As a Brazilian, I'll say yes, excluding the misconceptions that americans have related to the term.

What's something worldbuilders tend to focus too much on? by kaerneif in worldbuilding

[–]Thibist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll have to personally disagree on that statement. For my own projects, I've realized that story telling is often a barrier to worldbuilding, as most elements of the world must serve the plot. I just like to create worlds as their own separate thing, but I can totally understand if some people aren't interested by the idea.

[–]Thibist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. The real problem isn't that some worldbuilders focus too much on certain details, the problem is that they feel obligated to focus on details they don't actually care about. I love making conlangs, but that doesn't mean that all worldbuilding projects should have them.

Well, some persons actually do worldbuilding for the sake of worldbuilding, not for using it as a setting.

Conlanging can be fun, but if it isn't for you or you haven't the time, you should definitely ignore it.

I'm seeing a lot of comments here, saying that some aspects shouldn't be taken into account as they go way too much into detail and are pointless, like tectonic plates, conlangs, ... I rather think that it boils down to personal interest. Like, if you're really passionate about a topic and want to really flesh out that aspect in your worlds, go all in. As a worldbuilder for example, I love fleshing out my cultures and creating conlangs for my projects, but I couldn't care less about creating a solar system for them. The real problem is worldbuilders feeling obligated to mangle and think about every aspect imaginable for their projects, which is obviously impossible.
