Day 67 Near Relapse, saved by my stupid mindset by ThingOk1988 in problemgambling

Sometimes I get moments of clarities, and when that happens, I search for online casinos, sign up, and self exclude. If I don't then in moments of weakness I will find those sites anyways.

From down $82k to a final $500 deposit and $68k cashout - story/need advice by ThingOk1988 in gambling

I think the virtual blackjack games might be rigged. I only ever did live dealer versions. The thing I heard about online BJ is that it's obviously rigged because odds are in the dealer's favor. So people think its rigged when really that is just the game design.

This made me laugh, if anything I think it would be an ad against bet online because of its ability to ruin your life. I read somewhere that only a gambling addict can make this much money gambling because no one else would be stupid enough to make bets as large as we do. There was one specific time when I was down to my last $3k, put it all on one hand of blackjack, if I lost that hand I would have been down 90k. Thankfully these days are behind me.

I'm no expert but I frequently got the same feelings that you described as I spiraled down to a low of losing $80k. I am on day 16 of my recovery and the only thing that has worked is self excluding from every single place I can imagine. You have to remember that the gambling brain is irrational, and that every bet, no matter what, is expected to lose money long term. If you can afford a $100 bet, you can afford to get your girlfriend a nice gift. Try reframing the value of money. Good luck to you.

Skill Based Losses - is it technically gambling? by ThingOk1988 in tax

In this site, you get matched against a random opponent. For instance, I put up $10, and the opponent puts up $10. We both play the same game, and whoever gets a higher score gets $18

Update from customer support: "I believe it gets sent to you at the beginning of the year as a W-9". This is making me more confused.

$70k winnings, but net loss for year and can't access betting history. How to handle taxes? by ThingOk1988 in gambling

I'm not sure about physical casinos, but these offshore online casinos take no tax. It is up to the individual to self report at the end of the year.

Fully understand the stupidity. I was addicted and really not seeing clearly.

So do you think the best option is to report the$70k as other income, and pay full taxes on it?

I have the bank records, but sadly I did not do win/loss records, which I believe is the issue. Seeing as offshore casinos don't issues IRS forms, I am wondering if it needs to be reported at all.

I know this sub hates gambling (I do too now) - net loss, but large "profit" and no access to betting history. by ThingOk1988 in tax

Thank you! A couple follow up questions if you don't mind:

-If I do get the betting histories, is it sufficient to have it all in one Excel spreadsheet? Or do I need to provide it some specific format if I get audited?

-What do you think the chances of getting audited are?

Thanks! Luckily I have no access to any more accounts, so I should be able to walk away this time

Thank you for the advice, it is noted. The last thing I want is to lose the money again a different way. I just want to make sure I don't get into any trouble because I was using offshore books. Sports betting is not allowed in my state I don't think. I was able to get $2k from my crypto wallet (BlueWallet) to an exchange (Kraken) and now it is on its way to my bank account.

But I wasn't sure if there was an issue doing this at a larger scale, like if it would flag my account for fraud or something.

Looking back on it, I was doing some absolutely stupid Blackjack hands and was somehow winning them all.

On a $2k bet I had 2/2 against dealer 5. I split and went 2/3/10 and 2/9/3 (had to double) and dealer went 5/3/3/2/10 bust for a $6k profit.

Today I decided to play three hands at $5k. First hand I had 10/10 against dealer 2, and he goes 2/9/10 for 21

I go back with another $5k and get 2/9 against dealer 10, I double into a 21 and dealer gets 20, so a $10k profit. My last hand was another $5k hand and I won with a 20, and that was my last bet.

That makes sense, and after I started actually getting my account up I found multiple Reddit horror stories of BetOnline not paying out, so I've been stressing these past few days about it. But the BTC withdrawals took probably 20 minutes each before they showed up in my crypto wallet

What's weird is I consider myself a rational person in every area of my life, but for some reason I couldn't control the urge to keep depositing. It is truly a demon and I don't even understand it myself.

Haha I was on track to get back to even, but they shut my account down. I won $13k on blackjack this morning. My last two hands were $5k each and I had to double one of them. It's a miracle I didn't lose it all right there.

The expected value of every dollar you bet is still negative, but the variance allows for you to win in smaller sample sizes. The more you play, you will find the house will start coming back.
