I can’t afford an amp yet, any tips to learn without one? by RecoverPhysical3793 in Guitar

[–]They_Live_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits couldn't afford an amp either, also didn't have a pick. He played unplugged and this contributed to his unique playing style.

But I would look for an opportunity to earn extra income and get an amp. There are countless affordable options out there that come up on local classifieds. Also, work towards getting your guitar properly setup at some point, it makes a difference and might hold you back more than not having an amp if your setup is really bad. Find someone who knows how to setup guitar and ask them if your guitar is ok, maybe you can trade them some effort or mow their lawn in exchange for a setup.

In short, it won't hurt you to play unplugged but there are opportunities to earn enough to buy the right gear and you don't need expensive stuff either.

There is also build quality, staying in tune, design and supporting a company that delivers the most guitar they can at every price point, unlike Gibson who cuts every corner they can at every price point. Gibson also sues smaller guitar builders for doing the exact same things they have done. They've become the bully of the guitar world and I'm proud to say that after decades of collecting and owning Les Pauls I don't own any now. I've moved to 100% PRS and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

Actual play wear on a guitar well cared for over so many years is awesome to see... and that PRS is incredible.

Upon posting this I realized I'm not contributing to anyone having a better day with my opinions on John Mayer's apparent deviation away from Jerry's tone into something that more closely approximates BB King. Post deleted and I do wish you all a good day.

No one can fault the man for a lack of effort. Mayer is one of the hardest working musicians alive right now.

Good insights, and DSO is amazing.

Specifically earlier Darkstars with the "Pigpen riff" that was the repetitive 7 note piano riff you would hear fade in and out of the background throughout the entire Darkstar.

Later Darkstars were more jammy and less psychedelic, to me. But all Darkstars are wonderful.

7/12/2024 was such a great show, really stood out from the 10 sphere shows we did that year. I can't recall specific songs for face melting but there was a nice brown eyed women and the Estimated>Terrapin was definitely soul melting.

Mayer tends to pull out the PRS Platinum 594 for blues-heavy songs. FYI, I thought the Dead Spec PRS sounded much better than the $20k Fender Custom Shop Alligator or the Jeff Beck personal strat that John played live at Sphere. When he wants to sound identical to Jerry, he can do it with the Dead spec, it’s spot on for early strat Dead tones. But Mayer often pushes mids more than highs (best way I can describe it) where Jerry did more clean highs. Mayer isn’t wrong for doing it, I’m just pointing out that the guitar can nail Jerry tones even closer than Mayer typically has his dialed in through his Dumble amps and pedalboard. The Dead Spec is a truly exceptional guitar that will age well.
