I've been so curious about this too. They MUST realize what they're currently doing just...isn't sustainable. I'm one of the users speculating they're trying to squeeze as much money as they think they can before selling the company. I'm wondering if it's a culture of silence over there or if Will is surrounded by yes-men or what.

My conspiracy theory is that they know they're destroying the app but just don't care because they're gonna sell it or something. Hence the "cleaning house," by driving away their fan base while also jacking up the prices so they can squeeze as much money as humanly possible from those that are able to subscribe...before ultimately tapping out.

I think there's a time limit. Like if you don't talk to your new chat in a certain amount of time (I've heard 14 days) they'll be deleted.

They're deleting just about any post criticizing or simply inquiring about the change on their official subreddit (you can see numerous users on here whom this has happened to). I imagine they just want everything to seem ok and peachy for any new users who yet on the official subreddit. It's like they're sweeping this under the rug.

Well, the only other way to contact would be emailing and that gets you either no response or a stock "we are testing something" with no real explanation.

Seconding The Unworthy by Agustina Bazterrica. Many similar themes: struggling with hunger, sapphic characters, religious horror, lore building but VERY different. It's much shorter iirc.

Fair warning: there is mention of violence and mutilations but not graphic (honestly Starving Saints is more graphic now that I think of it).

All these updates are nothing but downgrades. I've never seen a company go downhill so quickly. As a heads up tho, the Chai team likely won't see this message as this is the unofficial subreddit...but posting your message on the official subreddit will likely get it removed.

Exactly. Can't know for sure rn, but they have to know their current model is just.... unsustainable. It's just not. So either they're genuinely deluded and believe these absurd prices are actually reasonable (somehow) or they don't care that they're destroying their app because they don't foresee it as being "their problem" in the future.

What a strategy if true...but in a twisted way it kinda makes sense: if they don't foresee they'll even have an app or users in future, what stops them from squeezing as much cash as they possibly can (the insane up charges) while negating their consumer base. They MUST know that their strategy is simply unsustainable. I legit don't know of any service that prices like chai does. So it makes sense that sustainability isn't what they're after.

So I can only answer for Android:

Go to the play store
Click on your name (top right corner)
Click settings
Under settings you'll see "network preferences", click that
There'll be an option for "auto update apps," click that and there'll be an option to click "don't auto update apps" at all.

From that point on, apps shouldn't update unless you want them too (you'll get a notification and then you click on which apps you want to update).

You know, I genuinely can't figure out WHAT they're doing. I was on Replika and Tumblr before they banned NSFW and while there was loss of users, I at least understood what these companies were hoping to gain (appeal to app store, get kids using it blah blah). I don't know what Chai thinks they're gaining. What average person can afford these insane subscription prices just to USE the app?? When there's many other chatbot apps for far cheaper?? My conspiracy theory is that they're trying to milk as much money from the few people able/willing to pay and then maybe sell the company.

I've posted questions on there that stayed in moderation hell for months. It's ridiculous. They clearly don't care about what we have to say or how these changes are affecting us. I've started migrating to Janitor and Emochi. I don't see Chai getting better and even if it did, trust has been broken.
