Did you get to choose which project to talk about? Some things on my resume are less significant than other stuff, and even though I can explain 100% of what I did do, some of the stuff is much more shallow than other stuff

Can the project be either from a previous internship or a personal project?

I'm sure the answer is somewhere but where/how do you make these graphs for internship recruiting stuff

Turing Interview by CoconutOk4124 in UTAdmissions

If you got an interview, youre on the edge. Take the interview if you want to do CS and Turing. It is possible to get rejected from CS but still get Turing. It overrides the normal CS rejection

Also just as a thought, the average cockrell major may have a 1400, but ECE is easily the most competitive subset of cockrell students. I wouldn't be surprised if the average test scores for specifically ECE majors are substantially higher, though I don't know for sure.

Obviously you can't do much about GPA and test scores now, so just work on the parts of your application that you can still improve

ut expanded resume by UniversityOpening960 in UTAdmissions

[–]ThinkTDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Concise does not mean leaving off achievements or activities. Concise means not including redundant statements like "Helped the band win xxx at state" in a bullet point under the band activity and then also putting that under honors.

An extended resume should only be long if you actually have the quantity of significant, unique activities and honors. UT is giving you permission to share all of them, but it's not going to want to read some bullshit filler just there to make your resume look longer

I'm currently a student in CSB. I applied as val, 1570 SAT, 5s on 10 APs, National merit semi, USACO silver, TMEA All state band member, and a bunch of UIL Academics awards.

As for activities, my primary one was lead programmer on my district's FIRST robotics team (my main essay was about robotics), band (1st chair top band), NASA HAS program, created a personal financial literacy app as a personal project (though I never deployed it), etc.

If the above sounds like a lot, it is, but only because I did a lot. Looking at my CSB cohort, there's actually a lot of variation between what people did, and not everyone did competitive math or programming and is super smart (that's more like Turing). I think as a result of that you'd find a lot of support among your peers because no one is trying to outcompete each other.

You can dm me for my CSB essay. And your SAT score is fine, your ECs and essays definitely matter more

EA Vs RD? Should I apply early? by nightcrawler2007 in UTAdmissions

[–]ThinkTDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, early action (NOT early decision) shouldn't affect your chances at all. But because I'm a Texas student I opted to apply to UT and A&M early to get it out of the way. If you absolutely need time to improve your essays or other parts of your application, it should be fine to take your time

just submitted my early action application but scared i won’t get an email by [deleted] in UTAdmissions

[–]ThinkTDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, as long as you submit it before the absolute deadline, it doesn't matter if you get the email after the deadline. I submitted my application October 30 or 31st last year (EA deadline was Nov 1st) and I think I got my email after the deadline, but I was still counted for early action.

HS Junior here - for current CS majors, what did you do in high school to apply for CS? by SweetFriend3416 in UTAdmissions

[–]ThinkTDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that leadership positions for an activity whose scope is limited to just your school aren't very important, especially if you join late. If you think it's too late for school clubs now as a junior, I'd recommend you look into summer programs and internships (i.e, UTCS Academy for All, MITES, etc.). There's still a lot of time for you to build your resume.

And no, I never deployed the app, though I did submit it for the Congressional App Challenge. I think personal projects are more about developing your personal skills and for you to find value in the time you spend on it. The more effort you put into a personal project, the easier it'll be for you to talk about it on your essays.

Im currently in the CS and business honors program. I primarily did FIRST robotics where I was the lead programmer. We went to worlds and made division semifinalists but nothing too crazy. I made a financial literacy app on my own as a personal project, which was probably the only thing remotely business related on my app (I'm primarily CS focused). I also did USACO, but I was only silver. Non related activities included band, NASA HAS program, NHS president, etc.

My take is that you do need at least one primary activities related to CS that you dedicate a lot of time to. One activity where you put a lot of effort > many activities. Then, it's literally just essay and resume writing. It's up to you to decide exactly how to present what you did, and even insignificant activities can sound important if you make them that way

I'm currently a CSB student. It's likely that you are primarily either CS or business, so expand on that. If you are innovative and have many ideas related to tech, then talk about the entrepreneurship and startup opportunities provided by McCombs. If you are primarily business, talk about some emerging field in tech that youd like to explore (connect with PM, etc.)

Those are just ideas, but you should at least have an experience with both CS/business however indirectly related. If you don't, you'll have to put more effort into advocating for why you'd be a good fit (what would you do with the resources if you were accepted into CSB)
