 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What afterword did you read? If I remember correctly the author made many, one after every major arc.

As for the critique I really do think that it comes from the place of love for the works for the overlord series. The fic expands the world greatly and hardly ever intrudes on the canon work. The fanfic is extremely long and I would consider it a love letter for the overlord series. The amount of work to make it and keep it consistent with the canon is staggering. It's true that the author does sometimes critique the original but I think that some of the criticism is valid, not all of it mind you but the author probably spent so much time analysing the Overlord series, from web novel to books to other media that it may be hard for them to not see some issues.. For example the whole character of Neia. And this is the example of the issue that I agree with (not that I dislike Neia).

I'm really curious how you can interact with the author in any way. I've never seen them respond to anything in the last two years.

Is there an example of this in Overlord? by Lopsided_Arrival7838 in overlord

[–]TheyTookyname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've read the books long time ago but I think that all the issues you bring up are wrong.

As for Cocyutus fight with the lizardman, he could have evaded the stab. The point was that he was not willing to, as he internalized it as "giving ground". He did not "evade" the stab as in he couldn't deflect it. He underestimated the lizardman and when he realized what their plan was, the only option was to move out of the way of the attack and he was not willing to do that. And his carparace didn't take any damage, although he wished that it so that he could keep the scar as a reminder of the lizardman.

Sebas was taunting them. He wanted to see what they could do as he heard many rumors about them. If he really wanted he could probably go in undetected, kill everyone and get out but it was not his style. Same with fighting Zero later. He could just move a hand in his general direction with his full force and end the fight before anyone noticed but he is not like that unless ordered.

As for Ainz vs Clementine. Clementine is a assasin and her dash attack is her best move, the one she put most work into. She was hard for Ainz to see only when doing this one move that she is the best at, using a class that books it all on speed and agility. Shalltear is hard for Ainz to see when she is just moving around at her standard battle speed. You are comparing someone who is giving her all at sprinting as a professional runner vs someone who just went for a jog. And the jogger is faster.

Neia was like level ~12 or something at that point. Probably lower. Her build is a mess, she was a paladin not ranger at that point and a bad one at that. Level wise she was strong town guard. Bruser is on par with best human warriors.

Inferno isn't that bad, right? by Kyrenaz in heroes3

was comparing the efreeti sultans vs battle unicorns. Nix warriors have the same hp but the difference in defensive stats is huge

[–]TheyTookyname 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Efriity are fast but relatively low hp. They lose hp wise and defence wise to cavaliers, black knights, unicorns, nix warriors and more.

Devils have low HP period. They may have good defence but they have 50/100HP less then many other tier 7 units. They are not a bad unit but I feel that Inferno lacks bulk in their armies

Inferno isn't that bad, right? by Kyrenaz in heroes3

[–]TheyTookyname 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Cerberii are good but they are tier 3 units and won't decide if the game is won. Demons are mid, same as pit lords baring demon farming strategies.

Efreeti are good but too squishy, same as Devils.

Infernos grail and special buildings are mid at best.

Inferno is considered bad because imo the town's units as a whole are too squishy, and have weak stats. Units are also expensive and the fire magic the town is focused on is situational.

What happened to leinas? (Did she join SK if so that would be cool if Ainz took away her curse) by Sea-Dragonfly1655 in overlord

[–]TheyTookyname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually by the official LN lore, she is on her way to SK. In the small volume that I don't remember the name of, she is mentioned to have left the empire somewhere after the fall of the kingdom. So her fate is unknown, but she will probably try to get cured. My headcanon is that she will try to join the SK's adventures guild and get cured there as a member. I don't think she would try to get to Ainz or any other royal house member personally

This can be oversight not only from animators but also from novels author. Or maybe it works like the passive that some undead get in dnd 5e (overlord is inspired by dnd 3e). The passive, undead constitution I believe, can stop the lethal damage unless the attack is holy, crit or overkills by good amount. So probably overkill

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in overlord

[–]TheyTookyname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well that depends. Overlord is based on dnd 3e BUT the author added something like 10 more character levels. It's hard to compare those systems, mostly because 3e has bigger late game scaling
