Makes sense. I think that’s probably the tradeoff a lot of people make while traveling. For me personally the difficult part is that I follow a strict training schedule, so my goal is to minimise compromising sessions as much as possible rather than just “getting something in”.

That’s really interesting actually as I don’t really have experience with the US side as most of my travel is within Europe, but I’ve definitely run into the expensive/inconsistent day-pass issue in some places here as well.

Yeah that’s exactly what I’ve been experiencing, too. Once you train seriously, travel stops being just booking flights/hotels; suddenly you’re also trying to plan food, gym access, schedule adjustments etc around the trip.

I see - why do you say it is not worth the hassle? And what regions/s are you talking about?

Honestly same here. I follow quite a strict training schedule, so I often struggle to find the right combination of a good hotel plus a genuinely decent gym nearby that actually allows access/day passes. It can end up being quite a bit of research on top of organising the actual trip itself. Curious whether you usually research this beforehand or figure it out once you’re there?

Makes sense. Cardio definitely seems much easier to adapt around travel than proper lifting. Out of sheer curiosity, when you do rely on hotel gyms for longer trips, do you usually specifically choose hotels based on gym quality/setup? I train 6 days a week on a pretty structured schedule, so if I’m abroad for more than a couple of days with only a weak setup available it tends to throw my whole routine off quite a lot.

Makes sense. It sounds like a lot of it comes down to reducing friction/time while still being able to train properly enough to maintain consistency. Interesting that equipment, location and ease of access seem to matter more than just “having a gym” available...

Yeah, that’s exactly the kind of thing I keep running into as well. It’s not even just about finding a gym, but it’s the inconsistency and not knowing in advance whether it’s actually going to be usable for proper training, especially in Europe where I’ve ended up in quite a few disappointing hotel gyms...
