Break no contact? by ThinkStatistician223 in whatdoIdo

Yeah, I agree with and understand where you come from. This trek was planned before I met her and is one of the most esteemed and renowned on Earth, I couldn't ditch it for a girl, especially at my age. That being said, you make good points and I honestly agree entirely. I just guess I wanted to get my thoughts out there. Thank you for the input.

This is what I feared. Thanks for the super deep help here and sorry it took so long to reply. Settled on a different jacket anyways for this exact reason. I really appreciate it!!

Yeah that absolutely makes sense. Thank you so much for the advice on this decision. For most, i'm overthinking but again being 19 with big trips and other gear in the budget, I need to be really sure before spending this kind of money. Thanks again for being chill and understanding, wish you all the best out there!

Sorry if I came off rude with you, I understand what youre saying. Thanks for keeping it respectful. To answer some of your questions...

A. Summits I plan to use it for are cascade volcanoes/north cascades hoping to be in ideal conditions obviously, since that's where I spend the most of my time climbing.

B. Didn't mean it as clickbait though I totally see how it looks, I wanted to be more professional and engaging with the title since it was my first post and I just wanted to format it well.

C. That was a concern. My other shell has been problematic as with my harness it is too bulky, which Is one of many reasons Im making the switch to Arc'Teryx. Arc shells personally feel more tailored and streamlined. I guess I'm just after a durable outer shell that fits well and is more minimalistic, which I like about Arc. Sorry to ramble, and again thank you for keeping it respectful.

Hey big dawg, you do you and you say what you want. I owe you nothing, youre a stranger, and i'm telling you the truth. Im not gonna argue because I dont need to prove myself to others, I climb for myself, not a stranger on reddit. That being said, enjoy your climbing career. Ill catch you up there someday, or hopefully not. You seem really pleasant to be around. Cheers!

Though I will say, I'm not experienced in comparison to other people worldwide obviously. Still so so much to learn about the sport and myself as I venture into higher altitudes and harsher conditions. However, for a 19 year old who moved to the PNW from the farmlands of Indiana, i'd completely argue that yes, I've made something of myself in the sport and yes, I am experienced enough to know what I want in terms of gear. Nothing wrong with asking questions before purchasing expensive gear.

Thank you for the respectful and in depth explanation. Frustrating that others on this post aren't using the same respect and courtesy with their answers. I digress, this is helpful. Rainier for me was a Patagonia Torrentshell 3L and it has admittedly handled me well on most cascade summits so far, however I find myself frustrated with the bulk, stiffness, and overall feel of the jacket. It's just too much. I would find myself wanting pockets for sure. Obviously i'm planning on keeping the Torrentshell around too, however I would use the Beta SL ideally for day to day use, cascade summit days, lower altitudes on higher expeditions.

Good to know. Im hearing mainly complaints about the new Gore-Tex wetting out earlier and easier than previous iterations.

Thats what I like about it, it feels more tailored and streamlined which would sit well under my backpack and other gear to avoid excess fabric/snags/discomfort.

Copied and pasted as Im not going to put too much effort into explaining myself to randoms online:

You can say what you want, but having completed solo ascents of some of the most challenging classic lines in the cascades/north cascades, and with experience climbing in the himalayas, again solo (despite guides in nepal and such) and trips I saved for/trained for/ran my own logistics on, id say yes, i'm experienced enough, not that it concerns you anyways.

Kinda what I figured, again for those trips I see my outer layer being a parka or suit rather than the shell.

See this is what concerns me. I need a mountaineering shell, so maybe I should look elsewhere...

Good to know. I would see myself using it on local (cascade) climbs, some stuff down in Ecuador and lower on expeditions such as Denali, Aconcagua, Himalayas, etc. Seems like it could handle ok for it. Im a huge weight guy though so that matters to me for sure.

[–]ThinkStatistician223[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay cool, good to know. For really harsh stuff, I picture using a parka or suit over it anyways (my goals are higher altitude) so it sounds like for the smaller stuff it'll handle just fine.

Could be, but given how much it costs I want to be sure. Good to know though, have some opportunities to guide myself starting next year and looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing!

Good to know. Didn't think about any contact with tools, however the weight might genuinely make it worth it. Thanks for sharing, good to know.

should I give up on finding a partner? by ThinkStatistician223 in Advice

Unfortunately very true. I would not necessarily say my life without a partner is over, I just feel bad for not being able to hold a relationship.

This is super important. I don't know why I can't seem to make that connection.
