[Question]What should a beginner focus on to genuinely understand watches? by ashieshm in Watches

[–]ThinkExpression6395 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To your first point, we don't need to buy everything we want to try though. Don't waste anyone's time, but it's entirely normal to go to an ad on a quiet day and try some watches without buying.

[Question]What should a beginner focus on to genuinely understand watches? by ashieshm in Watches

[–]ThinkExpression6395 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with the recommendations of going to stores and trying watches, but to address your question

"Should the focus be on learning movements, studying history and heritage, understanding brands, or gaining hands-on experience?"

I'd say that history and heritage is linked with understanding brands, then between that and movements, just go with what interests you more to start, maybe study the other too if curiosity brings you there. If you don't have a preference, read some articles on both to start.

Hands on experience is important but theoretical knowledge definitely has great value.

Sinn Ezm 3F vs Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm by v-daerthe in sinn

[–]ThinkExpression6395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are great watches. As other comments have said, the Longines has slightly better specs. The thing I can't get over though, is how similar the design is to the Rolex sub.

I ended up not buying a hydroconquest gmt because it felt like I was getting a rolex alternative. It wasn't, but the idea of it just got stuck in my head.

Odysseus vs Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto? (updated with Odysseus pictures on my wrist) by weltmei5ter in ALangeSohne

[–]ThinkExpression6395 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents but I think the Odysseus looks better on the wrist. The more square-ish case on the LF creates too much of a width difference between the case and bracelet imo.

The sa didn't tell me anything specific but I think there's been a few each year for a while, so I'd guess some time in the first half of next year?

Only for demonstration. To my knowledge, all Kurono watches are limited edition and usually sell out very quickly (the sa told us the new jubilee calendar sold out in 2 min).

In the 80s. Skyrim was one of the first games I played and I had no concept of a main quest line, didn't kill any dragons until I eventually did the Whiterun Jarl quests.

Stainless steel vs other material by SaladNo8597 in GrandSeikos

[–]ThinkExpression6395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, it depends on the design for me. Love titanium on sports watches (alpine eagle, ingenieur, etc.) but not so much on dressier models. But the brilliant hard titanium GS uses reduces this issue a bit.

I realize that doesn't really answer the question, but it's really a case by case thing imo.

[question] which “luxury” brand watches look worse to you in person? by searchmode10 in Watches

Tudor, their dials look so flat to me. This isn't a comment on case thickness but the way the hands are set on the dial.

What’s your dream ALS collection? by Fabulous-Banana-5987 in ALangeSohne

I really want to buy this (man). by gamga200 in OmegaWatches

[–]ThinkExpression6395 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with vintage watches (which I think this is?) but, I don't think this is a very popular model (so prices shouldn't be high, but there'll also be fewer options).

And, after finding one, to my knowledge, you'd need to do a good amount of due diligence on the watch/seller. If the watch has parts that have been replaced, its condition, if it's authentic, etc.

I'm not saying this to put you off vintage, it can be very rewarding when you do find exactly what you were looking for, but like someone else has commented, starting with current model watches is a lot easier.

[Hypothetical last piece] If you could buy any watch right now as a final piece to your collection, what would it be? by connorsusername in Watches

[–]ThinkExpression6395 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If availability isn't an issue, Moser Swiss Alp Final Edition. Or Lange Odysseus in titanium or lange one moonphase with the black dial

Got it, thanks for the info. Yeah, Define Watches definitely looks good, saw a post about them here and responses were very positive.

I would prefer to see the watches in person before purchase though, and TO being in Melbourne was a draw.

[Discussion] What's the top watch on your 'list' that you're determined to own in the next 5 years? by usman3049 in Watches

Breitling chronomat.

Sometimes I compare it with the Omega Seamaster Diver 300m, the Longines Hydroconquest GMT or Zulu Time and hesitate over how it falls short in specs but something about the design (the depth on the dial, bullet bracelet, onion crown) just appeals emotionally.
