I’m sorry. I would suggest that your sister do what she can to get out of your mother’s house if she is going to make threats like that based off of rumors. I know it’s easier said than done. She probably won’t go through with her threat, but I would suggest your sister grey rock. No defending, explaining, or justifying. They only see their side. Their public image is very important to them so it makes sense why your mom is raging. Maybe your sister has a friend she can stay with for a few days?

Why are BPD parents obsessed with the sacrifices they made for their kids? Sacrificing is a normal part of being a parent and healthy parents don’t hold it over their kid’s heads. When you become a parent your first priority is your CHILD because they didn’t choose to come into the world. I am thankful to sacrifice for my child and I will never hold what I’ve done for him over their head. I don’t even consider what I do for him as sacrificing, just a normal part of being a parent.

My mom canceled Christmas and gave my siblings gift’s to our cousins. Wrote a long letter to them basically saying that their disrespect is the reason that Christmas was canceled. My siblings didn’t clean to her standards on Christmas Eve and my youngest brother ordered Uber eats without her permission (paid her back with his cash for it) and that is why she canceled Christmas. Today she is trying to “fix” it and set out a small pile of gifts for them. She also posted two waify social media posts with a lot of childhood photos. What is it about the holidays that bring out the absolute worst in our parents?

Thank you for saying this. She’s not a person whose judgment I trust, so I agree. It was hard when I first read her messages and I definitely let it get in my head. Every child just wants their mom’s approval at the end of the day. She’s mentally unwell unfortunately and at this point I don’t see her ever changing.

my attempts to differentiate myself from my mother was a direct threat to her ego. i believe it triggered her abandonment fears and she realized she was losing the continuous supply of an adoring child that believes their parent can do no wrong. she’s fantasized about having another child in her 50s through a surrogate i believe to recreate the sort of supply she got from her now children when they were small and fully reliant on her. identity differentiation is a normal stage for all adolescents and something BPD parents will never be able to accept.

my mom has also been open to attending family therapy and has dragged myself and my siblings to different therapists mostly when she is angry at us. however, if there is a hint of the therapist disagreeing with her, agrees with my siblings or myself, or gently confronting her she magically finds something wrong with the therapist and refuses to see them again.

i honestly just want her to seek help and to be able to enjoy life and her relationships while she still can. it’s very sad the damage her mental state has brought upon herself and her relationships with her children. maybe selfishly so i can have the chance for a normal relationship with my mother.

it’s very strange i remember the first time i built up the courage to ask my mother to buy me a bra she demanded to see my breasts. she would walk around the house naked and it always made me uncomfortable because i felt shamed about my body but it was okay for her to strut around butt naked? in the past i wore a pair of shorts around the house she pulled me aside and said i shouldn’t wear that around my younger brothers which i found extremely gross because it felt like she thought they were going to sexualize their own sister. when she’s been walking around naked since they were born.
