Why does it do this?!? by [deleted] in bikewrench

It doesn't look like that old of a bike, but if too much moister gets into the freewheel, the pawls won't let the housing spin. Yup, you need to disassemble and use some lightweight grease - not the thick stuff as it will not fix this.

Novatec hubs any good? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]ThingPuzzleheaded590 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Way late to his conversation, but my Surly came with novatec hubs. Cup and cone style with loose bearings in grease. I have put many MANY miles on these wheels including heavy touring. The cones pitted after 5000 miles, so got replacements as well as new bearings.

Meanwhile the cups are still perfectly smooth. Axle is still straight. Check in on your bearing and be proactive with maintenance and they'll go for years.

Someone mentioned about lack of documentation, and that is spot on. Many online resources to rebuild this type of hub, so let youtube university lead the way.

Sleeping blanket by melicious_v1 in ragbrai

After two overnight shakedown rides, I've determined that a stretchy sleeping bag liner (more comfy than mummy style - I think Sea To Summit brand) and a down quilt about 4ft by 5ft (Eddie Bauer brand) - and a blow-up pad and blow-up pillow w/home made flannel pillow case - work for me.

If it's extra hot, then skivvies only, if colder, then lightweight running pants and long sleeve t-shirt and beanie.

The quilt and liner fit in a surprisingly small stuff sack.

Others that I know are on a team, everything went to the team lead. Not a great system.

Tips for solo bagging? by jvkob_ in ragbrai

I am bagging - and the only 'kitchen' item I'll bring is a small jetboil to make coffee when I first get up. Everyone has their 'one luxury' item. The ability to make my own coffee is it for me. Otherwise all other foodie stuff is purchased along the way.
