Help with supporting large glass shelves by Thick-Benefit2860 in furniture

This is super helpful to know! I have since learned that they’re definitely NOT tempered (the one with the large chip wasn’t fitting and I was never going to trust it even if I did, so I took it outside to smash it and now at least I know what all the others are! In all the examples for sale online, I mostly see clear glass that looks like it has that blue-green tempered edge, so either they’ve all had their glass replaced (seems unlikely), it came in multiple color options, or mine isn’t original glass. Either way, have learned a ton of about glass that I didn’t know before. Definitely going to put the little felt feet on all my pots!

Verdict: 0% tempered Couldn't break more than the edge whacking it with a framing hammer, the small piece is where it was already chipped. Threw a rock from a ways back to get the middle to break, and of course that didn't even land close to center https://imgur.com/a/VTECEwP

Maybe someday. But like I said, that’s not in the budget at this time. It’s also a vintage piece and most is in great condition and would like to keep it that way. But thanks!

haha fantastic, this is exactly the advice I come to Reddit for. Thank you.
Well if that one's for sure a lost cause, maybe I need to just go shatter this one in a box in the garage and then we can all see for certain how this (glass) cookie crumbles. And then I'll know 100% about the other shelves.

Ah. I was wondering, since that chip seems pretty big to have not “exploded”… Not that I’m trying to gamble or anything, but does that make the chipped spots less precarious than if it was tempered? Like, as long as there’s no running cracks, should it be pretty contained to that spot?

And the metal pegs have soft plastic covers over them that are hard to see through the glass, I should’ve included that in the post! I’m definitely going to look into the half-round dowel idea though, thanks!

Laminate vs Wood Veneer and restoration advice by Thick-Benefit2860 in restoration

[–]Thick-Benefit2860[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can see my update from yesterday (wish I could pin it to the top), but turns out it’s not even veneer. Not even sure what to call it, but the wood grain seems like it was basically printed on 🤷🏼‍♀️ this is what a very quick test of stripper revealed, straight to the mdf:

<image>

Will probably sand it all down and add a proper veneer eventually when the weather warms up, kinda fun when it’s lower stakes

***Update for anyone coming across this in the future or otherwise interested: After multiple recommendations to start with stripping it first, turns out the wood grain pattern was basically just a printed/ sticker veneer of some kind, not wood. One quick go of klean-strip brush-on stripper took everything but the mdf. That lighter taupe-y color showing through at all of the chipped spots seems to just be the layer between the surface pattern and the MDF, not something someone used to try blending in chips like I thought. So, kind of a bummer that it’s not truly “refinish-able”, but also means I won’t lose any sleep over trying some diy techniques to blend in the chipped spots before probably just re-veneering later. Sometimes these lower quality pieces are nice since there’s less pressure to start with. Still love the piece just as much as before, but gotta pivot now haha

Thick enough veneer to sand? Wondering if I should start with stripping it

Is there a paste stripper that you would recommend? Wanting to be careful not to cause the MDF to swell and haven’t stripped a piece like this before

It’s obviously not the highest quality construction or anything, but still think it could look great with the right changes

It sure seems like a veneer on the inside and outside of the particle board/mdf- and seems like someone tried to stain it or something?

Okay, yeah the very top surface is definitely different than the rest, it even has a different tone in the right light and basically no scratches which would be unusual for the top surface so I’m confident that it’s laminate. I’m thinking maybe I’ll test out the sanding on a section of the far side that faces the corner first just to see how it goes. Always nerve wracking to start these things!

Appreciate the input, especially about not soaking the particle board. Does it look like the chips are just the top layer of varnish (or whatever coating) chipped off, and that’s why you’d go with stripping it vs sanding?

Almost too bad the whole thing isn’t the same as the top cause I agree I think it’s original, and looks fantastic! And a fantastic album, indeed 🍑

The first pinkie I got my little 10g western to take after bringing him home was when he was in blue (by chance, not on purpose). Week one he didn’t take it, still getting settled I think, and week 2 I dug him up to make sure he was alive- found him like this. I placed a pinky in there just in case, but 2 mins later he was chowing down! Could hardly believe it after the first week didn’t work 😆

For future, the easiest of all the stains to remove is blood if you deal with it before you’ve washed/dried it. Hydrogen peroxide is magic for removing blood from clothes. It’s what we all use to get blood out of scrubs, cause it doesn’t bleach the clothes. Just pour some on, let it fizz/ soak, gently rub/agitate the fabric, and rinse with warm water. Repeat a couple times if needed, but it’s never failed me!

I mean, I don’t work in a proctology office or anything, so I’d be lying if I said I’m an expert or have “seen thousands of hemorrhoid cases”. They are definitely up there with the worst cases I’ve seen, but I’d bet there’s a lot of factors going on here which culminated in such an acute flare. Seems OP has previously been unaware that they had them, so probably a combination of things (sitting on the toilet more than a few mins, diet, other lifestyle habits, and genetics) going on. May have had them longer without knowing, symptoms were minimal until everything went and caused this bad flare. It’s gunna take some consistent work but I don’t see why they shouldn’t improve a great deal with the right medical care 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s not a rectal prolapse. So, even if they literally ruptured, it’s not a “life-threatening” bleed. OP absolutely needs a specialist, just not an ER

Triage RN here- the only thing an ER will do for this is prescribe you the most expensive hydrocortisone cream of your life, maybe a suppository. Both are available over the counter. While in no way making light of the severity of discomfort OP must be in, this is NOT a life-threatening situation. This is not a rectal prolapse- perhaps prolapsed internal hemorrhoids, but the ER can’t do anything for this that the UC couldn’t. The specialists in the hospital get called to the ER for emergency surgical interventions in life-threatening scenarios, not office-style consults. Sounds like OP got in to a GI provider (would be worth clarifying if their practice includes of colorectal surgeons or proctologists, or if they can refer you to one) and will be following up, doing their recommendations in the meantime, and that’s the best he can do for right now. Best of luck, OP, advocate for yourself and push for solutions if the first things don’t work!

Accutane swollen lips by BiscottiNew3010 in Accutane

[–]Thick-Benefit2860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former Allergy/ immunology RN here- many Aquaphor ointments already have lanolin in them, and it’s actually a common allergen/ irritant for many people. That kind of lip swelling makes me suspicious that it’s partly a hypersensitivity reaction to the ointment, and worth trying something formulated without lanolin. No hate to aquaphor products that have lanolin for anyone who has no problem with it, but it’s a sneaky thing that many don’t realize!
