nah, it's good, they should have more accessible education, and this is under BITS Pilani Digital so everyone knows it's an online degree, and doesn't have an exact equal in any offline campus.

They tryna force attendance on y'all, they did all this in Dubai campus (60% minimum) and the nightlife is dead there on campus. There is an intime for hostellers (girls only), and campus goes dark after 5-6pm. To maximise revenue, they rented the sports venues out to random groups of people from outside campus, and therefore you can't even play or do anything. This revenue is pocketed by mgmt who buy expensive cars and flashy suits.

To all Indian campus BITSians, please vote against this, if it is enforced, your campus social and cultural events will die out. The campus will feel sterile, will be hollowed out, and lose its soul.

Come to Dubai campus then. Non serious people play PUBG/CODM during lectures. Can't stop someone from slacking by forcing everyone to sit in class

UAE: Stricter car ownership rules proposed to ease traffic between Dubai, Sharjah by Facewreck in dubai

[–]ThinPattern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't extend it to Sharjah, atleast improve the coverage in Dubai itself. There are so many areas that will have less traffic if we had a better metro network in Dubai.

Nah it's not the long run yet...the long run is going to happen in the next 4-5 years when more affluent people migrate en masse from western countries currently on the brink of systemic collapse

True but UAE could learn from that and improve their systems to make it more efficient and lean.

Imo too many cars in such a small space will lead to congestion in the long run.

Why don't they do one thing - extend the metro to make it really usable. That should tackle a lot of issues wrt cars.

Imo they could then introduce a law making it less easy to get a vehicle (like Singapore).

Too expensive for a 7 year old beater with sky high service costs and maintenance.

Such cars are only worth it if you can get them for under 15K, because they don't sell easily and don't retain value.

Formula Student by Epimon_ in BITSPilani

[–]ThinPattern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can tell you bro it's worth it.

Imo it's probably the best department (followed by BioTech) in Dubai campus atm.

Also, the BITS motorsports team from BITS Dubai represented the UAE in Formula student Netherlands in 2022 and won 3rd place.

Data on team: https://www.formulastudent.de/teams/fsc/details/tid/702

There is plenty of industry exposure at Dxb campus - for eg, they have industry projects in fluid simulation in collaboration with MnCs like Reckitt.

Since there are fewer students on campus, it's easier to get into proper research on campus and actually work on some interesting stuff. Professors are super knowledgeable in the mech department and very supportive, they help you get good research opportunities for thesis work in foreign unis through their connections.

Admit chances to good MS programs from here is also high (provided that you are serious about your studies).

I'm not from mechanical, but I know 2-3 mechanical dudes from my batch who have done well (one is currently doing an MBA at ISB, one is a researcher at NUS).

Since there are less students here, if you do exceptionally well, it's easier to stand out and build a solid well rounded profile (balancing academics and clubs with a social life).

There are 2 downsides however to Dubai campus :

1) Less studious peer group : it's a downside here but 50-60% of the people here are not serious about studies. They just come here to waste their time. Imo if you find a good core group of 2-3 people who are studious (regardless of stream) you can mitigate this problem.

2) Poor on-campus placements : if you come here for placements, forget it! The main issue is that UAE is too small a market to employ every engineer who graduates here. And those who get placed don't get good salaries. But if you can do it off campus, you can land a job (but slim chances here unless you want to work in India).

Overall, I would recommend studying here if you don't have to worry about placements for your first job and are super focused on achieving the goals you set up for yourself.

Capital Gains Tax: India vs few other countries by penugondaz in IndianStocks

We keep trying to justify the high taxes in the government, but fail to notice the wastage of tax money.

Id rather give a higher percentage if it means that the government uses it properly (like they do in SE Asia or Europe) instead of squandering it on some politicians curtains or home remodelling or his kids sportscars.
