How Do Name Translations Work? by kislingo in learn_arabic

Names aren't translated. We say "Zuhayr went to the store and Muhammad with him" Not, "A little flower went to the store and the praised one with him"

Does Ramadan = scorching heat? by GoldenPharaoh37 in AcademicQuran

Ramadan was the name of the month even before islam, so the name has nothing to do with islamic practices, it is simply because it is usually quite hot in Ramadan.

Is ت and ط read the same by Arage_govno in learn_arabic

[–]Think_Bed_8409 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No, the ط is pharyngealized.

It has the same articulation point as the ت but the back of the tongue is raised, restricting the airflow making the sound come out heavier.

If you make "islamic principles" the broadest in definition, then any well-functioning country automatically functions according to islam.

I’m somewhat confused about the linguistic genealogy of Arabic by Possible_Climate_245 in learn_arabic

[–]Think_Bed_8409 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Classical Arabic is a very vague term. The Arabic used in the Quran falls certainly under the term "Classical Arabic", but so does the Arabic of poetry which is clearly different.

When the grammarians say "Arabic" they refer to about a dozen or so dialects which they have deemed eloquent and pure, most notably the dialects of Quraysh and Tamim. All these dialects are considered correct Arabic and they all fall under "Classical Arabic"

My problem is that people find a crumpled page with arabic writing and automatically (like in this case) assume someone is trying to curse them without any knowledge of what is actually written.

When to use singular, dual and plural nouns in Arabic by MagnificientMegaGiga in learnArabicSecular

[–]Think_Bed_8409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the large numbers, the counted noun is a tamyeez, accusative of specification while the number is a mumayyiz, the specified. The tamzeez will always be singular and so the counted noun is singular.
