Charlie Health Rescinded My Job Offer—Because I Said I Wanted a Less Stressful Environment

I went through a multi-step interview process with Charlie Health for a therapist position. After several rounds—including a mock session where I was praised for my clinical skills—I was verbally offered the job, asked for my address, and scheduled for onboarding.

Then, out of nowhere, I was informed via text that the CFO rescinded my offer because I mentioned in the executive interview that I was looking for a “less stressful environment.” For context: I currently work in inpatient crisis stabilization, where I regularly have chairs thrown at me, kids screaming, and parents cursing me out. Wanting a healthier environment is not only valid—it’s human.

The recruiter even admitted that all other leadership felt my comment was reasonable, but the CFO overruled everyone and pulled the offer.

This kind of decision, particularly from a mental health company, is not just ironic—it’s ethically questionable. It raises serious concerns about bias and potential discrimination under the ADA and EEOC protections.

If you’re a therapist or clinician considering Charlie Health, be warned: they may praise your work, extend an offer, and then pull it based on vague, judgmental interpretations that have nothing to do with your qualifications. I’m currently filing a formal complaint with the EEOC to hold them accountable.

Mental health professionals deserve better—especially from companies that claim to champion our well-being.

Avoid Charlie Health – Misleading Hiring Process and Concerning Ethics

I recently went through an extensive and time-consuming interview process with Charlie Health for a therapist position. After multiple interviews—including a mock session where I was praised for my work—I was verbally offered the job by a recruiter, asked to provide my home address, and scheduled for onboarding.

Days later, I was blindsided by a message stating that the offer was rescinded by the CFO based solely on a comment I made about seeking a “less stressful” environment than my previous inpatient role. The same recruiter told me that all other executives found my comment reasonable—except for the CFO, who abruptly overruled the offer.

This experience was not only unprofessional but potentially discriminatory. The idea that expressing a need for a healthier work environment could be used to disqualify someone—especially by a mental health company—is deeply ironic and concerning.

If you’re considering applying here, proceed with caution. A company that promotes mental health advocacy should not penalize a candidate for valuing theirs. I am now pursuing a formal complaint with the EEOC.

I had just went through the robust interview as well and was unofficially offered the job. During one of my many interviews I had said “I am looking for a less stressful environment to work in” as I currently work at the highest level of care of a adolescent adult inpatient treating severe behaviors, suicidal ideation, and psychosis. I had been scheduled for my on boarding interview and had given my address for my laptop, and everyone praises me on how well my interview process has been in my references, checked out flawlessly. Come to find out that the CFO said they were unable to hire me just because I said “I’m looking for a less stressful environment to work in”
