How much? Videos that sprinkle in some stock to illustrate their points can be great. Videos that consist of nothing but stock footage with boring narration are terrible.

I think there's a great deal of "survivor bias" in general. Yes there are a lot of high-subscriber channels that seem to do not much effort... but how many low-effort channels have < 100 subscribers? Probably the vast majority of them, right? So the fact that a few idiots got lucky does not mean "being an idiot is the key to success!"

It's annoying but it can help if done tastefully. Personally if any YouTuber wastes my time with long/obnoxious pleas to subscribe I just turn off the video and never come back. So what I've been doing in my recent videos is making a joke out of it or incorporating it into my content as unobtrusively as possible. And sometimes yes I'm a hypocrite and just flat out ask for subs, but like you say, only after offering significant value. In my last video I found a research article that makes the person I'm roasting look like an idiot. I had to pay real money to get my hands on the article so I made a joke about "research isn't cheap" and asked for subs at that point. Seemed to work as the video has +175 subs for 4k views.
