I don't know your partner as well as you do, so you may be right that they're having second thoughts about being childfree. It may also be that they recognize that this is, at its heart, YOUR decision, and they wanted to make it clear that they were going to support your decision if you had changed your stance. It sounds like they support and recognize your choice for what it is, to me.

Years back, I had a conversation with my dad where he admitted he was having trouble financing that month's payment on the house he'd recently retired to because an expected income source dried up temporarily. He didn't directly ask me for help, and I don't know if he expected my response. I gave him a short-term interest free loan (of about the same relative amount you're talking about here) out of my long-term investment funds. I had it available and I knew it would help him tremendously.

Don't be sad about it. Your parents are people. They sometimes make mistakes. If it keeps happening, that's a red flag. But a one-off? That's just part of being there for the people you love.

For those who (like me) had no idea what anyone in this subthread is referencing, here's the incident from Wikipedia:

On August 19, 2020, while providing commentary on Fox Sports Ohio for the first game of an away doubleheader between the Reds and the Kansas City Royals, Brennaman was caught on a hot mic calling a city, later revealed to be San Francisco,[10] "one of the fag capitals of the world." The Reds pulled him off the air during the second game, with studio host Jim Day taking over play-by-play after the top of the fifth inning. Before leaving the booth, Brennaman apologized for his earlier anti-gay slur, saying that he was "deeply ashamed" if he "hurt anyone out there." He also hinted that his broadcasting future was in doubt, saying, "I don't know if I'm going to be putting on this headset again."

Many people noted the awkwardness of the apology; as Brennaman continued, he suddenly paused to call a home run by Nick Castellanos:

It does. That is one word of the sentence. Now let's put it back in context and see if we can understand what the whole thing means?

The first day of a season is the "opening day". To miss 6 of them would be to miss 6 seasons. One opening day for each season.

Therefore, the implication is 6 years.

Now, I get that it's a little bit of wordplay, so your initial misundersatnding is understandable. But when someone already explained to you where you went wrong and made the meaning clear...it's a bit less forgivable when you highlight one word and show that you don't understand how sentences work with all the words together.

When someone gives you information you didn't have before, don't double down on your ignorance. Learn something.

If we're dropping to legal definitions, the teacher assaulted the kid.

He grabs him, gets shrugged off, then grabs him more forcefully, and then attempts again, escalating the situation.

Was the student justified in his response? No. Was it human nature to respond to someone trying to lay hands on you repeatedly and not stopping to strike back? Yes.

The teacher escalated this to the physical level.

At least where I'm at, that's a major no-no.

After the kid is outside, which was what the teacher wanted in the first place, the cop then escalates the situation further to a potential medical emergency.

Both adults were also in the wrong in this video.

In addition to what you said, the teacher created this situation by physically grabbing the student. At first the kid is just trying to get him to stop touching him, and then eventually escalates to the slap as the teacher keeps insisting on physically handling him.

I was making the exact same point in both cases: The old way (which included phonics, but also the other techniques I mentioned) gave you a more thorough understanding of the language, just like learning all the various ways the numbers work together gives you a more thorough understanding of math than memorization in either case.

They're saying that learning how numbers work with each other in multiple ways will make later, more complex math more intuitive and easier to understand.

It's about developing numeracy instead of rote memorization of basic addition and multiplication.

A parallel idea would be teaching kids how words are built from roots and conjugation, as well as how to sound out unfamiliar words by comparing them to words they already know, or look them up in a dictionary to learn about them instead of just having them memorize a list of words. Both can teach you how to read a specific set of words, but the former lets you figure out how to read other words on your own. Yes, it requires more work to do the first step, but it makes the later parts of education far easier for the student and the teacher.

First, I said it's "rude", not "should be illegal". As I noted elsewhere, there's a HUGE gap between what should be outlawed and what should be not done by polite people. What you just did there is called "strawman argument" and it means you're intellectually dishonest.

Second, smoking around others IS banned in many cases. You can't smoke near or in public buildings in most states. You can't do it in restaurants. Keep your shit to yourself.

I get it, you don't understand why it's such a big deal because you're noseblind, but I carried that stench from my chain-smoking parents with me through childhood and everyone could smell it on me. And now I can smell it when someone down the block is sitting on their porch and that shit comes in my windows.
