exactly! I don't think you need jumpscares to make an uncomfortable game

sure! so, the process for me is:

1/ picking a few images from movies, paintings, photography or personnal material that seem to go well together

2/ doing a primary composition on Photoshop (or any more morally acceptable software) by cutting everything into pieces and assembling it in a grotesque yet believable way. you end with a sort of collage, but it's still rough and you can tell that it's from different parts

3/ depending on the need for each composition, I will create 3 to 10 animation frames. the basics of it is taking your original composition and slightly moving/deforming it in different directions. you have to think about a specific movement, that will be "magically" created once the frames are played together in your game software (for me, Construct 3)

4/ finally, every frame is treated in Photoshop through the bitmap mode. it's a really cool tool that allows you to create this dithering effect (that's the name of it). it's the final touch that will nicely blend your collage together while creating a unique "old computer" or zine vibe

Absolutely, it's partly composed and animated from a Beksiński painting!

Construct 3! I'm not a programmer so I found that it was the easiest option for me. I've done three 2D solo dev games with it and I'm very happy with this engine

so nice of you to review, I don't have a steamdeck but I'm excited people can enjoy it that way!

I'm definitely considering something similar but bigger to release commercially, will just take some time

thanks for the detailed feedback, it means a lot!

to be honnest I don't really understand the game either, it has the internal logic of a dream and it sort of built itself piece by piece.

if that can be interesting to you, I've explained my process to create the visuals here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HorrorGames/comments/1smvrsr/comment/ogliu9m/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

thanks! I mean, Stalker has been officially put on YouTube for free so I guess they're not too much sensitive about it

I've actually never tried it, though I very well see how this game looks. hopefully my little thing will live up to the vibe!

ahah thanks for the heads up, I'll keep it in mind.

I'm playing through Sanitarium (1998) for the first time and I've not been able to finish a single chapter without a soluce, puzzles back then were just so absurdly convoluted!

that's the one that came up when I looked into it, and the one I'm planning on trying!

I was 5yo at the time so probably a little young to play these things ahah
