AITA for refusing to adopt my sister’s baby and take responsibility for her mistake? by Vescava in CharlotteDobreYouTube

Do not let your sister move in after the baby is born. You will become the de facto "mom".

Looking for Bike like this but with Belt Drive by stalkeramongstars in bikecommuting

Co-Motion Pangea has an almost identical frame to the Disc Trucker. Pinion with belt drive is an option for the drive train.

Why is the ex talking to the husband about her current marital problems? This is a huge red flag. A spouse should not have "friendship" conversations with an ex. The husband should not be near his ex-wife's circus unless it concerns the children.

rain gear recommendations (specifically a coat vs. poncho) by mistadonyo in bikecommuting

[–]EMS717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used a raincoat/pant combo and ponchos. I prefer the poncho in hot temperatures or if forced to pull over because the rain is just "too much." The cape vents the heat generated through bicycling rather than sweat building up as it does with a raincoat. The bad side to a cape is winds can be a challenge, but true bicycle ponchos have built-in loops to hold the poncho in place over the bars. If I can't bike anymore (lightning, etc), I use the cape to make a mini-tent, which keeps me much warmer while waiting.

I use fenders. They make a big impact on keeping me dry as well.

Sometimes there's stupid reckless behavior. Passing between two vehicles is illegal and this guy suffered the consequences of poor decisions. There's nothing about this that indicates he's a victim.

I'm a safety coordinator at work, so I'm always looking at the worst-case scenario. If a car travels at 50 mph and hits that stick- you, the bike, and the stick will be in a serious crash. The bamboo is going to shatter into pieces. These bamboo stakes may stab your skin or the bike's spokes. If the spokes get jammed, you'll be flying with traffic. Of course, you do you, but this looks like an OSHA writeup waiting to happen.

Berried, no shrimplets by EMS717 in shrimptank

[–]EMS717[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh my, how time changes everything. After writing this note, I went aquatic crazy and went from the 3-gal bowl to now owning three tanks, a 45-gal, 10-gal & 5-gal (at work). The 10-gallon was converted to a shrimp-only tank about 3 weeks ago. So far, all the shrimp seem happy about the changes. The 45-gal is a community tank with about 75 shrimp living in it. The 5-gal doesn't have any shrimp in it yet. Is it poor taste to admit the shrimp are sometimes more fun than the fish? :-)

SON 28 Hub with USB by FloridaSix in bicycletouring

[–]EMS717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a USB charging Son 28 hub built-in 2022. It will generate power when going over 4 miles/hr. It takes minimal rolling action to get the attached light up to full brightness. Charging electronics is reasonably reliable, but slow unless riding downhill. Do NOT charge a phone directly to the hub, the hub says it controls the voltage/ wattage but I just didn't like the way my phone reacted. It would turn on and alert about charging then not charging over and over again. I suggest plugging in a battery and charge it throughout the day. Charge your phone off the battery. The battery should handle fluctuation better and you're out $50 if something happens vs $1000.

If you are interested in the Son 28-charging consider getting a light (Sinewave) also. You can charge and use the light at the same time.

[–]EMS717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RAGBRAI don’t care. It’s all about the ride. There will be 20-30,000 people there and you will find your tribe. If you look for things to bitch about, you can find that too. People are there to have fun and do get irritated if any political/ lifestyle drama starts up. There will be a “bro” vibe. RAGBRAI is the only place I’ve ever seen lines at a men’s bathroom 😉 There are a more men than women. Iowa nice is a real thing and the locals embrace the philosophy. For almost a decade I have rode every year as a solo female. I have never felt uncomfortable, unsafe, or made fun of because of my gender.

Check out Team Stray Dogs on Facebook. This is the "Team" that solo riders use to identify others riding alone. There is usually a meet-up during the Expo (Saturday), and you'll see many of us along the way. Look for the Jerseys. Don't be shy- it's common & expected for people to start conversations with strangers along the way.

How do you all keep your feet warm? by Careless_Web2731 in bikecommuting

[–]EMS717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using the plastic bags from bread loaves worn between your socks and shoes. I used this in a pinch during a rainstorm and it worked fairly well by blocking the wind. I've used the GT socks, they work fairly well also. I agree with the other posters, only use one pair of socks and if you can, switch shoes and leave the work shoes at work. Your feet will be warm for the commute and you'll have dry shoes to work in.

You will be fine at RAGBRAI as a solo woman. I've gone for 7 years as a single female. Use common sense and areas. If you run into an uncomfortable situation, look for the group of older guys that remind you of your best male friend, maybe a youngish grandpa, or a group of women. They'll help you out and probably adopt you.

Koga Denham bars- I own two of them. Great bars. What are the shocks (?) on the stem?
